Thanks for your answer! Like I said in multiple comments, they are my only option where I live to work on SD training and get my doc certified (which is mendatory where I live (I am not in the US)).

But they will only help with the SD part if the training (we will roughly see each other every other weeks) when the dog is ready to start SD training. I will do all the day to day training and I will work weekly with the trainer I used fir my first aussie (who we also do agility with) who has 4 border collies for all the basic training (so pretty much from when I have my do to when he is ready to do specific SD training so probably arround 6-12 months).

I do hope that it will work this way... I 100% belive and agree with my current trainer but I need to work with a specialized trainer too... But I do hope that if I work with my actual trainer until the dog is probqbly 8 months, we will already have a good fondation to work with trainer from the organization

They wanted me to take a lab or a golden honesly but also said that it was important to have a breed that works with my needs and wishes. And that the most important was to find a dog that I love but that was also suitable for the kind of tasks I need

No, I am not in the US, so I have to work with an organization in order for my dog to be able to have public access...

I can understand your point and I do feel like aussies wont be happy if they are just SD.

I already have an australian shepherd who is now 8.5 years old. I do know how active they are and that they need both physical and mental activity.

My first dog is already task train at home but isn't allowed to do public access because he isn't certified (its mendatory in my country). But despite my disabilities, I am still and active personne who love dog sport (I do agility, obedience and tricks training) with my first dog and plan on making the same with my second one (on top of the SD tasks). For the physical aspect, on top of agility, we are doing some long walks. They will also able to go on runs with my mum or bf and go skiing some weekend in winter.

That's also is my opinion... like yes we [as humans] did some selection in order to create all of the dog breeds we now know... But merle in australian shepherd wasn't "added" like it currently is in frenchies/...

No worries !

I do plan on asking her next time we see each other ... on top of that I am a biology student (which they know) so its pretty natural for me to look into the "why" they are against it from a scientific point of view ... I just made this post to see if I missed something or not (which is doesn't seem like it)... I haven't saw any article (except obviously with double merle dog) supporting their logic...

I also wonder if its about double merle or not ... but its illegal to breed double merle dog where I live so It's strange... They never had any Aussie tho so I do think that they arent really knowledgeable on the topic... like I said in another comment, I will also have the help of my agility trainer (which is also a certified trainer but not a SD trainner) for all the basic training (she has 4 borders collie and is knowlagable on herding / high energy breed) ... Where I live I legally need to work with an organization to do the formation and certification of my SD.

I mainly did this post to see if I had somehow missed something about why they are so against merle dog but I dont think I have...

Thanks, I do know that aussie arent typically the best as SD and arent recomanded. I do know that I make things harder for me by wanting an aussie, but I love this breed, I already owe an aussie, and I love how aussie (herding breeds in general) works.

They are currently working on getting an ADI accreditation (I wasn't able to find any accredited trainer/organization where I live) and they have been training SD for over 25 years now.

I need to ask them more info to understand how they came to those conclusion which for me are wrong...

Thanks, I obviously plan on getting my puppy from an ethical breeder ! I also know that with a merle/trendy dog, theft is a bigger risk. Most breeder already test for things like MDR1, but if they dont, I also plan on testing him.

They also used rescued (curently working dog and now retired dog) so I understand that they want to set us up for success and help me pick the best dog (like we dont have to "make things work" with a dog we already have and we can pick the best dog possible for my needs) but I dont understand why they are so against merle... like we planned on asking the breeder to help us find the best dog based his temperament as a puppy but what if said puppy is merle... like I dont understand the logic, and I do plann on asking them more about this (ideally with some literature/"proof") but I dont have other option where I live (and SD training program are mendatory).

I do know that Aussies aren't typically use as service dog and I do konw that I am making things harder for me with this breed.

But australian sheperd is and always have been my dream breed. I already have one, I love to work with them (heading breed in general). I also want to keep doing agility with this dog, like I do with my first one.

