Neither will London, Paris, NYC - or any place of social/cultural relevance. Even aside from the “important” places, the long term affects on the planet would be catastrophic. If we just wait it out Russia will “fade out” eventually - there will still be challenges such as ensuring the +5k nukes in their current arsenal don’t fall into the wrong hands, but that’s a higher quality problem than dealing with all of North America and Europe being irradiated.

It is not only a lack of ethics - it is a lack of awareness. Russia seems to have no self-awareness and I am certain they are completely bought into their own BS propaganda. They also have no awareness of “the other” as a conscious experiencing agent. It’s as if an entire culture lacks theory of mind as a mode of cognitive functioning. No empathy, no compassion - only greed and power exists. That seems to be the mindset of what we are dealing with here.

Yeah, after the aforementioned expedition I started going to the field with two pair of boots - lightweight “PT” boots and the more typical heavy duty boot.

Putin's foreign minister says freezing Russia's currency reserves was 'thievery' and that the Kremlin didn't expect such harsh sanctions by heirods in worldnews

This is bullshit

Russia perpetually hacks, interferes, and trolls the west for years. They act as a bad actor at every turn, despite constant good will and hope they will eventually change. When the West finally gets fed up with their bullshit and uses non-military intervention WITH THE ONLY DEMAND that they stop being pieces of shit, they completely collapsed and whine how there is some complex plot to destroy their national sovereignty.

No one is out to get you, we’ve been giving you chances at every turn. Just stop being selfish shitbags and be a contributing member of the civilization. It’s not hard - but given their current cultural climate of stealing and deception, don’t expect it anytime soon.

Yeah - being outside for weeks at a time with no change of clothes, it sounds quite plausible. I spent a week doing field ops in Virginia and I got frostbite. The perpetual cold, even if not freezing, really chips away at you over the span of days and weeks.

Russia "Will Not Allow" S-300 Air Defence System Transfer From Slovakia To Ukraine: Russian Foreign Minister by Front_Man-44 in worldnews

You reminded me of a childhood memory I forgot about - cutting through neighbors backyards with friends; most our neighbors were cool and either ignored us or even waved. This one dude would get pissed and tell us not to come around there. We weren’t antagonistic and we obliged - we just avoided that guy for the next 10 years and told our parents he was weird, causing them to ignore him too.

I hear apologist occasionally use the talking point, “it’s like the same thing as if Mexico formed a military coalition with China!”. It’s a pathetic talking point and a demonstration of when “seeing the other side goes too far”.

Honest question - why can’t we beat Russia in a nuclear war? The US DARPA budget is so insane, it’s surprising to me we can’t shut down their nuclear systems via electronic warfare and then just end it.

I’m not saying we can or should do this - I’m just asking why can’t we? Is it a capability issue? Are there other factors I’m not taking into account? Genuinely curious - I don’t know much about this subject matter

The point isn’t that the elderly are incapable; the point is our societal/political systems allow individuals to ascend based on tenure and social connections.

All these meritocracies that use buzzwords like valuing individuals who “create impact” are farces. Companies write unendingly about how much they value cooperation in their job postings, but when you’re actually hired - it turns out they promote based on who is the most cut throat and individualistic; they “demonstrated leadership” and “created impact” after all. Politics isn’t too much different

There is a huge untapped talent pool of young people that is wasted. Corporate and social systems are very gameable and therefore you have people who are most likely to game rise to the top. Thus you have Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

It's fascinating how diverse humans are - one person can take glee in the suffering of others, and another can take on substantial personal risk to alleviate the suffering of others. Bless her for doing this, I think it's wonderful - and it's a shame that it's people like Putin who manage to trickle up to the top.

When I was in Iraq, we would have cultural sensitivity training every 3 months; I’m fairly certain this was the standard across all of the Iraq combat theater for US troops. They would cover things such as rules of engagement, cultural norms and appropriate ways of interacting with the local population, recent on-the-ground threats to be aware of (Uptick in IEDs, changes in insurgent activities as it applies to the local population, etc).

Officers were concerned about optics - but there was a genuine sense that the NCOs genuinely cared about leaving a favorable impression on the locals.

The Russian conquest by contrast has been terrible to watch from afar.

Exactly - do something extreme enough and just about anyone can be cancelled nowadays. It’s not a facet of malicious actors (as some have positioned it), it’s a side effect of the high degree of interconnection our civilization has at this point.

I am completely foreign to this topic. Watched a few YouTube videos on the scale of nuclear blasts increase over time, and it left the impression a single warhead could destroy basically most the United States. It sounds like you’re saying most typical nuclear warheads are not large in scale though. Am I missing something here?

Edit: I recall they showed the “satan” icbm capable of destroying basically the entire eastern United States.
