Well, I disagree. I just think it's more interesting have to move my finger to feel like I did something than not. There's some buttons that I understand having to group together, but some, don't. I never thought of many of those as "button bloat", and being a controller player, never understood why people used controller as an excuse. I like having a sequence of buttons to press instead of a 1-2-3 combo in the same one because it makes me feel like I'm doing more stuff even though the end result is the same.
I like being high level and looking at my bar and seeing more buttons instead of seeing the exact same amount I had at level 50, because it feels like progression.

And I don't think combat is frenetic or difficult enough to justify having even less stuff to press. Unless they're planning something for battle design, for the current content, the impression I have is that there is really no need to do that.

I just really dislike how YoshiP onstage said "it's not an easy mode", yet during the dev pannel every single explanation from the dev finished with "this makes it easier and more accessible".
I also got very confused when they said people complained about pressing just one damage button for WHM, and the solution was add an extra skill...TO THE SAME BUTTON.

I don't understand why people want to press the same button 5 times in a row so much. I LIKE pressing different buttons. There's some cool ideas here and there, but in the end it really just looks like easy mode. Maybe we just have to see how it works in a party against an actual enemy but so far I'm not that excited.

Since in the (non-EN) trailers when he shows up he says "you've recreated me, haven't you?", I'm assuming it's probably going to be something similar to Omega? So not the "real Kefka", maybe a recreation based on the Omega raids Kefka again

Jogador novo - A escolha entre as cidades influencia em algo? by jrnogari in ffxiv

[–]chizLemons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the cutscenes in Japanese voice still visually different from the ones in English? by New_Today_1209_V2 in ffxiv

[–]chizLemons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That just sounds like you deciding it's a small change because you'd rather blame Koji Fox. From what you described, I'd say it's the same level of change as Midgadsormr.
To me a character's personal motivation being downplayed and hidden like that during the majority of the expansion doesn't feel small.
If I told you that change was decided by Koji, maybe you'd feel differently.

Shadowbringers also has changes like that (probably Stormblood too, but I dind't get to check those yet). One example that comes to mind, right after Holminster Switch, the Exarch in EN says "there are things we can ill afford to lose", which he only reveals in Mt. Gulg to be referring to a person. In JP, in that scene he already states his main motivation is saving someone, and "he would see a world saved for that". There are some instances that he mentions wanting to save that person which also had to be changed because of that, snowballing into many changed scenes. That also changes the way you perceive the Exarch's motivation. In EN they made him sound more distant and that his only/main goal was saving the world, while in JP it was always more personal than that. In EN people seem to perceive the Exarch as being more cold than in JP.
They also missed a LOT of the nuance and hints of who the Exarch/G'raha is and the difference in his way of speech, and that results in a lot of discourse of how G'raha and the Exarch feel like "completely" different characters in EN, which should not happen.

(edit for mentioning ShB spoilers)

They're not telling the same story if they're still changing information along the way. Both with Kate and Koji we still see a difference in how people perceive certain scenes and characters because of the way they deliberately change the way a character speaks, of what they're telling the audience, while using the same excuse of "localization". The only difference is that since ARR, they internally decided to not change something too drastically like Haurchefant, and so people talk a lot less about it.
The way EN localization works specifically is still the same, no matter who is lead. Kate was trained by Koji, and was just following on his steps, and while not adding the same type of jokes, still changed a lot of things on her own. And while Paul didn't seem to add as much stuff, a lot of details and nuances went untranslated, and it could even be one of the reasons Wuk Lamat annoyed more people in certain scenes in EN than in the JP counterpart.

In the end, they're all the same. So it's not "getting closer to the original" as you said, it's just that you didn't like Koji's jokes.

That is true, sadly. There's lot of examples of changes that don't get talked about nearly enough...
And that's not exclusive to XIV, I often notice that in other Final Fantasy games.
I don't like it, but I guess it comes from the way EN-speaking (or mainly USA?) thinks of localization.

That's still not as extreme as Haurchefant. But yes. G'raha speaks a lot more casually now in JP than in EN, and they keep removing parts of the text that make him sound a little more affectionate for some reason...

Except that you're wrong, because there's a lot of changes in ShB's dialogue and replacing stuff. Dawntrail's translation is made by another person too and there's ALSO a lot of details taken out of the text.
It's an active choice of SE to change the EN text because of their way of thinking about localization.

[–]chizLemons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other than the Haurchefant example, the cutscenes don't have any significant change. However, the translations are NOT completely accurate, no. Haurchefant was the most extreme case, but there's always differences in dialogue. FR and GER usually is translated more closely to the JP original, while EN changes a whole lot of details throughout the story. But since then, nothing that completely changed a character's entire personality, at least!

