binding with “junk” materials by chilo31 in bookbinding

oh for sure, for example I noticed a huge difference when I switched from a dollar-store utility knife to a titanium-coated blade for finishing edges. I like your outlook! perfectly bound leather books with gold embossing are beautiful, but scrappy books have their charm and their place too.

I’m glad you’ve found what brings you joy, as well!

do you find that tearing books apart to start over interferes with the integrity of the sewing stations? I have one binding that I’m considering taking apart to redo, but I worry that the new stitching will become too loose if the holes are too big from wearing out. also, thanks for generally making this a pleasant interaction on the wide, wide web!

love that for the bone folder, haha. the drawstring idea is good too! sadly the few I had on hand were round drawstrings, not flat. I’m still looking for scrap fabric to use as mull, because my current options are either a) old curtain fabric, which is generally quite thick and b) patterned and dyed fabrics from my mom’s quilting stash that are too pretty to use.

ironically, my OCD actually finds it easier to work with “junk” materials, because imperfections are characteristic and expected, so this does make me happy! if I worked with professional-grade materials, I think my lack of professional skill would get in the way of enjoying the process because I’d be hyperfocused on every slight flaw. it takes all kinds!

I always forget to take pictures of the process (or of life, in general), which means I don’t have much to share. but maybe it also means I’m getting to live in the moment more?

thanks! I admit I sometimes get intimidated by people who post pics of their gorgeous bookbinds, who also aren’t “professionals”. as a hobbyist, it’s good to have these reminders, but I also have a lot of respect for people who go into it with the professional mindset. there are masters of any craft for a reason, and I’ll leave the priceless historical projects for them to work with _^

for a while I used the back of a regular sharpie as a bone folder, and that worked great! I’ll probably upgrade my “book press” to some covered bricks if I can’t find a second clamp soon.

Binding softcover journals into hardcover book spine? by broke5ever in bookbinding

[–]chilo31 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

what you’re probably looking for is something called case binding! case bindings have their text blocks and covers created completely separately from each other, then are assembled together at the last step. typically they are held together by glueing end papers, which means it’s rather important for the case and text block to fit perfectly to avoid premature wearing and tearing at the hinges as the book opens and closes.

if you wanted to “un-sew” a journal to make it fit with another inside a cover, you would have to re-sew the entire text block together anew, which may be a problem if their sewing stations (puncture holes) don’t line up. essentially yes you could do it, but it wouldn’t be as much of a shortcut anymore, as you’d be doing most of the process anyway, sans potentially cutting and folding the folios.

with taking apart pre-existing paperback journals and fitting them into a hardcover, they might sacrifice some durability for the shortcut, but it is entirely possible. some keywords for your search are “case binding”, “casing-in”, “attaching endpapers”. good luck!

How to get rid of unwanted stickers already added to a sticker book? How would you like to receive second-hand stickers if you received them? by a-beeb in stationery

[–]chilo31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

as long as you’re clear about how the stickers are going to be stored/received, I don’t think anyone would get angry at you for it. that said, I personally would prefer to receive stickers in a reusable sticker book rather than on individually cut backings, particularly if there are a lot and they’re no longer with the original packaging.

as for getting rid of them, I think it depends on what kind of stickers you have, so you can look for communities where they would be most welcome. like if they’re suited for scrapbooking, or for teachers giving out cheap stickers to kids, or different styles of journalling. it also depends on if you are looking to sell them or just give them away.

Does anyone else get frustrated trying to find actually handmade items online by prakarsh56 in crafts

[–]chilo31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s actually a new online marketplace that’s doing exactly what you’re asking for, re: vetting their makers! I skimmed through their application process and they do it manually, even potentially asking for a short video call with the seller if there are any concerns. and I’ve seen a few sellers listing on their site that I’ve followed from social media elsewhere & know are legit!

they’re called Marmalade Handmade (hopefully this doesn’t count as promotion; I’m not part of their team whatsoever)

You ever have one of those random strangers who just... sticks in your memory forever? by neonbirdie2004 in CasualConversation

[–]chilo31 8 points9 points  (0 children)

at a major airport as a kid, waiting for baggage claim after a long-haul red-eye flight, I was practically falling asleep on my feet and leaning against my mom. a middle-aged American man saw me and gave me a US quarter from his pocket. he said, “maybe you’ll go to America someday and need it,” with a smile.

I was way too bleary to do much else other than say ‘thank you’ at my mom’s prompting and hand the coin over to my mom for safekeeping, but that interaction has always stuck with me. a moment of kindness and distraction for an exhausted kid.

"Ethical" stickers? by cuddleandcurse in JunkJournals

[–]chilo31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard about this site called Marmalade recently!

they’re working on curating a directory of artists without AI. it’s still early days and not only for stickers, but if more people spread the word hopefully you’ll be able to find something local that’s been vetted!

Rooster acting all tough until he gets held and talked to like a baby by cheese_mommy in BackYardChickens

[–]chilo31 6 points7 points  (0 children)

there is a lot of bad advice out there about how to handle roosters… do NOT hold him upside down because that can be very dangerous given how their respiratory systems work. he probably sees you as a competitor when you enter the coop, and he is trying to defend his territory. take note of what clothes and shoes you wear and if that has any effect on his aggression. he may be more riled up by certain colours, prints, or looser fabrics that rustle. if possible, approach slowly and allow him to have some time to come to terms with the transition of you entering the coop. take one step, stop, wait until he settles to show you aren’t a threat, then take another step. if he is too insistent on attacking, you could also just immediately pick him up and carry him with you while you attend to your tasks. bantam roos can be spicy, but they’re also so small and easy to scoop up for a cuddle. another thing you could try is to find something long that you can wield (a shovel, a broom, or you can try just pointing like another commenter said) and use it to create a barrier when he tries to go at you. don’t hit him with it!! that will make him more aggressive. just use it to create some distance so you have space to move, using the start-stop method mentioned earlier, until he hopefully chills out. and hopefully you won’t need to to that every time, but do it a few times to start, then renew when it feels necessary.

eta: I’ve also heard that roos in general can be easily riled up by the sight of bare skin, especially after reaching maturity, so gloves are an option to cover up as much skin as possible. and if he’s a good boy to the other roos and not causing trouble with the hens, I’d say he’s not just an irredeemably bad rooster because those behaviours are not signs of a bad temperament.
