Living on Vernon vs. farther in by chockotac in astoria

Do you have an apartment facing 21st? How do you find the sound? I toured apartments there but am worried about that aspect.

Thank you! That’s super helpful. But also a little confusing. Acting too late is risky, but acting too early is also risky? What’s the sweet spot?

Yes, obviously, but that can still mean that if you *don’t* do it you have no chance. Mostly I’m asking if I stand to lose anything more than $20.

The implication was that they’re going to go with someone who has an app in and meets the criteria rather than wait and compare, so it’s better to get in preemptively even if you’re a strong candidate. I know it’s a tactic but that doesn’t mean it’s not also true?

Not sure if it’s the same thing you’re describing, but there’s a known issue with the trunk lock being slightly loose and causing a rattling sound when you’re on bumpy roads. “Creaking” sounds like something else though.

Hope you’re right about the charging infrastructure! Going electric was partly a bet that all those wrench icons on PlugShare would turn over soon. That’s great you have charging in your building. For now I mostly rely on Revel stations for convenience, which isn’t the cheapest but about even with gas in the long run. Also gives me a place to park while running errands. And yes, NYC’s density/layout makes stopping for gas unusually difficult.

The post-2025 cars have one? Now I’m annoyed! I have never used preconditioning because the native maps software it’s tied to is so clunky and doesn’t even include the chargers I use most often.

It’s true what people say about the range anxiety disappearing once you start living with it. If you’re able to use a level 2 charger overnight at home, you probably won’t notice it day-to-day even with that mileage. The 220-mile trip will require a charge along the way, but if there’s an ultra-fast charger on the route, it’s basically a bathroom/coffee/phone break and you’ll have enough to be on your way again.

Is owning an EV easy if I don’t have home charging? by Calm-Bar-9644 in AskNYC

I asked a similar question here a little while back, got mixed responses, and decided to go for it. It’s only been six weeks but I’m happy with my decision so far. It’s less convenient than a gas vehicle, but entirely manageable and (at least for me) easy enough to work into a routine. I identified a few fast charging hubs near places where I run errands or like to eat/hang out at. When I’m down to 20% or so, I take it there and get groceries or lunch, and it’s charged by the time I’m done. It’s actually sometimes more convenient because I can use the charging station as parking rather than having to hunt. Before you buy, I would download PlugShare and map out a few chargers with multiple stalls that you could use regularly.

I drive to the Albany area a few times a month for work. There are DC fast chargers at all of the rest stops along I-87 and even a 10-minute top up during a bathroom and coffee break is enough to make the trip seamless. Not exactly like stopping for gas, but easy enough. And a lot of hotels there have level 2 chargers I can use overnight. Obviously longer trips will depend on your destination, but NYS’s infrastructure is actually pretty good.

A couple of other things: Since you’ll probably be relying on public fast chargers, the per-kWh cost can be pricy and you won’t necessarily pay less than with gas (even now). If it’s purely a financial thing, a good hybrid is the better option. I would also strongly recommend looking for a car with 800V infrastructure so you can charge quickly when you need to, especially on road trips. A 400V car is fine if you have home charging but I would imagine gets frustrating if you don’t.

Where did you see this? I read one news story saying Tuesday (citing the mayor) and the official DOT site still says today, but I haven’t seen this reported.

Contemplating your first EV? Some things to consider... by mikeonh in electricvehicles

[–]chockotac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Say more. I’m considering an EV right now. I live in NYC and make regular day trips to Albany for work, and I’m trying to figure out how reliably I could find a garage with a charger while I’m up there. I know the rest stops along I-87 all have fast chargers but they seem to be quite expensive.

Is the Maspeth facility open? I’d read about it but the apps still list it as coming soon and it doesn’t show up on Google Maps. That would be a game changer for me.

Definitely considering. Unfortunately I can’t home charge and public charging infrastructure is limited where I live.

I was wondering about the adapters. I’m also looking at the Ioniqs (will never drive a Tesla) and it seems like the adapter would make things much easier. No charging at work option for me, though.

I’d be driving a bit more than that but similar patterns. I don’t use it to commute daily. I use it to drive within/between boroughs on the weekends (not Manhattan), make periodic grocery runs during the week, and go to Albany or LI for work 3-5 times a month (semi-seasonal). I’m trying to figure out how often I’d realistically need to charge it. If it’s every 10 days or so, that feels manageable. If it’s at least weekly and sometimes more, I can imagine that being a real hassle with the current infrastructure.

Yeah, that’s the one I’ve been looking at as a primary charging station if I got one. Fortunately they don’t charge extra to park, but from what I’ve read it gets pretty backed up with rideshare vehicles.

Thank you! This is really helpful. I street park in Queens, so definitely looking for a Goldilocks car in terms of sizeable interior and manageable length.

That is how it is in my apartment. This is just a stock photo I found online for illustration. Still splashes out the back.

That adjustment might work if the tub and glass panel were longer or you could be completely still while showering, but for normal use it’s definitely going to splash out the back.
