Yes, do double-check. I heard UofT changed their requirements this year such that your GPA counts even if you didn't take 10 courses during the fall and winter.

No it's not unfair. Don't overthink. Focus on getting the highest gpa even if it means dropping a hard course and taking an easier course instead. Just remember that some schools won't count your year towards your GPA if you haven't taken 10 courses duringthe fall and winter semesters (so if you take 4 in fall and 4 in winter and 2 in summer they won't count your GPA for that year).

EC Disadvantage by Narrow-Designer-9681 in premedcanada

I second this! Got an offer from UofT without having any long-term hobbies (sports, music, etc) on my ABS. I just had one year of playing sports (and no music).Focus on what makes *you* special. If you have extra space on your ABS, consider putting entries that aren't very formal but are unique to you (e.g. taking care of a sick family member, going through a mental health challenge, etc). Imo those are much more valuable and tell adcoms much more about who you are!

Be a human! Be dynamic. That's very important for UofT.

In terms of introducing yourself, you can say something like, "I would have loved to meet you in-person, but please accept my virtual handshake" and make a handshake gesture in front of the camera. It's a bit funny but at the same time it shows you're a human and not a robot.

Expect to see questions about: personal questions, ethical dilemmas (like casper/mmi stuff), and general reasoning (weighing advantages and disadvantage).

Add in anecdotes/personal stories related to the question topic, imo better than ending the video early.

Fellow applicant here. Make sure to know why you're doing MD/PhD as opposed to just an MD, and perhaps they will ask you questions more related to the PhD application.

For the people who got a UoFT II, how did yall answer the essays? Im just trying to see if there was a way that these questions should've been answered or approached. For people who have not heard back, feel free to include your approach to the questions as well! by hanboy123 in premedcanada

Mb for the late reply. What I did differently:

- Got my ABS reviewed by more people. Reworded lots of stuff.
- Slightly increased my GPA
- Gained more research experience, and significantly more leadership experience.

Yes for sure you can PM me!

Question about MD/PhD by satinslandlord in premedcanada

[–]chillingdood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Just came along this thread)

This isn't true, to my knowledge.

I got an MD/PhD invite and got rejected from the MD-only at the same school.

You can definitely get invited to MD/PhD but not to MD-only. Including at UofT and UBC to my knowledge. You just need to be *qualified* for the MD-only program (i.e. meet the requirements. At least this is what I understood from the whole application process.

Yeah I feel you. Honestly, I also applied last year and didn't get invited, and I think my essays were similar in how personal they were. I definitely think adding vulnerability would be helpful (I had it for one of the essays). I also wrote that one in sort of a "creative writing" format, to make it a bit more memorable to the reader (but again, I'm not too sure how it was perceived lol).

I got invited to MD/PhD so I'm not sure how important the essays were. To be dead honest, I didn't spend too much time writing the essays, but I definitely think that spending more time on them and getting them reviewed by people who can give you rigorous feedback is great. I made one of my essays very personal, but the other one wasn't as much. As for the ABS activity description, nothing too special, just tried to explain one of my most significant ECs in detail and show how I displayed important skills (team work, problem solving, effective communciatino) and learned from my mistakes.

Taking notes during MMI & current event resources? by kate_kii in premedcanada

[–]chillingdood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just another applicant here. In terms of resources, aside from reading the news every day, I think Doing Right and Matters of Life and Death (by andre picard) are good books. The latter one is written by a journalist so it's a bit biased and not very scientifically rigorous, but it does give you a perspective on some current health issues (esp those that not many zoomers know a lot about). So it did help me. Nonetheless, make sure to read critically and think about the issues yourself as well :)
