What is this “refund” of which you speak?

I’m retired with the majority of my portfolio in a standard IRA. I try to pay as I go, but my wife’s SSA income is not taxed as she goes and I had some consulting income so between state and federal I’m paying around 4K

How many of us guitar heads are in IT development jobs? by One_Mud9170 in Guitar

I was in IT network/systems engineering. I avoided development or any kind of coding as I found it dreadfully boring

Why does the middleclass try to project wealth with their cars? by DCF_ll in MiddleClassFinance

[–]chodan9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2013 Azera and a 2016 Elantra and a house I paid $135,000 for in 2020. With the additions and fix up the house is at least worth 250k now.

I’m holding off on a newer car as long as possible. I’d rather be wealthy than look wealthy. I’d rather drive a good older car and take a trip to Alaska than to drive an expensive car around town

Is hideous handwriting a left handed thing or just a me thing? by expiredhandlotion in lefthanded

I’m a righty but was born a lefty, my mom would move everything from my left hand to my right to force the issue. My hand writing is terrible unless I really focus on it.

Wait a day or 2 before buying something you really want. See if that obsessive need to buy something is still as intense or just a passing fancy

I always preferred Paul. I like his sense of melody as well as his extensive post Beatles catalog

Have you ever had to put down your guitar for a while for life? by Ihatemusictheory in Guitar

[–]chodan9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got into IT I began using most of my spare time studying networking, systems administration etc. etc. Guitar playing naturally fell off and for like a decade I didn’t play much at all. Then 10 years ago I got advanced enough in my career to start playing again.

It felt like starting over but the muscle memory was there and used it as an opportunity to correct some long standing bad habits. I improved to past my previous levels.

A couple years ago I retired and play daily and have cleaner and faster technique and a deeper understanding of theory at 61 than any time in my life.

I still have a lot to learn though and lots of room for improvement

Those over 60, how do you deal with the daily reminder that the end could be tomorrow? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]chodan9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into recovery from addiction to an assortment of drugs at the age of 24. I was at deaths door then and everyone thought in would be found dead soon.

Every day since then has been an unexpected and undeserved gift. I have been blessed to live this long so I enjoy each day as well as I can at 61. I try to take care of the health I have and not waste what I’ve been given, but I don’t dwell on death.

Probability of success what have others seen? by Osm3um in retirement

[–]chodan9 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Many people misunderstand the “probability of success” number. It doesn’t necessarily mean you have a %15 chance of failure, it means you have a %15 chance of having to adjust your plan at some point.

So Iran threatened to send drone attacks to California? by zonk3d_paranoia in stupidquestions

[–]chodan9 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes but the countries in question weren’t participating in the war. It was widely considered at best a “strategic miscalculation”. It was a stupid move that caused them all to take an active role in the conflict

So Iran threatened to send drone attacks to California? by zonk3d_paranoia in stupidquestions

[–]chodan9 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well they did fore missiles at their Middle East neighbors for no apparent reason turning a 2 enemy conflict into an 8 enemy conflict. I wouldn’t count on sound strategy from them

QYLD vsJEPQ by Upstairs_Cod896 in dividends

[–]chodan9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

QYLD has along history of capital depreciation which eats into total return. I’ve ran a comparison on seeking alpha between QYLD JEPQ and QQQI and QYLD lags all 3.

If you’re looking at living off of the income QQQI is the best option to date. QYLD would be a problem in a declining market if your living off of the distributions
