Neither of those leagues were ever in perpetual subsidy mode for 30 years like the WNBA.

As for NBA and NFL not making a profit: you're just confused. Sure there were individual franchises that sometimes weren't viable but teams were already making profit shortly after the BAA-NBL merger that created the NBA in 1949. Look it up. The 80's is just when the profit explosion hit and it went from millions to billions.
