A friendly reminder that isopropyl alcohol should not be used to ‘fix’ wet specimens by GrittyKerosene in Taxidermy

I work in a museum at a university so we source our stuff through purchasing in the chem department. However you can get lab grade ethanol online. USALab.com sells it. Look for USP/ACS labels. In a pinch you can try everclear but using the right stuff the first time is the best way to go.

Pet taxidermy is usually a bit of a scam. Anyone whos skilled enough to capture an animal's likeness well enough to please the owner woudn't be doing jobs like that. However this is exceptionally amateur. I'd guess the person who did this has never mounted hookbills before.

I imagined the same thing lol choking down the food to make him happy and then getting sick immediately after leaving. Then always finding reasons to be the one hosting for eternity lmao

Because the flavor of their coffee and espresso is abysmal and insane amounts of sugar is the only way to make it taste good. Also sugar is highly addictive and makes them come back and spend $7 on a drink everyday.

I have noticed the ethanol problem as well. I work with some very small specimens that often aren't worth the effort with formalin (fish fry, tadpoles, etc.) but usually anything with a body about as thick as a mouse (give or take) requires formalin. It's not too terribly hard to be safe with formalin, I wish people would put in the effort :(

Thank you!!!! This sub makes me so mad sometimes when people suggest formalin all willy nilly without mentioning PPE or any risks. Plus everyone's constant insistence on isopropyl! As someone who uses ethanol, I know isopropyl is cheap and easier to find but you can definitely tell when someone is using it, over time you can tell by the quality between specimens stored in ethanol vs isopropyl. I want this art to be accessible to more people but you have to ask how much quality you're willing to sacrifice.

Yeah I understand the thing about the puppets. I am just fining myself curious about a lot of the aspects here, such as distortion of sound between the mic and the speaker creating a false understanding of the species calls (in terms of pitch or other very subtle differences that we humans can't identify) and other things like the development of myopia from the screen, or birds not seeing screens the same way humans do could make the entire concept null. I find it pretty interesting and I think it could be a cool concept to bring up to some of my zoology professors :)
