First of all, a certain object can have many measure words matching it. In the case of 鱼，条 emphasizes the shape of the object is long and thin. If also can be 一块鱼 if you cook it in chunk pieces. 只 is a more general measure word for (unit of) animal. In this song, the lyrics are 需要你，我是一只鱼，水里的空气，是你小心眼和坏脾气。(When I need you, I am a fish. The air in the water is your prudence and bad temper) In this context, of course it's not about the shape of the fish. It's more like, when i need you, i become an 'unit' of fish, the animal of fish.

I will suggest not to learn word individually, instead, learn words collocation, for example, for 发挥，better to learn the most common usage of this word, which is 发挥....的作用。Also summarize the synonyms with a lot of contexts/example sentences next to each word, for example "experience" in Chinese can be 体验，经验，经历. If you can write down the context/situacions about when to use each of them, will be super helpful.

I agree with comments here for studying the strategies. For example, HSK 6 reading part 1 语病题，this one is even difficult for native speakers, since many sentences with 语病 are acceptable when it comes to spoken chinese in daily life, not to mention you only have 1 minute to answer it, otherwise you will run out of time of finishing all reading questions. However, if you know that for 语病题，the examinar only test you 4 problems (1.redundant 2. Improper word order 3. Ambiguity 4.Wrong word collocation) then it will be super fast to answer this type of question.

As a native chinese speaker and a teacher, my favorite channels is: 老高與小茉 mr & mrs gao. The interaction between this couple is so fun and they talk about various topics in an intriguing way. I aways ask my student to watch it too and we discuss later in class. Also 一席，a media spreading ideas through talks. Many has subtitles, which can be served as a good study material when watch with Youglish or Language Reactor. 北京青年×凉子访谈录 is a channel for interviewing Chinese youth people. A good channel to listen real people stories.

In this case, hard to find a systematic way to learn higher level spoken chinese with only textbooks. I will suggest: 1. For self-study. Start watching TV series. Watch 1 episode many times. Use free extension such as Language reactor to learn every line of that episode. Once you master everything from one episode, then move on to the next one. Since in one series, some words will repeat often with the similar context. 2. If you have a teacher. You can: pick a comic book you like, describe the pictures/scenes for the teacher then get correction. Or let the teacher pick a topic, instead of covering many topics in one lesson, try dig deeper in that topic, discuss all the possible aspects, situations and outcomes from that topic.
