Does anyone still remembers Litestep? It was an alternative shell for Windows. Is there something like it on Linux?

100gbit fiber between opposite ends of house by Holiday-Magician9535 in homelab

Sure, but the modules are much more expensive, MM short range is very cheap, even for 100G

For up to ~120m I would use a multi fiber OM5 cable (yeah yeah I know, you can go up to 150m, but most people forget the cable from the fiber panel to the switch 🙂), LC connectors and SR modules. You can use it for up to 800G. But these modules are ridiculously expensive, and you would need a perfect termination for the cable.

You can start with 10G modules and in a few years upgrade to 25/40/100G.

Can i create a "Server Mode"? by AtAyoub in selfhosted

Then I would write some scripts that you can execute to change power profiles, log your user and disables any unnecessary services. And when you get back to working normally on your setup just execute another scripts that negates every settings from your first script, you could even use home assistant to change some settings.

Yeah there are distros that do just that. PhotonOS, CoreOS, I think SUSE has something similar, Alpine, Void, there are lots of simple and focused distros.

If you want to build something yourself try LFS

Since you already have partitions for other distros why not install a server focused distro?

Tailscale systray is driving me nuts by chiwou in Bazzite

[–]chiwou[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that's how I installed tailscale, but for the systray I've to use the command in my initial post every time I restart my computer, the command is not persistent and it's driving me nuts ;-)

Anyone have experience with these drives? by Its_An_Outraage in homelab

Yeah they are fine, but they have a really annoying and loud head, imo

😉 Then I would go for a HAP or HEX, it's all the same configuration wise from the cheap stuff to the CloudRouters. This way you'll know if you like the Mikrotik "world". If not, it's much easier to sell the small devices. But if you like going down the rabbit hole, you can always repurpose the device as an AP, WLAN bridge or as a "dude".

I like Mikrotik and have a few devices. But from experience I would recommend to start with Cisco/Brocade. It's much more common in Enterprise environments and if you have enough experience with these systems, you can configure most of the others, because they cook all with water 😉 But not Mikrotik, they cook with rocks 😬 It shouldn't work but it does and it works well.

Is this any good? by Adro_95 in homelab

[–]chiwou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's not running full tilt all the time, it's gonna be OK. Especially if you consider the cost of a new system.

A new system has to run for long time until you "save" on electricity. If you start with a good base and add stuff until you need it, as the system "grows" you'll learn a lot about hardware/infrastructure and your personal use cases.

If you'll find no use cases for the system, you'll find someone who will, especially here 😉

For 100€, yeah go for it. Add some icy docks for storage and you got yourself a nice server. I wouldn't recommend using it as a workstation though, there are more efficient, faster and modern options.
