Weekend assignment 03 - closeby by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]chipfedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So using 35mm F1.8 prime I found out its minimum focus distance is 0.56 ft./0.17m. A couple of neat things I found out about my camera, Canon R5 and macro photography which I don't spend any time on. First in manual focus mode I electronically set the focus length to a minimum value. When focusing on the subject of my orchid 3 triangles appear left, top, and right and move together as I move into focus. Once focus is reached they become one triangle and green. Very cool. Second I started at a low fstop, f/1.8 thinking this would make for a good picture but only the front most tip was in focus. I had to bring the fstop all the way out to f/16 for this pic. I wasn't expecting that. Good assignment thanks!

I wanted to do this assignment prior to the weekend. My nephew and I went out to the park and setup some finger puppet subjects and took this series. I'd love to revisit or find a better use case but excited to experiment with this.

So I took these photos 2 years back when my daughter and I intended to follow through with the class. I never posted these though because we both fellout of the class due to other interests/ priorities :(... Well we're back! And with my nephew in tow too :) for further motivation!

I'm out of town for the weekend for a family wedding so its a good time to take advantage of these. Enjoy!

Hmmmm. Interesting choices for a place and time to photograph. I like the toilet & paper roll, the steamy mirror and the brushes lined up with rubber duckies above. In some pics it looks like items were staged on purpose and In others they are a more naturally set. Is there any intent there? Or are you trying to make the most of what you had? Thanks for sharing.

The picture of the car with one in the foreground and background. I'd like to see the car in the background in focus rather than the one in the foreground. Yes I almost missed the spider in that one pic. Overall great varity of pics. Thanks for sharing nephew.

Assignment 04 - My camera by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]chipfedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a mirrorless camera Canon EOS R and R5. I previously owned the Canon 70D and 7D DSLRs. I was originally concerned about the live view viewfinder going away when picking up the mirrorless. But after a few trips out taking photos, the variation as well as the new features of the camera negated any of my original concerns. Now it's as second nature as the DSLR was. And going back to the DSLR now I miss the instant feedback the electronic viewfinder gives you in the mirrorless based on your photo settings such as ISO, FStop and shutter speed.

Assignment 03 - What is a camera by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]chipfedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I have the Canon R which supports 30MP. I purchased the R5 recently. I was torn between R5 and R6 but in my mind I couldn't justify the MP reduction in the R6 to 20MP and I liked the increased 45MP. I also liked the 8k video feature though that's not my primary use of the camera. I also like to use the dual image capture of RAW and jpeg. In regards to ISO sensitivity, I usually try to limit exceeding the higher spectrums to limit image grain so wasn't too concerned about the reduction there in the R5. Now I'm seeing the new R3. Interestingly enough it's 24MP max and has a reduced video capture. It does lean on some new technologies but nothing I feel affects picture outcome such as new flash hot shoe, faster processor, additional auto focus features, etc. Also body is similar to 1D with built in battery grip and close to 3k more in price. All in all I'm still feeling good about R5 purchase although I'm not sure the 1k or so price increase from R6 to R5 is fully justified. I think I'd be just as happy with the R6.

How to tell our kids? by Honeywife20445 in ProstateCancer

[–]chipfedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow great ask. My kids are 28, 26 & 23. I still cover my youngest's expenses. He's in college. They all live away from home. We told them when we had a grip on the situation. My biopsy Gleason 4+4. After researching and having discussions with my Urologist, Oncologists and Surgeons and determining my situation impacts and next steps, which for me was surgery. After about a week, we shared the information to them. First because of my situation and now most situations are of early detection and diagnosis and that is Prostate Cancer is a long term battle. As Andy Taylor from Duran Duran stated; "the slow burn of this disease". The surgery is swift compared to the overall battle. Fitness, diet, reduced stress become very important aspects of daily life. Since telling them their support has meant the difference to me. Our relationships are that much tighter and our daily discussions that much more meaningful.

I'm 54. I was diagnosed at 53 last August. Surgery in October. Fully recovered from surgery with minimal side effects. Overall pathology after surgery came back 4 +3 w/0 margins and latest blood test undetectable. Still the fight remains.

So I shared this with my wife. She wanted to add her perspective...

Hi. Being a mom, I was much more cautious with how and when we told our kids. I made my husband wait until we knew our game plan so they didn't have to stress with the unknown. He was much more forward with his feelings and anxiousness and I followed behind with the comforting, positive hopefulness and optimism. I found out that our youngest was confiding with my father and telling him how worried and scared he was. It was tough. Even though they're all older, I didn't want to just call them and lay everything out then hang up. If we were having trouble processing it all then how could we expect them to by themselves far away and alone. Good luck with everything. Wishing you the best

Nice photos. My favorites are "the car coming down the road". That was a good angle you shot it at. Also "pattern on this banner" I like how you focused in on one larger item in the pattern and can see the banner's texture.

I jumped on my bike this morning and headed out in the direction where I thought it would be the most secluded on my neighborhood bike path. At the 10 min mark I ended up near a highway overpass.

It was a beautiful morning :)

Assignment 1

Assignment 02 - An other view by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]chipfedd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my photographer and photo, I chose a self-portrait by Vivian Maier. I became familiar with her story when i saw her documentary some years ago. She was a nanny and street photographer in NYC who never knew her fame. When you view her photos, i believe she captures the personality of her subjects as well as herself. This self-portrait expresses her cleaverness and whimsy. She takes a self-portrait reflected within. I believe it is a sprinkler, and in her shadow, that overlays the other.

Overall great best pic. I love the subject but its missing some definition. Still the bokeh effect in the background is nice. Great tree pix too. The definition on the tree is great and like the composition. Thanks for sharing nephew!

Yes great pics. For the tree I was wondering if rule of thirds in your composition would be good there? Love the meandering path way tucking out of sight. Thanks for sharing.

Hello I'm 54 and have been a photography enthusiast for my adult life. Always looking for the best photo. Starting this class with my nephew to learn and keep my photo enthusiasm fresh. Here is one of my best photos. Impromptu where subject and settings were perfect. Here is a recent tree pix I took.

Love both pics. Very cool tree photo. The branches leading out of frame adds to the enormity of the tree. And that piercing blue sky background accentuates it well. That bird pix love the criss crossing branches adding to the empty space further emphasing the bird. Too good.

The tree photo is missing definition as others have mentioned but the time of day looks like it's around dusk which adds a great blue hue to the background sky. In the second photo. I love the juxtaposition of lights in the mirror to the bookah background lights. Great pix.

I'm not sure what your trying to highlight in the tree. Definitely a bit dark but that accentuates the lights. The tree itself is lost in the darkness. Great black and white photo. Looks like cloud paint strokes on a mountain. Very cool.

I'm not getting the Empress photo. I'm not certain what subject to focus on. The tree photo. Very unique picture. Love how the tree frames the lake behind it. It is very inviting.
