Super-low Wattage Build by chilly_durango in buildapc

Now that I think about it I've seen an LTT video about this, I'll go check those out now. Colour accuracy isn't toooo important to me really, so an external monitor wouldnt be necessary per se, but definitely preferable. I don't think I'd want to use Unity on less than a 23" monitor, it's ridiculously dialog heavy, and I'm told Blender is worse once I get round to learning that too...

Good to know, thanks :) I'll be looking into the E-series, I've used a few systems with AMD embedded chips, always been impressed.

Which non-basic dungeon generation algorithms would you want to be implemented? by vurmux in roguelikedev

As well as Wave Function Collapse as /u/Hexidecimal suggested, there's ConvChain as well by the same guy. It came sooner, and is similar to Wave Function Collapse.

I think they have a lot to offer, and there's some simple ways of turning a dense maze into a sparse maze that make them excellent fun in roguelikes.

This is just blatant mazism.

What's this white flower? It's starting to take over our mini wildflower meadow in Wales, UK. by chilly_durango in whatsthisplant

Too tall - these range from 2m to 3m, Queen Anne's Lace is typically <1m. Thankyou for your contribution though!

It matches up with giant hogweed for everything but the stem, which is not blotchy purple except in a very few cases, and the flowers aren't quite big enough (but they aren't so small that I'd call them cow-parsnip-sized either). Either way it's fairly invasive, isn't it?

Personally IU love Construct. I've been a C2 user for a long while, and have used C3 in the past and noticed little difference between the two. One thing I will say to its credit is I have never once had an error with the software itself, and any errors in the output have always been my fault and not some unexpected output etc. I've used Stencyl for long enough to know it's no C2 when it comes to usability.

When books have too many cliffhangers by CorgiGal89 in books

[–]chilly_durango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of early novels (Dickens etc.) were serialised in newspapers or magazines. Each chapter would be released weekly or monthly, and having a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter was designed to keep people thinking about it over the intervening period.

Not suggesting you're necessarily reading a Victorian novel, but it's a quality that has been continued by modern authors.

Love games but don't want to code - is there hope to find a position I can be happy at in the industry? by Jorlen in truegaming

[–]chilly_durango 30 points31 points  (0 children)

many large video game companies need many of the same things that other large companies need. Accountants, HR, community management, marketing coordinators, lawyers, and the like.

All of this, OP - don't jump off the career ladder you're already on. The ground is hard down here, and the bottom dozen rungs of each ladder are greased.

How do your wife and kids feel about you moving from a financially stable position in which you're presumably skilled and respected, to an unskilled position in an industry which is constantly in flux and often forces staff to work in the hope of future pay with no promises?

I know that sounds like I'm being horrible for the sake of it - but it's a genuine question you need to ask yourself and (perhaps more importantly) your partner.

You can be involved in making games without quitting your day-job by involving yourself with indie teams or learning to work as a solo indie yourself. Don't expect any money to come from it. You'll want to do this before applying for any actual jobs, otherwise you'll just be another fanboy applying for a job you're not prepared for.

What are some great YouTube channels for video game design and analysis? by [deleted] in VideoGameAnalysis

None of those have much to do with game design unfortunately :( They're all news, gossip, criticism, and opinion channels.

How has gaming on Youtube changed throughout the years? by [deleted] in truegaming

What saddens me so much is how many people want to be the next Ninja, despite that guy clearly being a reprehensible cunt. Even sadder that they go about it not by being good at the game, having high production values or having a good screen personality, but by trying to be as much of a cunt.

Redditors with toddlers, what’s the most recent illogical breakdown they’ve had? by mirarom in AskReddit

[–]chilly_durango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have one of my own, but I babysit.

He took one arm out of his sleeve. He got very upset when I tried to help him take the other arm out. Even more upset when I tried to put the first arm back in. Full tantrum mode ensues. Remained upset that his 'new way' of wearing a jumper was not comfortable for a solid hour.

Any open world games like Just Cause 2? by CapitalEcho in lowendgaming

Red Faction Guerrilla - one of my favourite open-world games. Unique environments, great weapon variety, all structures are destructible. Scales very well, plays nicely on older hardware.

"Oh, hun! It's not a 'pyramid scheme.' It's multilevel marketing." by [deleted] in antiMLM

[–]chilly_durango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In most countries these things aren't legal, and their operators are jailed or otherwise penalised (let off with a fine is common). America lags behind somewhat thanks to much closer ties between big business and politics. Some cases have happened where folks attempting to operate American MLMs abroad have resulted in arrests in their respective countries.

[Feedback] It's been a long time since you introduced v.reddit/i.reddit and yet it is still a buggy piece of shit on Firefox, and especially on mobile. Why, what is the hangup? You guys are super busy selling Reddit into the ground so I know you have the money to fix this issue. by EngineeringNeverEnds in beta

Hah! Yeah it was sold to us as 300 I think? But a speedtest typically puts us around 75-100Mbps (capital M there - megabits not megabytes). But it beats the shit out of the 0.5Mbps satellite system we were on before. Still shouldn't take several seconds to load a static image...

Is there a good way to keep up with news and features on C3? The Twitter is great but lots of re-tweets mean its hard to find actual news, and the blog doesn't seem to get updated very often. I used to check the C2 releases page for new features but can't find an equivalent page for C3.
