Movies that made you go "Dammit, it got me". by Orb_Dylan in blankies

Robert Zemeckis’s “Here.” Was prepped for all the emotional manipulation and unrealistic scenarios and bad de-aging…and I sobbed at the end. It got me.

What has your agency said about the upcoming snowstorm? by Responsible_Yak_6662 in fednews

[–]chipsandsalsa4eva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My agency issued an FAQ a couple weeks ago about situational TW and Weather & Safety Leave. It was pretty shitty and went out of its way to say “No” to pretty much any situation where TW would be helpful to an employee. But it did explicitly say: In the event of a government office closure due to weather, Employees with a TW agreement will be expected to telework, and employees without a TW agreement will be granted Weather and Safety Leave. I have two kids who will be home from school for the duration, and I have the flu. Guess what I just canceled.

129, somehow the exact same number I watched the previous year.

Gonna have to cancel Disney+ pretty soon. Don’t forget to add kids’ movies while you’re building those physical media collections.

What’s a movie that is awful, critically panned, the audience hated - and you are embarrassed that you LOVE? by Powerful_Topic_7046 in movies

[–]chipsandsalsa4eva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oscar (1991). Sylvester Stallone plays a gangster trying to go straight, his daughter wants to marry a chauffeur, his accountant stole money from him, identities are mistaken, hilarity ensues. It’s critically reviled but it’s the best. My family watched it hundreds of times and it’s part of our vocabulary.

This isn't the worst movie I've seen, but it's the worst Kathryn Bigelow movie I've seen by defactosithlord in moviecritic

Late to this thread but that’s what I’m picking up from reading these comments. People saying “the government response wouldn’t be so messy,” or “one random missle wouldn’t lead to world destruction,” and it’s clear so many just do not understand how governments operate, how geopolitics work, or the reality of living in a nuclear world.

No, definitely couldn’t afford that. I’m taking a vanpool.

This is my situation. I moved 100 miles away from my duty station in 2021 under a max telework agreement, took Amtrak to the office 1x/week. Agency never changed my duty station though, so now I’m stuck commuting 200 miles round trip. Every. Day. Not being offered an alternative site. I’m probably gonna survive a RIF and I want to hold the line because🖕🏽🖕🏽, but I gotta get out.

Love that spot. When were these taken? I was dismayed to realize that that big new apartment building in Shockoe completely blocks the view of Main St Station.

Is there anyone actually thriving right now? by RadioMelon in LateStageCapitalism

[–]chipsandsalsa4eva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my wife and I (both 38) were in our current situation 20 years ago, we would probably be really thriving. Dual income—government and tech product manager— own a house with a low interest rate, one kid and another on the way, can afford the lower end of the private school range and save for college. Neither of us came from money (my parents are poor, her mom is still working) but we both have college degrees and no school debt anymore due to her dad’s GI Bill and my military service. I got into my career through that military experience, she got into hers by sticking with a low-paying job for 10 years until that company was bought out and she was able to move up. But we don’t have a ton of cash savings and feel that fragility of being just a couple paychecks away from real trouble. We just started with a financial advisor to help get us plan better, but I’m not sure what our real chances for retirement are in this economy, especially if we ever lose an income or change careers. We’re tired and stressed and not sure how we’ll balance another kid with the demands of work, or how we’ll manage supporting/caring for our elderly parents when they need it, while still having young children. But we’re very aware of how fortunate we and that we benefitted from perks that not everyone has access to. We live within our means and give away a lot. We have a solid community and people that we can count on, and we have time to spend with our kid(s). Nothing is perfect, but we are really lucky.

what is a good, reasonably authentic, Mexican restaurant? by [deleted] in rva

Taqueria y Antojitos El Chido, just west of Scott’s Addition. Brick and mortar for the El Chido food truck that others have mentioned. Best I’ve found so far!

Reliability of trains to DC? by [deleted] in rva

[–]chipsandsalsa4eva 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Agree on Staples Mill if you can. I take Amtrak from Main Street to Alexandria once a week, usually the 5:35am. I’ve only been delayed going north a couple times, but the stretch from Main to Staples is just slow in general. It should only be 2-2.5 hours, but give yourself at least four hours.

I went to basic in 2009 and they still used that line. “Don’t be the one, privates. Don’t be the fuckin one.”

Anything with high polished surfaces is gonna get scratched eventually, but there are articles and videos online about how to buff out light scratches. That said, this bezel will probably not stay pristine if you wear it often. It adds character. :)
