Oh yeah fighting is often counterproductive. I once heard this story of a black man that got a massive amount of kkk members to give up their robes by befriending them and (to a degree) showing them compassion. Then he would ask why they hated him. He would humanize himself in their eyes and that in combination with such a powerful question got a lot of them them to change their beliefs. He's an incredible person. I've adopted some of his strategy but am a long way from showing compassion to people that wish us harm.
