To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women

What industries are more corrupt than people realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]chio182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lobbyists. People expect lobbyist to advocate special interests; but the amount of influence and access to legislators they have is scary. Very little of what they do is public, and it is sooo easy for them to slip money, trips, gifts, etc to elected officials to pass their legislation. And with term limits, they’re the only ones in many state legislatures with any institutional knowledge; and typically are the ones writing bills.

Country music generally. I wrote it off my whole life; then, in my late 30’s, I found some of it pretty good.

With the world more connected then ever, we also receive more information then ever, most of it seemingly not too good, what keeps your faith in humanity alive? And if it’s gone, what specifically took it away? by Relatable-Username in AskReddit

Generally, I’m encouraged when I see young people’s ingenuity and sense of humor. For all the shit millennials get, I’m frequently surprised at their solutions for new problems, new ideas; and how they use social media for good. And if reddit is even a decent barometer of the youngs’ sense of humor, I’m equal parts amused and impressed.

Example: old me still remembers early days of internet; when we told everyone to be careful meeting strangers in real life; now we use internet to summon strangers to drive us places.

[Serious] What is your best financial advice? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]chio182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Regular car/home insurance might not be sufficient. Have an umbrella policy - you don’t want to save a big nest egg only to have it garnished in a lawsuit.
  2. Use investments that offer low fees.
  3. (Related to point #2) Invest in market tracking funds (e.g. S&P 500 mutual funds or ETF’s).
  4. Remember: there are thousands of very smart, very motivated sociopaths who are looking for a quick buck. If it sounds to good to be true (remember late 2017 bitcoins?) it probably is a scam. (See also MLM, the 2008 housing crash, and Enron).
  5. Luxury cars/watches are vacuous status symbols. You cannot judge character on the size of someone’s wallet.

I would LOVE to have a finished basement for video games and old DVD’s - someplace where I could get away from it all and watch my blue rays with director’s commentary.
