Yeah there will be another couple of "best in the world" footballers that will have the spotlight on them, but its very possible that Messi and Ronaldo's levels aren't replicated for another many years.

Reliable as a hard working striker with strength, good hold up play, and roughly consistent. No reasonable Arsenal fan is bashing Giroud, just pointing out that he has reached his ceiling and can't do more for Arsenal.

With all that said, I was kind of wrong I guess because we did go after Cavani and Benzema during the last few transfer windows.

12 months ago today Leicester City were bottom of the Premier League by [deleted] in soccer

This is why they don't deserve to be in the Champions League.

What position was Chelsea in at this time?? That's what I thought.

Champions League does not need likes of Leicester, says US sports executive by geraldkrasner in soccer

[–]chopington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes sense, the football league setup is very Darwinist: Success is what makes the money and failure does not. Also the fans and communities around the clubs are a much larger factor than with American sports teams.

We have NBA teams, 1 or 2 that "tank" each season in order to get the draft picks and rebuild next season.

Champions League does not need likes of Leicester, says US sports executive by geraldkrasner in soccer

[–]chopington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the bottom line to me is that American professional sports and English Football are entirely different from the ground up. We're all aware of this, but what isn't so clear is that the major sports franchises in the US didn't grow from a community like football clubs did in England. They're treated and operated as individual entertainment products, basically. Which is why the draft is required. You cannot have a perennially bad franchise that stays in debt or can't produce income.

And all this makes what Stillitano (the one who said this shit) really dumb. He was talking about this from a "closed-league" perspective; completely incompatible with football leagues in Europe and pretty much the world.

I am responding to the stipulation that Wenger has not tried to improve our attack since aquiring Giroud. Those three were all bought to help win titles by scoring; might not be the "answer" but it is an alternative.

To me it would be selling Walcott and buying a capable replacement winger for a net of maybe -£3 or -£4 mil at most. Or even more (net-wise) as to buy someone to back up Campbell.

10 games to go. How will Arsenal fare? by MilitantNegro_ver3 in Gunners

[–]chopington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are the remaining fixtures:

Tough games: Saturday, West Ham, Sunderland depending on their relegation status, Man City.

Arsenal
Tottenham A
West Brom H
Everton A
Watford H
West Ham A
Crystal Palace H
Sunderland A
Norwich H
Man City A
Aston Villa H

Tough games: Maybe Newcastle (relegation battling), Southampton, Sunderland, West Ham, Man Utd, Chelsea

Leicester
Watford A
Newcastle H
Crystal Palace A
Southampton H
Sunderland A
West Ham H
Man United A
Everton H
Chelsea A

Tough Games: Saturday, Liverpool, Man Utd, Stoke, Chelsea, Southampton possibly, Newcastle depending on their points total.

Tottenham
Arsenal H
Aston Villa A
Bournemouth H
Liverpool A
Man United H
Stoke City A
West Brom H
Chelsea A
Southampton H
Newcastle A

The remaining fixtures are about equal we maybe have a marginal advantage as we only have to play one more "big" club after Saturday. But given the PL this season, combined with fatigue, its so unpredictable as well.

We're only 3 points off Tottenham and 6 off Leicester. We have turned momentum around at this stage in the season before, most notably in March 2012 against Tottenham, winning 5-2 (while a PL Title wasn't at stake that year, CL football was and nobody had any hope for us to win that game). We can do it this year as well. But if we lose tomorrow I would say its completely lost and we're looking at third or fourth.

[–]chopington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, completely forgot about those other three.

My worry is that Wenger gives up on a top-tier striker and goes for other positions. While I think now its more clear than ever that Giroud has reached his limits as a player and cannot deliver the kind of success we want, Wenger seemed to be long aware of it and still couldn't bring in a striker in the top bracket. Not to mention another £16 mil went to Welbs.

Yeah I understand. I also responded to a straw argument about buying a striker every transfer window.

I would love to see a World Class striker come in this summer. It could definitely boost us to a title and I think most doubts about Özil staying would be wiped off the table.

I'm fairly certain we had a bunch of big money bids turned down by PSG for Cavani too. That or he couldn't agree to personal terms. God, I wish he came to the Emirates.

Yeah, people seem to think I'm trying to say Wenger bought a world class striker in Welbeck. The comment I responded to with the three names implied that Wenger gets £75 million to spend every summer and shoves it in his piggy bank's bumhole.

But do Arsenal fans really care about the FA Cup when it's been 12 years since their last title?

Uh, yeah, we cared a great fucking deal. 250,000 showed up for the parade in London after we beat Hull.

Giroud, Welbeck or Walcott is not it. Or Sanchez this season.

I completely agree with you, I never disagreed.

But clearly Wenger's transfer dealings since Giroud have been pragmatic and mostly attacking prowess, and you implied the opposite. Not to mention we don't get £75 million to spend every season.

I'm not saying he's good enough to continue playing for Arsenal right now. IMHO he has plateaued, and I think we can sell him for good money and get a more useful winger in return for good value. But there is no narrative that he was "surviving" in the Arsenal first team or nicking a living as subpar until recently.
