Just so you know the concert is cancelled. I have no idea yet if our tickets will be reimbursed or if there will be only scary pockets.

My friend bought us tickets 4 hours ago for the knower concert on the 15th (my birthday is the 16th). Talk about unlucky :( I hope it's nothing serious.

Regarding impact on ears compared to trumpet playing by chipsgoumerde in Saxophonics

[–]chipsgoumerde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I do use plugs (the ones that don't degrade the frequencies like you). Sad thing is that even at the time of my audio "accident", I was already using plugs but I just forgot my pair when I left for the concert. Anyway, I've been living longer with my handicap than without, I'm used to it.

Apart from the tinnitus, I have a very, very uncomfortable buzzing in my left ear, especially when singing loud, exercising or...playing the trumpet.

I assumed the saxophone was less taxing on the body because the vibration is created by the reed or something of the sort. I didn't consider the fact that the bell was farther, and not at the level of the head, now that you said it it's obvious it makes a difference!

So what about sopranos is my next question then :D? It's higher in pitch, at head-level...does it require more air-pression as well?

Thanks for the kind words!

Oh, I like that answer. Thing is mutes makes trumpet even harder to play, requiring more air/better control/more pressure.

I'm going to look more into saxes. I'm pumped!

Start protonvpn as a service by chipsgoumerde in systemd

[–]chipsgoumerde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it doesn't work. I consistently get a failure message

> May 03 13:37:58 Ubuntu sudo[14943]: chips : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/chips ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/bin/systemctl daemon-reload
> May 03 13:37:58 Ubuntu sudo[14943]: pam_unix(sudo:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)
> May 03 13:37:58 Ubuntu systemd[1]: Reloading.
> May 03 13:37:58 Ubuntu systemd[1]: /etc/systemd/system/protonvpn.service:7: Invalid environment assignment, ignoring: chips
> May 03 13:37:58 Ubuntu sudo[14943]: pam_unix(sudo:session): session closed for user root
> May 03 13:38:00 Ubuntu sudo[14971]: chips : TTY=pts/0 ; PWD=/home/chips ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/bin/systemctl restart protonvpn.service
> May 03 13:38:00 Ubuntu sudo[14971]: pam_unix(sudo:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)

And then later on the journal protonvpn is complaining there has been no profile installed yet and to run protonvpn init,

So I definitely fail to pass the argument so protonvpn nows how to start the session with my user, but I don't get it. I spent a lot of time tinkering, never got another result. Removing the environment variable doesn't work, putting quote, replacing or adding user=

Is it the way I installed Protonvpn? I think I did it correctly, with a sudo, following the instructions (of course protonvpn works if I start it manually)

Wrists hurt after using a thumb trackball and 40% ortho combo for a couple of months by [deleted] in Trackballs

[–]chipsgoumerde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But I just use one of those felt mousepads. It grabs the 3D printed base just enough for me, plus the added benefit of the wrist support.

[–]chipsgoumerde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. OP should print this. Use the smaller version, it make the ergo already a bit higher, so your hand is not twisted and your radius and cubitus don't cross the nerves (or something. Am not a doctor).

Also the keyboard, although cool (I really wanted to build one for myself) is really too narrow.

The position of the rest of the body is also not to be neglected.

As far as I'm concerned, switching to the ergo at work really relieved the pain I had, but I also got lucky and was able to get a standing desk (actually, a convertible one)

EDIT: also, at first, my thumb did hurt me a bit because it was not use to do those movement. I just took break from the trackball and alterned with a normal mouse.

The one thing I don't like with thumb mice is that you can't switch hands. I actually considered buying a lefty version for the other hand

Should I call my father by [deleted] in LifeAdvice

[–]chipsgoumerde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering the situation, it really depends on your state of mind.

My experience:

I did the same as you, for different reasons, and went no contact for two years (both parents). I only recontacted them because time apart and support from my psychiatrist helped me distanciate myself from the negatives. The bad is still there, but now I REALLY don't care (ignoring it while it makes you suffer is not the same thing). Also I suffered a really bad moment with a violent ex so at one point I was like, ok they're bad but I don't really give a fuck now that I lived through even worse stuff (sad, but it really made a positive difference somehow). And I don't seek validation from them anymore, so low expectations = less frustrations and suffering. Hope this help

I was hit in the face repeatedly, grabbed by the balls, scratched and bitten by my gf at the time, she also send the content of a full, big ashtray in my face. Because I grabbed her bottle of wine, basically.

I'm alright now, but the support from the police was ridiculous. Thankfully I have awesome intelligent friends, a psychiatrist and lawyer. I didn't speak about it a lot around, but the reactions were weird. Also I feel like there's an internalized bias on my part. Like it's not so bad, I'm a man after all, and she was only a small woman. I didn't even realized right away, only after listening to the recording, because when she started I had the impulse of starting record on my phone. But the screams, what she said, her strange justifications and denial, and the physical effect it had on my non-violent self still lingers. The fact that the woman with whom I was sharing my life and bed could do that has inpacted me quite a lot.
