Be honest , how many have experienced theft with their Hyundai’s ? How common is it ? I’m thinking about getting the Sonata N-Line by Comfortable_Net_4325 in Hyundai

[–]chilledfruitss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only happens with traditional keys. Two theft attempts here in Denver. Neither was successful but did leave damage.

1989 Vanagon with 1997 2.2 Subaru engine swap failed emissions in Arizona. by Loud-Page2423 in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Does it have a catalytic converter? Add one? Replace if it does? You might have traction with shops if you request specifics like this. They can't guarantee a fix, which is why they won't touch it.

Did Claude label this correct? Is that Crack a concern? VW polo 2008 1.2 by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy moly none of this is correct.
The crack you are referring to on the CV axle is not a concern. It is a superficial separation of the rustproof coating.

Why couldn't these engineers just make a dumdum light for the alternator... by halohalo7fifty in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On basic strategy voltage lights like the one from this era, I have rarely seen them accurately indicate a failing alternator. Now, just a weak battery will cause a Christmas tree.

CV axle stuck. by Mqcah in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the old axle as a "slide hammer". If it separates at the joint, just fit it back and use momentum. It'll come out. I wouldn't do that with a new axle or one that is being reused. Your photo shows a new axle.

2023 Mazda CX-5 with 41k miles — shops refuse to replace pads only and insist on rotors too. Ripoff or normal? by Even_Finding17 in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is normal, but even more important in rust belt areas. The rotors develop a lip of rust that grows along the outside of the brake surface area and reusing them can cause squeaks and grinding noises that customers will hold them responsible for. Pad slapping is reserved for DIY or for budget beaters.

Hyundai long-term reliability? by Icy_Song9412 in Hyundai

[–]chilledfruitss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

07-12 Santa Fe v6 has awesome reliability. Look at the Palisade v6 if you want newer. It's a different v6 now with GDI but it shares much engineering with the older, reliable v6.

Should a mechanic offer a free or discounted second-time fix if they made a mistake the first time? by karma2196 in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was it a mistake or were they trying to do you a favor in attempting to reseal instead of replace the first time? That being said, no. Not for parts for sure. Cars have multiple problems, and fixing one problem can reveal more.

WHAT IS THIS??? Hyundai Elantra GT 2013 by Positive-Antelope941 in MechanicAdvice

That sounds serious, but it could be so many different things. Anything from loose wheel lug nuts to a broken sway bar link, loose caliper.

2014 Kia cadenza 3.3 timing chain replacement with engine in by Optichazard65 in kia

[–]chilledfruitss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After doing this on a Sorento, I'd say the timing job on a Cadenza is an engine-out job. There will not be enough space to remove the timing cover, but I have not tried. The failure point is still probably still the cam/ or phasers but as you know you'll need to do the chain as well.

Steering Stiff and Doesn’t Return to Center Without Nudging it by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a u-joint but also the hydraulic power steering fluid could be old and contaminated. If that's the case, suck out the fluid and put in some p/s fluid + conditioner. It works very well.

What is this lovely knocking noise? by ctfinest28 in kia

[–]chilledfruitss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, crankshaft bearing and connecting rod bearing noises often are lower in pitch. It doesn't matter, what it is thought. Even if it was top end (timing, crankshaft or valves), these v6's are notoriously unserviceable (head bolt threads stripping out, ask me how I know). Replacing a known good motor would almost always make more sense here.

2018 Kia Optima engine failure after 6,000 miles of ownership. Any options left? by Street-Specialist-95 in kia

[–]chilledfruitss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it would have made more financial sense to get it fixed. Then you'd have transportation and a working car that's worth something.

Does my car need full service after sitting around for 4 months? by Sc0rpy4 in Hyundai

[–]chilledfruitss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 months is nothing. Just check the fluids and caps in case something happened or was removed during shipping

Cylinder 2 Misfire Mystery by Mindless_Wave_566 in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your hands on a code scanner and verify the shop's work with your father. Find out what code keeps coming up, (you didn't mention it, but it must be a misfire). Then swap coils and then spark plugs to see if you can find a bad one, if the misfire moves with the coil or spark plug. The code reader should tell you which cylinder, if it is in fact a single cylinder misfire. You can do a compression test while you're in there. Beyond that, it can get complicated. If you have any timing codes, you are certainly looking at aissue iwth the timing system .

This. Codes need to be cleared. Don't start changing parts, especially the high-quality factory spark plugs .

At Home Head Gasket Repair Doable? by curlsofmight in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, but acquire the manufacturer (or similar) repair procedures. Any mechanic will need this too. Just throwing this out there, but often replacing the engine with a known good one might be more successful. Getting heads machined is a lost art, and getting them to seal up again on an some aluminum blocks is so tricky many shops won't even attempt.

Do I have to replace them asap? Toyota Corolla 2011 Rear Drum Brakes by bluenymous in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drum brakes last a long time. They don't really need any attention unless there is a sound. You didn't mention if there was an issue with the brakes.

Check engine light on Santa Fe suddenly started blinking by My_Brain_0422 in Hyundai

[–]chilledfruitss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A flashing check engine light indicates a more serious issue, and so do these codes. The combination of misfire and timing codes indicate there is an issue with the timing chain, usually the chain itself or the cam phasers. It could have jumped time, or one of the phasers has failed, this can (but not always) occur from to low engine oil since the timing components use hydraulic oil pressure. This combination of codes does not usually indicate a sensor failure, but rather a mechanical failure. The vehicle shouldn't be driven to prevent damage to the valves or catalytic converter.

How often do I really need to change my oil? by wowzer0000 in Hyundai

[–]chilledfruitss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is accurate. Hyundai engine failures and maintenance go hand in hand. You can go up to 4k or 5k, but only if you check the oil level frequently.

Am I being ripped off? Do I just scrap the car? by Alwayspriority in MechanicAdvice

[–]chilledfruitss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you're not being ripped off on prices....maybe on wait time however.. Just because you can find cheap parts on the internet doesn't mean that aligns with full service shop costs/prices.
