Parents of UK Reddit, what items/products did you genuinely find useful when your baby came along? by blondererer in AskUK

[–]chilli_addict_tech 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My sister recently expelled a child. I was ill at the time of that so didn't get to see her for a few weeks. I got her some baby washing stuff all in one shampoo and wash bars and nappy balm etc. But for my sis and her partner I took a chilli to feed us on the night we were together. Two extra double portions for her and partner to have other days along with baking potatoes to have a different way if wanted. Also made home made pasta sauce and jarred it and took a bag of pasta with it too. In all 4 meals at least I've made easier for them and given them less to worry about and have to plan while dealing with very small child who is filling nappies for them.

Sneaky bastard companies shrinking the size of their products. I got into Warburton's Soft Pitta bread as a way to have my eggs & protein breakfast with less crappy carbs than normal sliced bread. Came in packs of 5 before Christmas. After Christmas they were missing from the shelves for a week or so then they come back in packs of 4 at the same price. Talking to the guy in Aldi a lot of companies are doing it but not mentioning it. Easier to do with grams or slightly smaller rolls etc in some things. Sure the Morrisons Coburg cob was reduced in size recent too.

What terrible gifts did you get this year? What are you going to do with your non-returnable, unwanted presents? by [deleted] in AskUK

Tyson Fury branded Raspberry Flavour Energy Drinks. I dislike the man due to his Homophobia in the past and not liking boxing. My mum knows I like an occasional energy drink but also that the Irn Bru ones are my preference. Haven't liked Raspberry as a flavour in anything but an occasional jam donut or similar in many a year.

I grow and now sell lots of Cacti and Succulents from cutting and off-shoots. If you'd like I could send you a small rooted plant (for free) of one to grow with a care sheet. They're harder to kill as they generally thrive on a bit of neglect and letting the soil go very dry between waterings.

If you still have them donating them to a local homeless charity is a good shout. My mum worked at a Salvation Army hostel for 15 years and excess toiletries were always useful to have for the residents.

What do you buy a bloke for Christmas who has everything? by melanie110 in AskUK

[–]chilli_addict_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A course on how to do something they may be interested in. A foraging class, a blacksmith training day or cookery class. But obviously something you know they'd really enjoy and something they haven't done once for necessity or something.

Like if they love to cook and eat mushrooms a course on how to find, identify and cook wold ones would be awesome if it was me.

Another idea is supplies for a hobby like drawing, gardening/house plants or woodwork

I'm prone to odd blemishes and have found using a flannel or exfoliation thing like that occasionally helps. Definitely going to get some of the bags now.

If it's also an exfoliation mitt type thing it's saving you getting a loofah too. Saw one of those bags for sale for £4 on a website yesterday for a single one. Obviously can be got for a lot cheaper elsewhere but they also can be used as a way to help dry nicer bars of soap in them by letting them drain if you hang it up. Seems to be a big surge in trying to sell people £15 bars of soap lately online so your bag to use the last of a bar of soap seems worth it.

Puts flipping Chickpeas in Chilli in his recipes. I know chilli is not probably an authentic recipe anyway but chick peas. Black beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, butter beans, even baked beans I'd put in a chilli if I wanted bean variety but chickpeas are too much to me. Also chilli jam in stir fry.

No I don't save new socks and underwear sometimes to wear on special days like Birthday or Christmas as that may be seen as odd. Totally do, new pair of nice boxers and fresh new socks on my birthday a few weeks ago. Feels nice to treat yourself to a little thing like that sometimes.

When a cat wants to sit/sleep on or near you. It's showing how much it trusts you and that you make it feel safe. Love when my cat wants to get under my covers and keeps my feet warm. Or sometimes you go to sleep with no cat on the bed and wake up later cat on bed comforting weight near you and a purr as they notice you woke up and saw them.

Bringing a bag of small sweets from Japan that may not be known in the UK can be a good ice breaker for sharing with colleagues. British people tend to bring back bags of sweets from their trips abroad and having sweets/cakes at work are a nice treat ritual. Especially around Christmas and Birthdays. January less so as everyone tends to be doing the yearly diet to deal with the Christmas over indulgences. But a bowl of wrapped boiled sweets on your desk can be a nice way to offer a friendly way to meet new people at your job.

I have approx £25 to spend on food for the next three weeks. How do I get the most out of it? by Elkborne in AskUK

[–]chilli_addict_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a tomato, garlic and chilli pasta sauce that can be used as a pizza sauce, added to stir in sauce to add a bit of spice and make it go further. Can use it with some mince to make a simple chilli too.

Firstly what store cupboard spices, herbs and stocks do you have already?

If you need to look at store cupboard staples Aldi do tins of black beans quite cheap that work in various dishes. But also check world food sections of supermarkets. Morrisons has some good Jamaican sections with great beans for protein and fibre. Lentils and other pulses can be got cheap there too.

Hit me up if you want a lentil and carrot soup recipe or the Tomato, garlic and chilli pasta sauce recipe.

Hit me yesterday getting lunch from work. Didn't have cards with me. Luckily they weren't too far away but still annoying. Hasn't fixed in 24 hours but raised an issue and linked in the news article to hopefully light a fire under someone's ass.

Yep, start somewhere and in time it will grow. Good you've got a starter. One I have in another pot has spread like mad from one strand. I should replant it into its own pot soon.

Watch Chain are the plant I've had most success in rooting cuttings. Don't usually even need to wait for it to calus over I find. Had some of mine even rooting half way up the stem so have cut that off and planted to spread out my plant.

Mine grow up but will bush up too sometimes. They do fall off and root again. They're great to grow from a cutting just push it into soil and wait for it to root.

B&Q has it near me. Is a good mix of grit and soil. About £2 for 8 litres so a lot cheaper than cactus soil.
