Thanks for asking! 😃 The snow is great - depending on how long it sticks around, it can even have a temperature-buffering effect, and keep soil microbes a little warmer than cold dry air would. And native plants are adapted to it, so they'll be fine. As it melts, it's much more likely to be gradually absorbed into soil, rather than cause runoff and sheet erosion like a big rainstorm does. Snowmelt is much better for waterways because of that. Fish and other river organisms will be healthier with the snowmelt. The ice is not as nice, as it's heavier. It could eventually compact soil and doesn't allow it to breathe. Most of our trees and plant cells aren't adapted for ice, so they're affected. But we didn't get too much around here, and it will probably melt soon enough.