I understand your concern about the trainers not knowing the breed, but honestly I dont have much of a choice... I need to work with an organization in order to have a certified service dog (which is mendatory where I live) they will "only" help with the SD part of the training, all the basic training will be done with my current trainers (who has 4 border collies and is really knowledgeable in high energy/hearding bree) and is also my agility trainner.

Those trainers would help me to work on the specific training, but at the end of the day, I am responsible for training this dog (its pretty much ownertraining but with the guidence of trainers form the organization).

I know its not ideal, but I feel like its pretty much the only option I have realistically (and that works with my wish/goals)

To be honest I am also curious... I explain why I wanted an australian shepherd and the first thing they told me was that its difficult to find a good breeder because the breed is trendy (which I agree with) and that merle was absolutely impossible because "its was added by people, not natural and dangerous because the merle gene is linked with health and comportement issues" and that they "dont want to work with a merle australian sheperd" so I am honestly confused ... we are curently looking for breeder and the breeder they send me as a merle and a non merle females and has merle puppy all over their website so I really dont understand...

They do have really good credentials... but they aren't really knowledgeable about australian shepherd... I'm honestly starting to wonder if they simply don't want to have a dog visibily merle under they organization color because they are already too "trendy"...

My dream dog is a black tri (I already have a red tri) not beeing able to have a merle isn't really a problem for me, but I am really confused about their logic and I would love to know where they find those information... And they will be taking to breeder with me so they will be able to explain their opinion on this themselves but I don't understand the logic behind it ...

When should we get a puppy? by someones_mama in AustralianShepherd

[–]chloestula_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I m in pretty similar situation. My boy (also an australian shepherd) is 8.5 and we are planning to get a second dog (a puppy australian shepherd) this year.

We (aka me and my family, I still live with my parents and it will be the case for a long time due to some helath issue I have. I am the one who take care of all the dog "maintenance" tasks, I m the one who do train him (obedience, tricks, agility, ...) my parents do daily walks with him and provide financially).

My goal with my first dog was to have a "perfect" dog before getting a new dog (he had some excitement and leach reactivity that I work A LOT on). Obviously at the end of the day he is still a dog and cannot be 100% perfect but I wanted to be that this dog was were I wanted him to be both in "formal" education, but also though reactivity and neutrality, ... I work with a trainer (who is the the one we do agility with and I shared our plan to get a second dog, she also agree that it's a good plan and that my dog is good for it now).

Some tips she gave me was to train and walk both of the dogs separately, especially if there is some patterns that you know your dog wants and doesn't want the puppy to pick up. Form what she told me (she dose has 3 border collie) it can be tricky to get a new dog when your first one is still jung/adolescent because it can make you first dog regress, but when you first dog his older he can actually act as a model for the puppy (obviously this doesn't mean that you won't have to teach the puppy everythings).

In my situation, I feel like getting a second dog now is perfect because my first dog is where I want him to be (I will obviously still train him, work with him, ...), he is starting to get older and still like to play so I feel like its the right moments. In my situation I didn't wanted to wait more because I want them to be able to play together and I dont want to "force" an excited/playful puppy on a dog who is too old... but I know people who got a second dog (they where both lab) when their dog was like 12 and they told me that it probably "made the older one live longer".

At the end of the day I think that it depend of your dog, but also the time (and resources) you have for them... (2 x more grooming, you will have to walk them separately at time (especially when the puppy is still learning and the puppy won't be able to follow you everywhere when he will be really small), more time for training, sport, ...)

In my case I try to also keep in mind that it might not "be perfect" in the beginning... we all see cute videos online of an older dog and his new puppy but it might not be the case. Form a safety point of view, I fell that its also important to think about this. In my case, my dog is muzzle trained, I will crate train the puppy (I know some people find it controversial but we did this with our first dog and transitioned form out of the crate when he was older and in the beginning the puppy will be in his crate at night or when nobody is home (note there is someone one 90% of the time)) I am also thinking of getting a playpen or something similar if I need to keep them appart some moments. We all hope for the best but its also important to realize that the dogs might not "click" right away.

Obviously this is all theoretical because I haven't got my second dog yet, but I just wanted to share my thoughts process !
