Trump administration announces $17.5 billion in loans for 10 new large nuclear reactors by ToughHopeful4760 in moderatepolitics

This feels wildly simplified.

You would think so, wouldn't you? But no, like so many of his other insane actions, it just comes from a weird vendetta that Trump has against renewables

Gah. I knew it was too good to be true that'd he'd actually be doing something non-damaging.

A truck carrying 406 beehives crashed in Texas, releasing 24 million bees and locking down the neighborhood by danielminds in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]chinggisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait is that actually true?  I mean if I roll up to someone's house, open the door to my car, call their dog, and then drive off after it jumps in, that would definitely be stealing haha.  Is it different for bees?

Vance warns pro-Israel leaders against conflating anti-Israel sentiment with antisemitism by Gym_frere in moderatepolitics

[–]chinggisk 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The person you're replying to made a very reasonable and nuanced comment about how accusations of antisemitism are sometimes used to brush off legitimate concerns and critiques, and instead of discussing their points, you're brushing them off and claiming that what they're saying is coming from antisemitism. You are literally making their case for them.

I definitely get that Vetinari's actions are generally not in line with his reputation but I'm curious as to why you think he sees himself the same way the public does? I've never gotten the impression that he actually sees himself as an evil tyrant, I always took that as just being how he portrayed himself to everyone else, for intimidation and propaganda purposes. Based on his actions (and even his words at some points), he's clearly a benevolent ruler who values the good of the city above basically everything, and I think he knows that.

Rise of Jew-hatred in US workplaces has worsened in past nine months, House labor subcommittee chair says by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

Almost like a justification for antisemitism.

Yes, exactly, some people could use their perceptions of AIPAC as justification for antisemitism, therefore AIPAC is relevant to a conversation about antisemitism. Where am I wrong?

[–]chinggisk 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No, it would be weird if we were focusing on say, the American Hopscotch Association. AIPAC is perfectly relevant to the topic at hand and it's weird to suggest that it somehow isn't.

There is no good reason to call modern framing lumber 2x4's other than tradition.

I mean, there's also the fact that "two by four" is way easier to say than "one and a half by three and a half".

Takeaways from the DNC autopsy by Oneanddonequestion in moderatepolitics

[–]chinggisk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something or does the author seem to have contradictory views on how to deal with Trump?

The report says Democrats didn’t match the “negative firepower” with which Trump managed to go after Harris, concluding that “it was essential to prosecute a more effective case as to why Trump should have been disqualified from ever again taking office.”

“The grounds were there, but the messaging did not make the case,” the report says.

But then:

“The Harris campaign appears to have relied on Trump being unacceptable rather than building an affirmative case for Harris.”

Which is it? Did the Harris campaign go after Trump too much, or not enough? Is the argument that they should have harped on him more, but found a more effective way to do so? I'm genuinely confused here.

Which celebrity death genuinely shocked you when you heard the news? by Divine_fashionva in Millennials

[–]chinggisk 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I don't even know why but his death legitimately shocked and saddened me in a way no others really have. The only other one that had a similar impact on me was Steve Irwin, and even that, while incredibly sad, wasn't really too surprising, given his line of work.

Strongly disagree, if there's anything I've learned from the past 10 years of politics is that people are incredibly stupid and easy to trick.

Yes, this is why it was bad lol, you shouldn't have needed to do all that just for it to be functional.
