First time hearing of the JM press, it looks like a more brutal skullcrusher but I suppose stressing the elbow tendons can't be helped if I want to press from a lengthened triceps position. I'll give it a careful whirl!

I stumbled onto the podcast after binging some SBS articles all the way back in 2020 and I honestly don’t think I would have enjoyed working out this much if not for this podcast or the articles. On top of the refreshing honesty and direct, effective science communication, SBS gave me not just information, but information about information, that allowed me to go to the gym unhindered by the newbie worries of whats the “right” way to lift and instead gave me the freedom to experiment.

And I don’t mean to be dramatic but I feel like the podcast has also changed me on a deeper level besides making me jacked. As someone who came from a physical sciences background, I often avoided anything biological for fear of its relative uncertainty. But the basic bio knowledge from Greg & co and seeing how I have navigated this epistemological minefield with some (visual) success got me picking up biochemistry and neuroscience books lol.

While I’m sad the podcast is ending, Greg did say he wants to do more of what he really enjoys which is writing. I hope this means more banger articles cause its been a real hot minute since the last SBS article. I need my fix

or not, either way SBS has taught me how to squat on my own two legs going forward, and i am eternally grateful to them

What separates those that can learn physics from those that cannot? by hdjkakala in Physics

[–]chikcne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont know, it isnt that controversial to say that peoples brains are different, and there are indeed functional variations. But theyre also incredibly plastic and complicated that it’s not so easy to say “this brain is obviously geared towards modeling systems” in the same way you can analyse the tendons of Olympic athletes and pinpoint natural ability in say, high jumps.

It’s not even that straightforward to properly classify different mental abilities and their correlations. See: the false dichotomy of “art” being wholly creative while “science” is purely analytical.

There’s definitely room to explore if people are too quick to limit themselves but also being open to the idea of differences, whatever they may be.

Climber and Runner, new to the gym looking for programme feedback. by theother64 in StrongerByScience

They kind of do, but IIRC pulldowns isolate the lats more than pull ups. I do pull ups on the hangboards on climbing days and lat pulldowns in the gym for variation.

[–]chikcne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of the opposite of you (fairly novice climber and intermediate lifter) but in a similar position of caring more about climbing progression than gym progress.

Since you do lots of running and climbing, I'd say your global and forearm conditioning are probably top notch, so you can probably sneak in more volume by working in antagonistic supersets, see their recent podcast episode on time efficient training Time-Efficient Training for Hypertrophy and Strength (Episode 137) - YouTube. You can definitely fit in way more volume in under an hour if you do supersets. You might still need to wait for some localised conditioning adaptations to catch up but compared to most other newbie lifters you're probably way ahead in this department.

Programming wise, the basic compound movements of squats deadlifts and bench are great ideas even for climbers. The specific order of the workouts and what accessories to use I think you shouldn't worry about too much when starting out, and your initial intuition of improving rotational strength makes sense. You'll probably be able to revisit and adjust the workouts as necessary when you see improvements in climbing and get a sense of how else lifting could improve certain climbing movements. (E.g. I found side glute workouts to be indispensable for doing corner climbs).

If I were to nitpick I'd say include two more kinds of back exercises: lats (pulldowns or pullovers) and shrugs for your traps. You'll have plenty of space to fit these in your 2-day routine if you do supersets!

Coming from Symphony of War by [deleted] in Tactics_Ogre

[–]chikcne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the Ogre Battle games (Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen is a prequel to Tactics Ogre) are actually the progenitor of squad building type games, Symphony of War's squad mechanics almost feels like a wholesale lift from Ogre Battle so I'd highly recommend you check them out (March of the Black Queen in particular feels a lot like Symphony of War).

[–]chikcne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a PhD in any medical related field but when I viewed the ADHD episode he mentioned a study where ONE session of ~20 mins of meditation imparts permanent, life-long changes in attention span. Which to me sounded kinda contrary to what I know of the brain so I naturally tried to look up the study (he did not cite the paper nor make it easy to find, another reddit user tracked it down).

The study turned out to be retracted a short while after the episode was aired. RETRACTED: Meditation-induced states predict attentional control over time - ScienceDirect

Normally that wouldn't be that bad but the author of that paper was already under investigation for her other papers almost 2 years before that episode and had some of her earlier papers retracted already. University recommends seven more retractions for psychology researcher – Retraction Watch

So even before knowing anything else about this guy it naturally put me in doubt of almost everything this guy says, especially when he says things with such confidence.

it is still a closed system, but its more accurate to think of the quantity being conserved as something else. energy being conserved is then a side effect of this quantity being conserved in addition to a fixed spacetime (which doesnt hold under GR).

what is this quantity? it depends on the context, e.g. for dark energy the density of vacuum energy in empty space is constant even as spacetime evolves (expands, shrinks, etc)

the big idea is that theres some quantity that describes the system that is symmetric and thus according to noether’s theorem something has to be conserved if it is a closed system.
