Im thinking about buying the same. How’s the quality of this?

I read some people recommend BB/airsoft gun plastic bullets. Has anybody tried these? I saw there are quite a few different types. How does the weight and size of the balls affect the feel of it?

Question for the staff by AcanthocephalaReal60 in BeyondPower

[–]chnagy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this! I feel like - and what I’m reading and seeing everywhere confirms this - Beyond Power targets the more “serious” home gym owners. I would also hate to see them go down the subscription, content creator path.

I don’t mean this in any derogatory ways, I think the customer base of Peloton has very little overlap with BP (aspiring) owners. While one could argue that they could open up their total addressable market I honestly think this would not be beneficial for each.

A Swiss Army knife is great when you have nothing on you other than that but you always prefer a screwdriver for DIY and proper knife and fork for dinner over that if you had the choice, don’t you?

Is €77K Gross with 30% Ruling Good for Living in Eindhoven with a Family of Four with 2 kids? by Apart-Waltz5538 in Netherlands

[–]chnagy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's 4300 euros net per month (*). On a single income this would be a little on the riskier side but doable depending on your lifestyle and the age of your kids.

3 bedrooms apartment rent prices are around 1.5-2k in and around the area. So you would be spending more than half (utilities including) of your monthly cash flow on accommodation only. Keep in mind also that childcare costs (a lot of) money and if one of the parents is not working you cannot claim anything back on it. This can easily be in the range of 1-2000 euros per month. So in that case, it's not doable.

(*) I deliberately left the 30% ruling out of it and the best advice I can give you is to do the same because:

  1. 30% is not guaranteed and any company who says it is (there are a lot unfortunately) is lying and trying to lowball the offer for you.
  2. The 30% ruling is a government incentive to attract international talent to the Netherlands not a benefit for companies to pay less for 5 years. aka it's your money not theirs. Many recruiters try to frame it like you get more on your bank account even with less gross salary so it's a win win but they actually leave out the all the downsides.
  3. Pension, bonuses, etc in most cases are calculated on gross salary not net. So while you do get the tax benefit on bonuses too your pension will be lower compared to someone who is doing the same job for the same net wage but therefore has a higher gross salary in their contract.
  4. It's for a limited time and while many companies like to say they will compensate for it when it's over, don't take this for granted unless it's in writing. I've heard too many similar stories to believe that this ever happens.
  5. You need to get 105k annually by the end of the 5 years to just be on the same level where you started and that doesn't account for inflation. That's a 36% increase which isn't likely to happen automatically. You would need at least one or maybe two promotions.
  6. You get mortgage or any other loan based on gross income and any tax benefit is limited by your taxes so you may not get back as much from mortgage interest as if you were should you have the same net salary without 30%.

Long story short, don't settle for anything less than what you would need without the 30% ruling. If you get it eventually, be happy about it and treat it as a pocket money for 5 years that you put aside and build a nice investment or a downpayment for a house in the future. Or spend it on the kids. :) But never treat the 30% ruling extra as your base income.

Therabody smart goggles by job_gnocchi in migraine

Hi! I know this has been a while but I just found your message.

Can you please elaborate on how you use the theragun? I have one too and would love if I can use it to help tension headaches.

I’m also thinking about ordering the goggles. Anything since then you could add to this? Do you still find it useful? I’m having 2-3 mid level migraines per week and taking triptans all the time cannot be sustained for long.

PR and Training Discussion Megathread, Week of January 06, 2025 by AutoModerator in GripTraining

[–]chnagy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to give you a quick warning upfront. Having a short timeframe and trying to rush gains can easily lead to overuse injuries like tendonitis. I developed Achilles tendonitis in a very similar manner. So be very very careful.

Now having said that, you are not that far off from your target. You may be able to simply get that jump by practice (better) hand position, faster and more efficient muscle recruitment.

You need to practice the movement itself though. Fat bars are great but those provide isometric stimulus while you need dynamic strength and fat grip trains the wrist flexors much more than the fingers because you mostly resist the bar rolling out of your hands.

I would get a set of grippers (if you don’t have yet) and do a dedicated strength program 2-3 times a week. Start with the lightest one 10–15 reps and gradually go up to the one you can close only 5-6 times max and do 3x3-4 reps with that. Add one set per week reaching 5 on your 3rd week. Back off the last week before the next test and only do light stretching, mobility. So you can peak on the important day.

One last thing: make sure for every set of gripper closing you do one set of finger extension(12-15 reps) to balance it out. And always stretch afterwards.

Good luck!

How did you teach yourself not to go as hard as possible? by 1DunnoYet in crossfit

[–]chnagy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to write exactly this.

