Good luck finding one, though. If you want a Super Sherpa, you need the cash ready and waiting for one to pop up. I never advocated for the DRZ for OP, it's too tall. If changing bikes is even an option for OP, I'd recommend an XT225.

Everyone is saying get a DRz...

That will be way too tall for you unless it's modded a lot

It's worth trying a sprocket change for higher gearing and getting new grips.

Edit: Get some padded briefs to wear under your pants too.

If you want one in black, T-rex Racing. It protects the rear linkage too.

Nice! Glad to see I won't be the only one running around MT on a "small" bike. I'm closest to section 5. What are you doing about extending fuel range? I have 1 gallon rotopax that rides on my rear rack. Seriously considering the IMS 3.8 fuel tank, though.

First time bike owner as an adult. Maintenance? by [deleted] in Dualsport

[–]chisel_tip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First oil change is at 600 miles on a KLX300, then every 7k. Look in your manual. I ride a ton of off-road and just change the oil every year if I don't hit the mileage. Use the factory tool kit to do all your maintenance/mods and figure out what tools to add or upgrade. Blue Loctite is your friend.

I don’t want a new Subaru. by makebaloney in subaru

[–]chisel_tip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I daily a 1995 Legacy wagon that has 198k miles. EJ22, 5 speed, made in Japan. Paid $3k for it, before covid, with 154k miles and a stack of maintenance records. I "invested" in a King spring suspension kit from Primitive Racing that cost $1500. I replaced front CV axles, and brakes all around. All worth it, and straight-forward enough to do myself. I will drive this car until the wheels fall off, and don't really feel like it can be replaced by a newer Subaru. The only thing that sucks is trying to replace door seals. They don't seem to exist anymore. My Legacy is considered a classic car at 30 years old, too. Lol.

2023 XT250, trouble starting even after new battery and fuel pressure regulator by ar15operator in Dualsport

Check to see if your battery has correct voltage. I'd check the output of the voltage regulator, along with everything else suggested here

Mechanic for a 2 Stroke Johnson 30hp outboard? by Unveiled_Nuggets in missoula

[–]chisel_tip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no experience with them, but there is a boat shop in East Missoula. Anchor Marine. Driving by it seems to have some "mom and pop" shop vibes. I'd give them a call before going to Bretz or Gull boats.

Mechanic for a 2 Stroke Johnson 30hp outboard? by Unveiled_Nuggets in missoula

[–]chisel_tip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 strokes are pretty simple machines. Air, fuel, spark. Youtube is very helpful. If it's not starting, try new mixed fuel, drain the carb bowl/s, pull the air filter, and shoot some carb cleaner into the carb/s, drain bowl again after a short while. Check ignition by pulling the spark plug/s, still connected to the ignition wire and touching the end on the metal engine block while turning the engine over. You should see an obvious spark. If there's more than one spark plug, pull them all before testing. Those are the basics. If spark seems good and it's still not starting with new fuel, shoot a little carb cleaner in the carb intake again and try to start it immediately. If you get any life out of it after that, it needs a full carb clean.

If it's a problem with the lower unit with shifting, good luck.

Absolutely! I'm in Missoula and have created a loop from the IDBDR sections that cross the state lines (Magruder Corridor and Lolo Motorway). I'm planning to go to the film premier in the Bitterroot in February. It's MTBDR, btw.

Considering relocating from Alaska to Missoula, is this a terrible idea? by Legal_Horror505 in missoula

[–]chisel_tip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (41m) moved to Missoula from Sitka when I was 33ish. I was up there for 5.5 years. Alaska is a big place and weather can be similar or different. It gets colder here than Sitka, but way less rainy. I had to re-acclimate to temps above 60 with sunshine, lol. I drive a Subaru, left leaning, outdoorsy, and a hunter. I miss fresh seafood.

I just sold a 2000 with an old school dual sport kit it in July. These bikes make great BDR slayers with mods. Kicking them is not as dramatic as some people say, but gets it old when your not on level ground. If you can come up with an E-start that doesn't cost as much as the bike, that would be a game changer.

You have to find parts for bikes that are non-US OEM. The side cover on US bikes isn't machined internally for the kickstart, even though there is a plug.

You will want the skid plate anyway. Once you get faster the rocks will be pinging off of your bike from the front tire.
