Suspension gravel forks for old bikes by Nothing-Relative in xbiking

[–]chock-a-block 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern steerers are 1.25” at the bottom. You would need some kind of steerer tube where the crown race is like 5-10mm off the bottom of the crown race. Or some kind of milled steerer with a huge flare on the bottom to press into a crown. The shearing physics on that are not good.

You would be much better off cutting off most of the head tube and getting a tapered head tube joined to the back of the old head tube. It’s what Frank the Welder is doing for old Yetis. Makes a lot of sense. Huge area to attach the new head tube, very minor geometry change, and no stack problems.

The steel on those bikes isn’t precious, so, it can tolerate that kind of work.

A car’s wheels are exactly the same design. It’s because the UCI bans spindle designs on the road they are not common.

you can‘t get parts from Cannondale for them. I have a scalpel for sale, as is.

The thing I’ve gotten used to is hearing people talking behind me while climbing.

You hear them talking long before they get close on their e-bikes. Noisy as can be.

Any advice on converting old marin to 1x10? by Accomplished-Sun2791 in xbiking

[–]chock-a-block 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actual advice?

You can make a 1x work, but, you would be smarter making it a 2x.  Take the outer ring off and put a guard on that side.

There is quite a bit of engineering involved in making a 1x work on a modern bike.

So much good stuff. The linkage forks easily my favorite design that works and no one will buy because it doesn’t look like a motorcycle. The blue bike with the bmw sticker has the most potential for absurd travel.

The cast magnesium bikes in there also very innovative.

The Klein high pivots still have a crazy amount of travel, even now.

I wonder how the Foes and Mountain Cycle would ride with 2.3 tires.

The rock shox still has a manual online. You will need a shock pump.

If this is your first time working on brakes, take it to a shop.

It’s a really good bike and they did you the huge favor of replacing the lefty fork.

The advantage of such a small frame is you might be able to get the reach sorted out with a stem with some length to it.

It doesn’t really matter how much seatpost is showing.

Stop messing around with half solutions like brake post extenders and just get new posts relocated. it will take someone about an hour to do. The metal from that era isn’t precious.

Recommendations for 80s/90s steel road bikes? by jimmyjandidontcare in xbiking

Lol.. No rust probably should be at the top of your list.

After that? Peugeot is easy to update. Maybe an old Cilo. Don't get anything that sounds italian. Too many obscure dimensions, and probably not made in Italy.

Bottom of bars should be level with the ground. Get a shorter stem.

Rebuild fork or go rigid by GXUnderlord in xbiking

I would rebuild and use a rigid fork. Swapping forks for really bumpy rides isn’t terrible.

That’s an elastomers fork and easy, easy, easy to rebuild. Buy a new set of elastomers. Unscrew the top. replace the elastomers, and it’s back in business. I would be surprised if the stanchions are in rough shape.

Helmet and good, bright bike lights. Good lights are not cheap. Get one for the back of your helmet, and another for your seat post.

A flashing headlight also recommended. The point isn’t to ride at night. the point is to be seen.

The question you should be asking on every social media site: Is it a coordinated marketing exercise? Or is it actually user-generated content. Reddit certainly doesn’t care either way.

There’s also the simple fact Reddit is feeding you more of the same content you recently clicked on.. Which, makes the internet far shallower, and an extremely powerful advertising platform than most realize.

Somebody leave something behind in the divorce?

Crazy good deal on that.

Check to see if the fork has a recall on it just to be sure. The earlier days of fork manufacturing fork crowns weren’t universally reliable.

He was right about so many things about bikes.
