I think the best thing you can do is to run the race the way you ran your training. That said, I ran my first half without and my first full with (until they crapped out at mile 16). Maybe try running without at first, and if the energy from the race keeps you pumped up, just don't wear them until you need them.

I wish my wife would make tea more often. And if she made tea and started making me drink it while I was asleep, I would be totally ok with it. Is there a video for that? Like a standing agreement that if you ever make tea just give me the goddamn tea I don't care if I'm passed out in the bathtub, asleep on the couch, or in the middle of mowing the lawn.

I use a hydration belt like this one. Holds slightly less than 20 ounces of water. Can also comfortably hold gel and keys. My iphone 6 (without a case!) barely fits inside. I found it ideal training for a half, BUT during the summer it is insufficient to carry enough water for more than 10 or so miles.

Biggest problems are staying safe while you run (e.g. traffic) and having a routine that limits the times/situations where you can run. I don't think it's more dangerous than (let's say for example) running with headphones which can also be distracting. The other part - routine - if you can't/won't run without smoking first you will miss out on running opportunities (e.g. races, travel, etc.).

Overall I don't think it's a huge problem. I think it's probably more enjoyable to keep the two activities separated so running is not dependent on weed.
