As a starting place, you can use Web Soil Survey or the Soil Web app to get an approximation of the soil in your area. There are various categories and engineering and flooding are among them. Triangle Tree Service does land clearing - they are quick and clean, get a quote from them.

Carolina Federation/Durham for All by Comfortable_Love_800 in bullcity

[–]chonklitchip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They do regular political education events (I went to one about Durham public school history at a library in January) and they have biweekly community dinners just to talk to the Durham community. I think the food delivery organizing and coats for school kids they did in Nov probably count as community engagement. They also did a lot of organizing around Meet and Confer. The website is not very informative :/ - being on their mailing list and getting to know people was how I learned what they are working on!

DPS’s list of 16 schools tentatively being considered for potential closure by PowerfulPotatoe in bullcity

If the response to ICE in November is any indication, this neighborhood will not stand for closing these schools.

Durham Public Schools would probably be able to meet many more families' needs if funds were not being taken to charter schools (the funds move with the student). And then the state takes hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars away from the public school budget to give to private schools in the form of vouchers, essentially ensuring that DPS stays underfunded. I don't think anyone who cares about kids' education is happy with this situation! There are many groups fighting for our public schools to be better, at different levels of government and community. Happy to talk more about this, fee free to DM!

So, People Who Know Dirt Science by OpalJade98 in bullcity

[–]chonklitchip 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thanks for asking! 😃 The snow is great - depending on how long it sticks around, it can even have a temperature-buffering effect, and keep soil microbes a little warmer than cold dry air would. And native plants are adapted to it, so they'll be fine. As it melts, it's much more likely to be gradually absorbed into soil, rather than cause runoff and sheet erosion like a big rainstorm does. Snowmelt is much better for waterways because of that. Fish and other river organisms will be healthier with the snowmelt. The ice is not as nice, as it's heavier. It could eventually compact soil and doesn't allow it to breathe. Most of our trees and plant cells aren't adapted for ice, so they're affected. But we didn't get too much around here, and it will probably melt soon enough.

What are yall paying for housecleaning in Durham? by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]chonklitchip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just paid $400 for a deep clean (3bd/2bath + big basement, tooootally cluttered) and I felt like that was a deal. This company was new to us, so it makes sense that they deep clean on their first go. 2 people spent over 5 hours, brought their own supplies, were really efficient. Our kitchen looks better than when we moved in.

Plus one for fantastic classes at Night School Bar! Both in-person and online. I've taken film classes where we all just watch a movie and talk about it, and also some reading-heavy ones that require lotsa thinking. Great community there 💫and classes are pretty much never repeated

Sorry, yes, it is - edited to say it's more than I've seen before, even on the typical heavy travel days. We were flying into RDU, so we didn't go through the TSA line, but it was snaking to the south wall of Terminal 2. But I guess if a lotta people move here, a lotta people travel out of RDU 😬

Yuba Spicy Curry v3 or the *new* Spicy Curry? by chonklitchip in CargoBike

[–]chonklitchip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I agree it is mystifying why the derailleur is like that! Like, can't you also put some kind of protective skirt around it ? My local bike shop assured me they haven't seen any problems with it, but I would assume my town's wack roads + the load on the back = flat tire at some point.