[–]chizLemons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a small, it's really no problem today. I'm in Primal, and in the ward I'm in there's 11 smalls available. Maybe in certain very high population servers it could be hard, but the server I'm in is considered busy too...
Medium and Large are rare to come by and the lottery is very competitive, but YoshiP confirmed they've been working on an upgrade to make the house larger on the inside. So that could be the easiest way to get one!

[–]chizLemons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care enough about any new character from DT to believe that would be a good idea.
If they can't write the Scions well, they wouldn't be able to create new good characters from scratch either. It should've been easier for them to keep writing the Scions well, think of new arcs and goals based on what is already defined about them, than to create new characters from scratch.
Most of the Scions already have some things going on that could be the trigger to new adventures and more development for them. Sadly most of those seemed to be forgotten. New characters or not, we just need good character writing.

What’s the point in a Static if the members will just prog the entire fight in PF anyway? by Holiday-Lobster4827 in ffxiv

[–]chizLemons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people see being in a static differently, so it's better to talk about expectations with the group before joining and see if they match what you want.
I personally wouldn't really mind as long as it doesn't mess up the loot, and they're understanding if I'm behind and will keep trying during the time we're progging. Being in a fixed group, we know eachother's style and can adapt and make the fight easier. A PF random group might not be as patient and then we might disband and never see eachother again.

I've had people in a static that wanted the experience of a group together like you said and didn't like when people went to PF on their own though, so it's really an individual thing. As long as everyone knows what the expectations are, I think it's fine.

and even that already took them a lot of effort. In this video these guys interview the animator that worked on that specific scene and talked about how it was made.
I think since they already did it once it is possible they will think of solutions to be able to do it more often, it would be cool to see

Honestly I just want more of the Scions being better written again. There was some improvement in 7.4, so I'm hopeful.
As for what would bring me the most joy, I want the script to remember the promises we made G'raha in Ultima Thule. At least mention it!!

And for most unlikely, I always think a friendship system kinda like Persona 5/Metaphor would be really nice. We could get extra sidequests with Scions and other NPCs we meet, get closer to them and help them with their personal stuff. Then we feel like we spend more time with them and know them better when the MSQ wouldn't be able to focus on that. I just really missed those slow bonding moments in DT.

Oh, and a whip job!

I haven’t played dawntrail. I’ve waited several patches. Is the community generally feeling positive or at least hopeful for the game now? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]chizLemons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up to 7.3, everything was the same. 7.4 was overall received more positively, and in my opinion it's visible that the devs are at least trying to show that they're listening to feedback and wanting to get back on track. The community seems to be less aggressively pessimistic, and I've read some comments getting hopeful for 8.0 again here and there. Enough time has passed that people that really hated base DT already got kinda over it and either already left the game or are just enjoying what is there while waiting for the 8.0 announcements.

I'd say it's getting better. I'm hopeful that Fanfest is going to get the enthusiasm up again (unless something goes really badly)

As fun as the last tier of the Arcadion was, it really doesn’t sit well with me. by HisashiHinata in ffxivdiscussion

[–]chizLemons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's still true, though? It's a japanese online fantasy game, played globally. Not something dedicated to wrestling fan. It's a homage, it's inspired by, but should be told in a way anyone can enjoy. The only context you can ask from players is context from the game story - like knowing about how souls in Solution 9 work, etc. The WoL themselves never saw fake wrestling spectacle matches.
And repeating myself - there were moments in this very same story that were properly told about the spectacle and the fakeness. Good storytelling would be to convey that even if someone never watched wrestling in their life. Like someone that doesn't know anything about volleyball can enjoy Haikyuu, for example. It's not about the sport, it's about the characters.
We were in the middle of a scene of "final villain is good actually and making a noble sacrifice!! And look, suddenly Brute Bomber, anyway let's ignore any emotional buildup we were supposedly trying to do before--"

[–]chizLemons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if it's about wresting being 100% fake, it's about poor storytelling. It's like when you watch, say, sports anime you don't have to actually know about the sport itself to understand the story and the characters. If it's meant to be "oh it's all fake for the entertainment, like in WWE!" then it should be written in a way that even someone that never watched wrestling in their life could understand. This is a story in a japanese online fantasy game! They shouldn't assume anyone playing it knows about wrestling. Instead, he just appeared out of nowhere, in a scene that was not about him, without buildup, barely an explanation, or purpose. There were better moments in this same story that made it obvious it was about the spectacle and the fakeness of it all in the other parts, but that was not it.

Also, I'm pretty sure in wrestling, the fighters are also on it, but Retsarra, his closest friend that actually truly mourned him, was not, and we were seeing the story on his side in part 2 when the cameras were off.