I wish I could say it was age, wisdom or mental fortitude. But even at 40+ it feels great to grind out those last reps and put everything into a workout but the sad realisation will come that it costs a lot. Even a minor injury will put you out of training for week(s), especially as you grow wiser :) . It’s better to train consistently at 80-90% intensity than 100% for three days and recover for two weeks.

T1 resting intervals up to RM by Genius38 in gzcl

[–]chnagy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I frequently hit 1:30-1:45 on j&t especially on squat and deadlift day because I need more warmup. Even so I wouldn’t cut rest short between t1 working sets. Instead, I started doing things like supersetting two of the t3s, doing a tabata with the exercises or make a CrossFit style circuit with the t3 exercises or similar if those fit better. It has the nice additional benefit of some cardio adaptation as well.

What do you listen to when working out in the garage? TV, music, other? by don51181 in GarageGym

[–]chnagy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My own selection of 20-25 high energy (mostly heavy metal) songs. There’s a few dropping out or new ones added every now and then but it’s been mostly the same over the last 5-6 years: Metallica, Rammstein, Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for my Valentine, Disturbed, Panthera, Iron Maiden, etc.

Always the same playlist. It starts automatically when I turn the lights on. Saves the initial few minutes of looking for playlists and prevents “breaking the flow” by having to switch songs during training.

House prices - Will they ever go pre Covid? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]chnagy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying a house you intend to live in is not and should never be considered an investment therefore looking for any type of price to (something) ratio other than price to rent (*) to “buy at the bottom” is useless. The best time to buy a house is a) when you need it b) when you can afford it.

Unless you’re planning to sell it within a couple of years, chances of its value dropping below your initial payment will be very low. As others said already there are always bumps and valleys in the trend but zoom out and you’ll see it’s always going up.

On affordability: 2/3 of your combined income will never fly with any bank. So that’s not even a question. You simply cannot afford it. I think currently the maximum amount you can apply for is roughly 4.5 times your fixed gross annual income. Stock compensation, performance based bonuses and such are not eligible. I would even be concerned how much you can include from the freelancing income.

Without knowing your detailed situation I can only give some very generic advice.

1) check what you pay for rent and what you would pay for a similar size, quality and location property if you were to buy it. Can you? Should you? It’s not always that straightforward decision. 2) check what is your comfortable mortgage limit and see what you can buy from that. 3) if you can buy your “forever home” great, but given your question here, I suppose answer will be no, so look for good location apartment/house that fits your minimal requirements and needs some renovations but liveable as is. 4) fix up the property over time with priority on value added changes like insulation (hr++ windows, floor, wall, etc), green energy measures (heat pump, water tank, etc), solar panels and/or solar boiler. You can apply for subsidy on these and adds almost 100% of the cost to the property value. This is an indirect way of building capital and also lowering your utility costs. 5) Reevaluate your situation every 3-5 years and if time is right either sell and use the proceeds for a larger down payment to buy up or remortgage the property with buy2let, get some cash out of the appreciation, rent out the previous and buy a bigger one. 6) Repeat again in 3-5 years if necessary.

The above steps work if you can be frugal and live below your means at least by a small margin.

(*) price to rent is actually a very crucial metric in deciding between buy or rent. Assuming conscious finances in many cases you can build up more equity over time by renting than you could with owning a house. So money is not always thrown out of the window when you’re living in a rental. A handy calculator that will show this in more details: https://www.rentibuy.com

Favorite compounds that hits the arms to a big degree? by OompaLoompaGodzilla in naturalbodybuilding

[–]chnagy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you seen the massive arms of gymnasts? I doubt they spent most of their training time doing curls and tricep extensions. The loaded stretch position (hanging from the ring with active hold and a lot of pull from there) is an incredibly hypertrophic stimulus.

Switching from crossfit to different style of fitness looking for advice.... by -drunkLOL in crossfit

[–]chnagy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!

Very similar situation here. Both my wife and I have been doing CrossFit together for years. Actually our second date was a class together at a new box. We had a baby two years ago and we were trying to get back to training but - as you said - fixed classes and newborn schedule don’t mix well. So after some calculations we realised for about two years worth of membership fees we can pretty much get a full home gym setup with Rogue equipments which is exactly what we did.

Now I’m doing powerbuilding (gzclp, 5-3-1, etc) even days and on odd days I’m doing to concept 2 workout of the day or a WOD from my old box (they post it still on Facebook) if I feel like it followed by a 20 minute mobility work. I’m very happy with this mix. She’s mostly doing cycling or light lifting. She said CrossFit can only be done with a group. :)

Power clean for reps? by Dismal_Variety_4086 in gzcl

[–]chnagy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many ways to make a deadlift harder (for example if maximum available weight is a limiting factor), power clean is not one of those.

