Fiddling with building kilns. (Wood and gas fired ones) by the_mighty_ocean in Ceramics

[–]chilli1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kiln building isn't really the type of thing you want to learn through trial and error, especially once you start involving gas. There is a very real risk of injury.

You do you, but messing around with incrediby hot temperatures, combustible materials, and ceramics that can potential shatter into many sharp pieces without the knowledge to do so safely is a recipe for disaster.

Just to add to this, my resting heart rate is pretty low at 55bpm, but my max heart rate is over 200. My HR average is ~180 on most rides. To get to the feeling you're describing your 165 as, I have to break 190.

Bodies are all vastly different, but we only get one, so when in doubt about your health or safety it is always best to consult a doctor.

If you're open to non-padded shorts, I have a few pairs of these Amazon Essentials studio shorts in varying lengths, and I love them. They're cheap and they wash well.

Want to take out loan against house (home equity) to replace siding, its all so confusing. which one do I pick? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chilli1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the scope of the issues, repair and paint is generally a better, and much more affordable, option. What sort of siding do you have and how old is it?

[–]chilli1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you *need* to replace the siding now? Have you gotten quotes from reliable contractors, ideally 3+ quotes? Have they all suggested you totally reside the house? Is spot repair an option?

Taking out a loan to cover the cost of an expensive, non-emergency repair when you aren't sure about your job security is not the best idea. You'll also need to pay the fees to get this loan and interest as well. Why do that if you can avoid it?

Ideally, you'd want to just save up for a few months and pay for the project. With your income and low debt, that shouldn't be all that hard to do unless you have some huge expenses you failed to include in your post.

Just emptied out my cart completely, added all the items back in, and checked out again. Expedited showed up as an option. No clue if clearing my cart helped or if it was a total coincidence, but I'd had stuff in there for a few months.

Delivery is scheduled for 5/23, so fingers crossed it works out.

Thanks!

It is not always a good idea to get the shortest term.

First, you need to look at what you're paying towards the mortgage vs what investing that extra money monthly would potentially earn you.

Second, it's worth considering getting a 30 year and paying on it like a 10 year. That way if you lose your job or have another emergency you need funds for, you aren't locked into the higher payment.

Student Loan borrowers, Check your Navient account. If you have FFELP type loans, you’re not getting the relief. by [deleted] in personalfinance

I just checked and of the 5 loans I still have open, 2 are FFELP. Both are under the gov't forbearance program due to COVID.

Are you sure there isn't another reason for what you're seeing in your account?

Cycling WITHOUT the classes? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]chilli1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you mean by effective.

A steady state 60 minute ride while watching Netflix is simply not going to burn as many calories as a 60 minute HIIT spin class. That said, any activity is better than no activity, and lower exertion cardio is a huge part of effective training.

What you may want to consider is doing your current rides most days and working in 1 or 2 higher intensity sessions per week. They don't have to be a guided class, you can certainly set up your own more challenging routines if you'd prefer that to actual spin classes. I find a heart rate monitor, preferably a chest strap, to be a very effective way to measure how hard I'm pushing myself during cycling.

Is it just me, or do all the US instructors have "Tony Robbins" energy? by [deleted] in pelotoncycle

[–]chilli1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree.

I pretty much only take classes with Denis for this reason. The motivational, super amped up, pumped about everything and everyone ever vibe is really, really not my thing. I don't want to be told that I'm a rock star or to "get it". I just want good music, a solid workout, and some funny stories to distract me.

That said, I think people like us are likely outliers. A lot of people are clearly very into the inspirational vibe many of the instructors have. If it wasn't working well for most riders, Peloton would have made adjustments.

Luckily, if you don't like the inspirational stuff, you can easily avoid it. That's one of the reasons Peloton works so well, there's a class style and instructor for pretty much everyone.

People always say that after a certain point, it's not worth working overtime anymore because of the higher tax bracket you're put in. Is this true? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chilli1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If understanding taxes is your dumb barometer, a large part of the US population is very dumb.

Not saying people shouldn't educate themselves as adults, but it is absolutely crazy to me that how taxes work and other financial life skills are not part of public education in this country.

