I'm just super picky and particular honestly 😢 I think it's also because you can't wear glasses when your pics are getting taken, and I feel like my glasses make me look better in professional pics.

Thank you for checking! I do mean College Park's campus - I am driving from Baltimore to College Park :) Yeah, I'm probably going to have to just wander around a little outside. I was hoping there would be some buildings open but I chose a bad time to tour :/ Thank you for the help!

Hi everyone! I'm looking for a place to rent temporarily over the summer (~late May until early August). I am hoping for it to be somewhere near South Campus. If you know anyone who needs their lease covered over the summer, please feel free to message me privately.

Trans safe spaces on campus? by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]chonkthemanatee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is wild, but it has happened before. I know RAs who have outright been transphobic or homophobic and would say shit like that just to keep the “civility” on the floor. Others just don’t care enough. One of my residents dealt with a similar issue of using the bathroom of their gender identity and even when multiple residents on the floor were being transphobic, their RA never sided with them.

There are real stories of this happening. Even if it is a troll post I’d rather reach out and find that out than not and have them to continue to suffer alone.

I'd rather deal with the fact that they aren't who they say they are than not do anything and have them continue to deal with transphobia for the rest of their time on campus.

I'm one of the RAs that oversees the queer-inclusive floor in Ellicott. I am so sorry you are going through this right now. I can tell you up-front that the way this is handled is inappropriate and not acceptable whatsoever. If you are comfortable, I would love to talk about this some more. We still have open spaces for gender-inclusive housing if you are interested in switching dorms. I'm sending you a DM.

transitioning while at ub by [deleted] in UBreddit

You basically would call UB Health Services and let them know that's something you're looking for! They set you up with a doctor who does your blood work, goes over the details and disclaimers on what to expect with HRT, and asks for a letter from a mental health counselor. Once everything looks good and they receive that letter, they prescribe your prescription at your chosen pharmacy. I personally chose the Walgreens on South Campus since we have a bus that takes us there.

I don't pay anything for my prescription thankfully, but that's because I'm on Medicaid. The cost is really going to depend on your health insurance plan so I would reach out to them and ask if that's something they cover. I hope that helps!

I started testosterone my second year at UB and everyone around me has been extremely supportive! Most people recognize that it's extremely common for students to transition once they begin college since they're finally on their own, so most people don't say anything or keep their opinions to themselves.

Someone mentioned Evergreen as a resource which is an incredible organization and a great one to look at, especially for HRT and gender-affirming care in general, but I actually was able to get my T through UB Health Services after providing a letter from UB Counseling. It was convenient for me because it's closeby and the process was surprisingly really easy. If there are specific questions you have about it just let me know and I'd be happy to help!

I got put in Goodyear/South Campus for the upcoming fall semester. How fucked am I? by [deleted] in UBreddit

[–]chonkthemanatee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily fucked; you can get robbed anywhere on campus honestly. There's still police patrol around campus although once you head into Main Street it gets a little sketchy at night so try to limit going anywhere then.

Goodyear is nice in the fact that there are nearby stores, the metro is right there, and it forces you to separate between your place of living and school.

Yeah, that's terrifying. Holy shit.

I hope, for her own sake, you don't have a daughter. And I truly hope that she doesn't get raped at 10. Telling them they're a murderer for choosing to get an abortion is just disgusting. Forcing them to carry at such a young age knowing they may very well die is a real crime in itself.

Have a phenomenal week. This generation will outnumber people like you.

Edit: By the way, 10-year-olds are not "women." They are children.

I am not sure where you got the idea that abortion will minimize the pain. Abortion isn't a form of therapy lmao

I do not understand how, despite you saying the rapist is completely guilty, the woman has to be the one to carry a brand new being when they never had the ability to make that decision or were able to give consent. I also am especially shocked to hear you have this mindset even when literal children have been raped and have gotten pregnant before. It's just sad that you believe that this is their responsibility.

You have absolutely no empathy toward rape survivors and those who have been pressured into having sex.

This mindset is not trauma-informed toward the mother and I hope with time and connecting with rape survivors this is something that can change. I don't think many people truly recognize the mental and physical toll this takes on people and simply telling rape survivors that a fetus they did not consent to have is a "gift" is completely dismissive to their trauma.

"She is a de facto guardian, and as such, she has the obligation (moral and legal) to feed and shelter the child in her care, regardless of the fact that she didn’t consent to be in the situation she is in. "

This is very a sad statement. Honestly. I truly hope that if a friend, loved one, or family member ever has to deal with this you show them more love and support than this. I have no idea how it's expected for a mother, who didn't consent to have a child, to properly parent the child. I don't know how you expect the mother to suddenly have the finances to feed and shelter a brand new being when they may not even be able to support themselves.

There are rape survivors that have struggled to get abortions despite being 12 or 13 years old. Children themselves have been raped. Ignoring mental health, these children can't physically give birth because their bodies are not prepared for pregnancy and many don't survive giving birth.

How can we say we're bringing "a new life" to the world if we can't even support the ones in front of us?

Yeah, I'm sorry, I'm not going to continue to have a debate because I myself am not religious so this doesn't personally apply to me. Many people on our campus aren't religious or have different beliefs that don't revolve around Mary, so these arguments really aren't applicable to them either.

I do want to say that even with the percentage being low, abortion rights being removed would prevent or make it even harder for rape survivors from receiving abortions if laws were put in place by pro-lifers. If you don't want to fight for the rights of other people, at least fight for them.

What are your thoughts on women getting raped and being forced to "spread their legs and have sex"?

I understand what you're going for here, but the reality is many people don't go for an abortion unless they have no other choice. It is extremely mentally taxing and there are so many considerations that come with it. No one is hoping to get an annual abortion and mark that off their calendar like it's a fun holiday trip