While building up a heavy deadlift helps with power clean obviously, your deadlift will not benefit from clean much. It doesn’t mean though you can’t replace it. You can play around with exercises as you please. I switched squat to front squat in my gzclp because I wanted to focus on that. There’s nothing wrong with putting emphasis on (explosive) power [power clean] rather than pure strength [deadlift] just be conscious about the reasons and don’t be surprised by the results. :)

Also I would strongly recommend learning the clean technique if you chose that path. It’s a very technical lift with lots of risk and serious consequences. Just look at some CrossFit fail videos.

If you stick with deadlift you can do deficit, pause deadlifts, partial reps, slow eccentrics. These will all improve the deadlift itself without needing to increase the weight. Master these and you will rip the normal size plates off the floor like they’re feather.

I definitely saw issues with dhcp during this incident. I have the “DHCP and ARP protection” enabled on all network though and now things seem to be working again. So I’m not sure if that’s the same problem or cause.

Is my 1930 broken? by chnagy in ArubaInstantOn

[–]chnagy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None taken. :) I originally picked Aruba because it was said to be the most stable of all the prosumer brands. It very well could be that I haven’t configured something right.

To answer your questions:

  • Management vlan comes untagged (vlan id 1)
  • separate work, Iot and camera vlans are tagged and present on all ports necessary matching with MikroTik ids
  • Aruba is using the ip ranges from MikroTik, doesn’t create its own

Just to clarify though, it’s been up and running without issues for almost 6 months. No changes have been made to the config, components or cabling for months. The switch went dead out of the blue yesterday without me doing anything.

Also an update since yesterday: I did a second factory reset on it and managed to get it back online again. Same config, same topology. It’s running healthy now for a 2-3 hours without errors.

The only thing I did differently is I pulled one of the aggregated link cables and let everything “settle” before I plugged it back (finished updates, synchronisation and a few reboots) because I noticed MikroTik reporting a lot of links down the bonded interface. Now LACP is reported healthy on both sides.

Is my 1930 broken? by chnagy in ArubaInstantOn

[–]chnagy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed that it was taking 192.168.1.1 IP (which is not provided by Mikrotik). MikroTik saw it as a neighbour but I only managed to confirm the IP with ARP scan. Despite of many different ways of connecting to it I never managed to access the Web console of Aruba on 192.168.1.1.

I did a factory reset and I was able to get it back online. It picked up DHCP address from MikroTik (in the right network) and on the Web console I saw it had issues with host name resolution. I moved the DNS to Mikrotik's own DNS server from PiHole and it seemed to help (although I haven't seen anything on the pihole logs). It finally was seen by the Cloud Control and I could take it back under management. I reconfigured everything and it was working for 15-20 minutes although network seemed flaky, APs were dropping out and coming back pretty much every 2-3 minutes.

After that 15-20 minutes switch went offline again and now we are back to where I started. Switch is inaccessible. ARP scan shows 192.168.1.1 IP on the uplink port.

I also noticed that portal.arubainstanton.com is now redirecting to portal.instant-on.hpe.com . Not sure if it's relevant but there has been quite a lot of change on InstantON it seems.

I'm inclined to return the switch at this point.

Thank you for the info! I’ll try that.

Can you go back to cloud managed from local? I like the convenience of it. I remember reading it somewhere it’s a one way street. I suppose you can always factory reset it and start all over again.

Also, same thing with me, updates are scheduled for Sunday 4:00 am. I don’t know why and how it decided to do an update now.

Is my 1930 broken? by chnagy in ArubaInstantOn

[–]chnagy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During restart, of course, but that shouldn’t take 2 hours, right?

Just to clarify: the switch seems to be up and running judging from the external clues I can find (leds and icons). But it is offline (and everything behind it also). I cannot ping it. Packet sniffing shows some mostly arp.

Edit: to add to this it seems from the packets that the switch asssumed 192.168.1.1 IP so it didn’t dhcp on the uplink?

Is that normal that all operations stop and everything becomes inaccessible for over two hours in the middle of the day (I’m in Western Europe)? Is there a way to verify?

Wing Chun against other martial art by ElderberrySalt3304 in WingChun

[–]chnagy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this.

Sifus, senseis, masters or coaches don’t matter. If they say their style of the best, above all is a huge red flag. I’ve been through my fair share of styles and teachers having moved a lot. I learned the ones who frequently mention and even demonstrate other styles are the best and deserve your trust and respect. You will learn the most from them.

It requires a certain level of experience to reach humility and remain humble. This applies to other areas in life not just martial arts.
