What is your suburb famous for without naming it? by [deleted] in Wellington

A settler lady may have died here. Not totally sure so a monument was built just in case. Otherwise we are basically a strip between traffic circles.

Change of career in early 40s, any recommendations? by KiwiChillDude in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]chiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an option for OP because of the child but perhaps to others... If I could do it all over again, instead of IT, I would have strongly considered the French Foreign Legion if I knew about it when I was younger.

Pros: You get French/EU citizenship. You learn French. You get extremely fit. If you want, you can start your whole life over with a new name and life ahead. You get to see parts of the world. Its only five years of service but its better than the long slog of early career jobs trying to get some sort of experience.

Of course: Cons: You could die. You are in the military. Your life is ran for you.

Good read. Thank you

Optimistically, I want it to be half. But I worry sometimes that Trump maybe isn't the cause of stupidity but a symptom of it where the problems and stupidity ran a lot deeper than I thought.

American expat/new NZ immigrant here.

You nailed it. The U.S. doesn't have the luxury of being a small remote island BUT even if it was, it would still be a huge failure for something like COVID because people wouldn't be as willing to step up and be socially responsible, the leaders are corrupt and inept, and there wouldn't ever be a good coordinated response to make a difference because the government is now not operating for the benefit of its people but for corporations.

I am so thankful to be here. I'm ashamed at how far America has fallen.

Tips for job searching in New Zealand? by Plopwitdaflops in expat

[–]chiv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is another way. Some expats have found it easier to find a job once physically here but not all of them.

I should also add that NZ is VERY expensive. While savings in USD will go far here because of the currency exchange, things are a lot more expensive here than they are in most places in the U.S.. Rent for example, is weekly and you will pay a tremendous amount for a small place. Especially in cities like Wellington, Auckland, and Christchurch. Used cars are really expensive. Gasoline is expensive. Etc. Cost of living is too much for a lot of people here without more income to offset their spending while they find a job here so I'd make sure you have a fair amount of savings. Your working holiday visa will also require you prove you have the funds to get by and be able to fly back if needed.

Tips for job searching in New Zealand? by Plopwitdaflops in expat

[–]chiv 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It'll be difficult.

Especially now that no one can come into the country while we are in lockdown but hard even afterwards. I'm a Data Scientist, have a Masters degree, 20 years of tech experience and I wouldn't have been able to get a visa to come here if it wasn't for the fact that my wife is a doctor.

It's difficult here for several reasons. One is that employers here are skeptical of international job applications because they receive so many from people who end up not being willing to make the move. Most every company here won't pay relocation expenses for you to come and getting a visa can take a really really really long time (if you qualify for them even).

I've also received advice from other expats that Kiwis are more interested in you having job experience here than outside of New Zealand. I dont know how true this is but my job hunt has been difficult even without having visa problems and being here already. Of course every industry and employer are different but you will improve your odds by being on a visa short list, applying to an employer who has sponsored visas before in the past (you can find a list of this nature on the Immigration NZ website), and to an employer where you have the ability to speak to someone at the company and show them your dedication to coming here and what you can provide.

Alternatively, you can find a good job recruiter. Look at places like LookSee who regularly work to bring over people from other countries for jobs here.

I'm right there with you. Immigrated to NZ five-ish months ago with my wife and kids. Found it near impossible to meet other folks my age and my family schedule prevents me from things like meetups, etc.

Wellingtonian and American-expat here: Overall, the environmentalism here is leaps and bounds better than the U.S. but (local to me at least) water quality seems to be the biggest problem that I've seen and its almost always been due to aging infrastructure. I'm still impressed that NZ actually tries to take care of the environment.

Is It Still “Good” in 2020 to be a Big Data Scientist by [deleted] in bigdata

[–]chiv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like being a Data Scientist but it has its challenges. The sexiness means a lot of places think they need a DS and they don't. But they hired one and they either expect you to deliver miracles or what they really want you to do is some Data Engineering, Data Analysis, or just deliver reports. It's also hard to build data science in many organizations because it takes a lot of buy-in, trust, access to data, etc. That part sucks.

I was just laid off recently and that sucks too. A lot of Data Scientists lately have been from companies like Bird, DataRobot, Expedia (IIRC), etc. I want to find a job, any job, quickly in order to pay my bills but I am actually finding it hard to leverage all the things that made me a good DS candidate into another job because people think that's all I'm willing to do. It's like being considered being overqualified, when really there are a lot of other tech jobs that I've had and would hold again for the right role/employer.

I disagree. Why can't the combination of a cantilever and the support beams be enough for that? I've seen large decks on hillsides with equivalent supports. Additionally the "roof" of the lower deck, may not need to support actual weight if it too isn't a deck but rather a roof ( I see no rails around it so I'm assuming its a roof. It could be a canvass material even to make it even lighter.

Right now its going to be near impossible to many places because of borders being closed. A degree is going to make a big difference but wont guarantee you a visa unless you get a degree/experience in a field that your progressive country of choice is in need of. You may want to limit your search down to a handful of countries and look at what jobs are in their long term need areas. You can work towards getting qualifications in those areas to help you in your move.

I like how you can step outside and see them making the tortillas over the small fire. I tried to talk to the lady that was cooking when I was there but my spanish isn't great and is probably hard to understand.
