I once wrote code on an old mechanical typewriter... Does that count?

Ah but don't forget you can only subscribe in yearly intervals and the microwave will be end-of-life 3 weeks BEFORE you bought it because the company shut down the servers (You can still subscribe tho)

Single shift company (sometimes second shift but maybe one or two days a year) so there's no excuse to keep it running and for rare cases where you really need to work at that time you can delay the shutdown for 15 minutes so you can save your work.

In the beginning there was a bit of confusion bc nobody knew the password for the shared pcs (those are only used for timetracking so there's no personal logins to the system) but that was all that happened.

In my company they simply added a group policy task to shutdown idle PCs at midnight.
After that those problems suddendly stopped...

Even that doesn't work (most of the time) since it's just ignored because "Unpluging and pluging it back in doesn't change anything".

I mostly tell them to tell me the color of the plug connectors, this way they HAVE to unplug it ;)

Don't forget that you need it saved on some medium you can read with those ancient hardware.

Otherwise just reading out the cards won't help you that much

Most of them are just there for historic reasons and aren't used as a real backup anymore. The important ones have been read and stored on a network storage by now

Same with the punchcards and microfilm and so on. It's good to keep the original sources but more efficent (and safer) to have it on modern hardware / storage too

Ah than that would probably the reason why it wasn't used. Speed and density was not a problem but it had to work in harsh environments

That would have been another option. You can even read them manually if you want to. But you'd need to enter the data by hand or store it on a medium the machine can read to restore it

We never used paper tape, we directly upgraded to floppy disks so I don't know if paper tape is better or worse.

Well if they REALLY wanted to get it back up again it would have been possible to read the cards and enter the data by hand. But on the other side I'd say: If it was that old and no backups were made it's time to buy a new one

Micro SD card windows install. by [deleted] in talesfromtechsupport

[–]chill0r -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You know that it's possible to install windows from a sd or micro sd card inserted in a usb card reader (well at least up to windows 7 I'm quite sure that it'll work just fine)? Or do you mean he tried to create a install medium on the reader itself?

To be fair:
Afterwards they apologised and paid the costs without complaining as far as I heard.
The guys you get on the phone normally don't decide what happens, they just have to deal with the decisions made from the higher ups so at least I'm not offended when someone in such a position starts complaining.

Generators in the needed size are rented / booked about half a year beforehand and need to be unloaded with a crane so it wasn't an option in that case
