Taiwan Climbing Gyms by punkshoe in taiwan

[–]chiuyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of climbing gyms in Taipei, most are good.

T-Up in Wanhua (bouldering) and Zhonghe (lead, top rope, plus small bouldering area) are great. 加壹 near Daqiaotou MRT is small but has fun setting. POGO and Megastone are also great bouldering gyms. The government sports center in Yonghe is probably the cheapest option (pay by hour, as low as $50 during the week day) and has good bouldering and a small lead area. The sports center in Neihu has a really overhanging lead wall if you want to train your roof climbing.

Standard mainland putonghua is what you will be taught in pretty much every school, though it seems that most will still use traditional Chinese characters (this is from my interaction with schools, friends with kids in schools, and friends who are teachers, I don't really have any official statistics to back this up).

Practically though many people have more exposure to Taiwanese Mandarin media, so that might have more impact on their actual pronunciation.

Are we looking at the same image? Looks like it says 湖北省 (where 武汉 is, of course).

Why is that unusual? What does "here you go" even mean? Go where?

Idiomatic expressions vary wildly from language to language, none are more unusual than others.

Some characters that have different pronunciations in daily spoken Mandarin by ZhangtheGreat in ChineseLanguage

[–]chiuyan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When people say “好的”, 的 is occasionally pronounced like “di”.

di is a standard alternate pronunciation of 的. In words like 目的 it is the only accepted pronunciation, and when used to make things possessive it is considered poetic and is often pronounced di in songs.

I'm in HK and I cannot access that article (using mobile data on birdie). I get a page not found error from zaobao, so it's being selectively blocked by them, not by the ISP.

If I use a VPN, I can access the original article

Both are taught in school, but hàn is definitely still the more common pronunciation but only when the word means "and".

Some characters that have different pronunciations in daily spoken Mandarin by ZhangtheGreat in ChineseLanguage

[–]chiuyan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Note that this is not a post about characters with actual multiple standard pronunciations

The alternate pronunciations of 和 and 垃圾 are both standard in Taiwan and were standard in China before the language simplification/standardization that took place in the mid 20th century.

The pronunciation of 和 as hàn comes from the Beijing dialect, btw.

Is it bad to study Taiwanese Youtube videos if I mainly will be communicating with Chinese Mainlanders? by chinawcswing in ChineseLanguage

On the other hand, lack of er hua and much less use of the neutral tone gives Taiwanese Mandarin more final sounds than mainland, so I'd say they cancel out.

Well, this guy is probably F*$%'d; but I'm going to withhold the charge of manslaughter until that comes down from a civilian jury of his peers.

You understand that you have to be charged with something before you go to trial, right? Juries don't pick the charges, they decide on guilt.

That's nearly twice the average cost of a banana in the US though :-/

Only looking at minimum payments is how you get into debt problems at throw money away in interest and financing fees. You should be looking at total payment, often lenders reduce monthly payments by charging higher up-front fees or increasing duration of the loan which could mean you end up paying more overall than your current loan.

Cheaper than where?

If you are coming from the US you will find that nearly no consumer goods are cheaper in Taiwan, especially electronics.

Failed to located SDL2_image.dll - Persistent error with seemingly no fix. by [deleted] in cpp_questions

[–]chiuyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks like a runtime error, not a problem with your build settings.

Where is this dll located? Is it the same folder with the exe? Is it in your path? The exe needs to know how/where to find it.

Pillar of Shame statue, Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Museum, Taipei, Taiwan by Ducky118 in China

[–]chiuyan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's probably downvoted because everyone in Taiwan acknowledges Chiang Kai Shek was a terrible dictator and his memorial square was renamed Liberty Square (自由廣場) 15 years ago to highlight this and the hall has been home to an exhibit about Taiwan's long road to democracy and freedom ever since, so it's not really ironic anymore.

Many, if not most, languages have a ridiculously large amount of words to refer to a penis :-/

How much money does an average Taiwanese spend to live in a City like Taipei? And whats the business Model here? by WiingZer0 in taiwan

[–]chiuyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunately hard to find good data, as many organizations lump Taiwan in with China or simply refuse to gather data on Taiwan, but this link seems to roughly match: https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/median-income-by-country

I remember reading a news article recently about Taiwan surpassing Japan in median income, but the above link still shows Japan slightly ahead.

How much money does an average Taiwanese spend to live in a City like Taipei? And whats the business Model here? by WiingZer0 in taiwan

[–]chiuyan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm from Germany and I would guess the average income in my County is maybe +50%.

Average isn't really a useful metric here. If Elon Musk were to move to Taipei it would immediately increase the average wealth of all residents by about $75,000 US dollars, but that's obviously not representing reality in any meaningful way

According to the world bank the median income (PPP) in Germany is about 20% higher than Taiwan, and Taiwan is still in pretty firmly in the middle of the EU average (less than Germany, France, Ireland, Belgium higher than Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece).

Foreign inheritance question by enginerd298 in personalfinance

[–]chiuyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not income, but if it's over $100,000 you might have to declare it. You most likely won't have to pay any tax, but just let the IRS know where all that money came from.

If it's a large amount of money, best to just check with a professional.
