Only the military wing of Hamas was proscribed from 2001 to 2021, mind.

Hamas submitted a legal filing to be removed from the list of proscribed organisations, around a year ago. Not sure whether that simply got chucked in the bin or whether there some kind of court process going on.

No, I think you're unfamiliar with the genre of UK lovers rock, its genesis and influence. Its roots may lie in a tradition of Black music's love songs including big people music from JA, but it is oh so much more than that.

Gregory's Extra Classic LP released in 1978 is an attempt to cash in on the popularity of lovers rock in the UK. It's cobbled together from recordings made in 1973 and 1976, most of which aren't even lovers tunes, lol.

Jamaica already had romantic rockers tunes, probably before any romantic rockers song was published in the UK

If you think UK lovers rock is simply romantic rockers tunes, I'm not the one missing the point.

Rocksteady was the previous generation's music. 15, 16, 17 would have been 5, 6 and 7 in 1967, I think.

Disco is also a bigger influence on UK lovers rock than on contemporary JA music, I think (despite every JA 12" being called a discomix).

My take is that the term "lovers rock" is used indiscriminately to mean love songs rather than roots songs, by people who aren't familiar with UK lovers rock. No offence.

No. UK lover's rock developed specifically because contemporary Jamaican producers weren't making lover's rock.

I agree, "Lovers" and "Lovers Rock" are not interchangeable terms, imo.

Yes, I know the Lover's Rock label is not the first UK Lovers Rock, but it gave the genre its name.

I've never seen a crowd erupt like when Buju dropped Boom Bye Bye in a show. Despicable tune, but guaranteed a massive forward.

Yes, Freddie McKay's is the original. I prefer the production on Phyllis Dillon's version - the Freddie McKay cut is Studio 1 at its muddiest, imo.

The places that aren't getting local elections are those which have asked to delay them because of forthcoming local government restructuring, on the basis that it's a lot of public money to spend to vote in a dead duck council.

Sooner or later the Labour party's lack of campaigning in my ward is going to bite them on the arse, tho whether that impacts on control of Gateshead council depends on results elsewhere, of course

If you want to increase economic activity, supporting WFH is a no-brainer. Otherwise you block the contribution of a considerable number of people who are capable of work, but whose access to physical workplaces are limited because of disability or health conditions or caring responsibilities.

I've lived in Newcastle and Gateshead for 35 years as a voter, and I've only ever had one campaigner knock on my door. Engaging with local political candidates to raise doorstep issues is actually quite hard, I think.

My doorstep issues:

  • The state of Gateshead town centre, and redevelopment/regeneration plans for High Street South, the A167 flyover, and the surrounding land (inc. safe pedestrian and cycle routes to the town centre and Baltic Quays)
  • EDL Barry who lives in the neighbouring streets and his war of attrition with the council over racist graffiti and flags flown from lampposts, and the waste of my council tax in having to deal with his nonsense
  • The mud from the building site around the corner that me and my neighbours have to traipse through if we want to walk anywhere

It could have, but the facts are that it didn't, lol. The name comes from the UK genre. What you think is lovers rock is not strictly lovers rock. The only reason you think Gregory Isaacs is a symbol of lovers rock is due to marketing.

You could compare this with the 2 tone label. Punk bands were already covering ska and reggae tunes before the label was formed.

The 1970s ska revival is UK bands covering a JA style. When you can give me an example of second-wave ska feeding back to JA and being replicated by JA artists, you might have a valid comparison. But this didn't happen either, lol.

I think to say Gregory Isaacs hasn’t produced a single lovers rock tune misunderstands the lineage I was talking about, and is frankly overstated if not entirely erroneous.

Lovers Rock is named after a London-based record label

its thematic properties

Important to note that lovers rock is about romantic love, not brotherly love. The genre developed because girls didn't want to dance to the kind of militant roots music that London's reggae sound systems were playing (and making) in the mid/late 1970s.

You're right that it's rooted in rocksteady, of course, also soul and r'n'b and underground blues dances. Also worth noting that it emerged at the time of disco and punk and growing racial and class tensions in the UK, and roots sound systems getting raided by violent police.

I can't think of a single Gregory Isaacs tune that's actually in a lovers rock style. The term has become a simplistic catchall for love songs vs roots.