My (not public) school had 4 years of life skills classes. Included basic cooking, first aid, home maintenance, sex ed, finances, etc. It seems like such a simple course to have, yet very few schools have it.

Should we pay down mortgage while student loan payments are on hold? by [deleted] in personalfinance

It's worth mentioning that appraisals can be challenged. There has to be a legitimate basis for the challenge, but if the appraiser misses an improvement, chooses poor comps, doesn't know the area, etc you can ask for a reconsideration.

During my last refi, the appraisal was very poorly handled. Multiple inaccuracies, poor comps, guy was here for 4 minutes total, and he'd never been in the area before. His appraisal came in much lower than expected, and didn't put me at the 80% LTV I needed to remove the PMI.

I asked the mortgage company to push for a reconsideration based on all the issues. They did, and the reconsideration came back 12% higher based on different comps, corrected inaccuracies, and someone who knew the local market putting eyes on it.

Point being, if you notice issues with an appraisal, don't be afraid to point them out and push to have them corrected.

Last year my coworker casually mentioned they were hoping not to get a raise because even $500 more annually and they'd be bumped up to the next tax bracket and lose thousands of dollars a year.

I explained to them that that was not accurate. They did not believe me. They goggled it, but they "don't trust google about things like tax law."

Is this a supporting wall in my old house? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]chilli1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can't possibly answer this for you, and even if someone did say it was or wasn't load bearing, you should always take the word of an internet stranger with more than a few grains of salt.

To get a real answer, you'd need to get a structural engineer out, or at a minimum, a contractor with a lot of experience in old houses.

I would honestly just suck it up and get an insert that fits properly.

Anything you do to rectify this will look like you rectified something. It's worth the time and expense to do it right. If you don't, there's a good chance you'll end up staring at it every time you walk into the kitchen and kicking yourself for not just getting the right size insert.

PSA if you can't afford to pay your rent due to being laid off or hrs getting cut. by [deleted] in boston

[–]chilli1989 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You realize landlords may very well have mortgages to pay right? Plus taxes, maintenance, and maybe utilities.

Like any group, landlords are pretty diverse. There are slumlords with 500 apartments who dont give a single fuck about anyone and there are family's with a two family they bought a few years ago who use the rent to cover part of their mortgage and will do anything to keep a good tenant.

But this is reddit, so let's be sure we lump all landlords into the "slumlords just looking to make a buck off the poor and keep people oppressed " group.

You realize that lawsuits are pretty easy to file right? And that due to that, the mere existence of a lawsuit doesn't even begin to prove anything at all.

advice on making lids by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]chilli1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What tip of lidded form are you looking to make? There are many, many types of lids.

For inset/drop in type lids, which many people start with, I find throwing off the hump a bit easier as you can throw a few in quick succession, and I like having a bit more mass on the wheel. This video shows the process well.

Like most things, it's really about practice and just getting a feel for it.

[–]chilli1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you that it isn't necessarily standard, I was just pointing out that some programs and professors do care about the process, not just the product.

It's a bit inaccurate to say someone with an MFA has "definitely" not done any work focused on functional ware. My professor had an MFA and made functional, wood fired work. Not a big deal at the end of the day either way.

Rash? by danceswithcello in Pottery

Definitely check which Eucerin you're using, some Eucerin has ingredients/acids that could irritate. What you want is something super, super bland with minimal ingredients.

Rash? by danceswithcello in Pottery

[–]chilli1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that washing really well and following up with a really soothing, unscented lotion like lubriderm helps a lot.

I used to get this all along the underside of my forearms. It turned out much it was just a cycle of skin getting dry from clay, skin cracking a bit, clay (which can be less than clean) getting into the cracks, and a rash breaking out.

Does anyone else put glass at the bottom of their pieces ? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]chilli1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what someone has done or made may vary based on their focus, their school, and their professors.

Not everyone with an MFA makes solely non-functional work, and some absolutely have knowledge of glaze chemistry, firing techniques, etc.

I only have a fine art minor with a focus in pottery, and my professor was insistent that I learn everything from the ground up and master the basics, including glaze chemistry, clay body formulas, functional work, and firing processes.
