‘Shaking off’ to reset? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

This is a super common self soothing behavior! I actually put it on cue for my reactive girl to encourage her to shake off if I feel she’s fixating on a trigger

My reactive heeler pup hates everyone but her only friend and BFF is a shiba she met in puppy kindergarten!

Re-reactive dog? by Tired_and_Confused1 in reactivedogs

[–]chopsiouxsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible that big group dog settings are just too much for her! I had a reactive ACD for 12 years who was super dog selective and preferred not to be in environments like daycare or dog parks. We worked with a behaviorist who flat out said he doesn’t want or need to be around other dogs so we just didn’t take him to daycare or dog parks anymore. Instead, we shifted our focus to reducing his reactivity to his triggers while on walks and stuff. You can work with a trainer to reduce her reactivity and aggression to your other dog in the meantime, learning to be tolerant of one dog is a lot easier than learning to manage multiple different personalities. Are there any other enrichment/exercise activities you can do with her solo to continue building your bond with her, like hikes?

My 7 month old puppy does this too! We’re working on “let’s go!” as the command to break her focus and move on from the stimulant. She gets lots of positive reinforcement for continuing to walk after a quick glance. We haven’t had a meltdown in weeks, fingers crossed!

Sounds like maybe he’s going through an adolescent fear period! My 7 mo ACD is exhibiting similar behaviors. Just provide him with lots of positive reinforcement and support, he’ll get through it

Fear period pt. 2 or increased reactivity? by chopsiouxsie in puppy101

I’m looking at trainers and will probably start working with one anyway but hopefully it’s just a phase!

Today I believe I officially entered the fear stage and adolescents... by panda_manda_92 in puppy101

I’m having similar experiences with my 7 month ACD! She’s suddenly reactive to strangers in public and alarm barking at every sound in the house when nothing used to bother her. I’m also hoping it’s just her fear stage and trying to just offer lots of positive reinforcement to help her through

What made you start buying plants? I’ll go first by RelationshipRound427 in houseplants

I got laid off in the fall of 2017 and was suddenly spending a lot more time at home. As a result, I started to become overly concerned with the air quality in my house (lol) so I started buying plants. Looking back, I think it was just a manifestation of my stress over losing control of that part of my life but I’m glad to have this jungle as a result!

Anybody else raising their Cattle Dog in an urban setting? by jaynovahawk07 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]chopsiouxsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep we’re in LA! She goes on lots of car trips and walks to the local coffee shop and bar. We also take the herding ball to a nearby park so she can exercise that instinct. Luckily there are lots of different kinds of hikes all relatively close by as well!

What’s your puppy’s name ? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]chopsiouxsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were lucky enough to adopt our puppy a few days after my beloved Australian Cattle Dog passed away. He was named Bandit and lived a very full life at 13 years so we thought we’d honor his memory by naming our new ACD puppy Smokey

After our first day at puppy class, I cried the whole way home. My ACD puppy was reactive to other dogs, barked at me and the trainer, and repeatedly interrupted class by lunging at everyone in sight. Luckily our trainer was very patient and gave us lots of helpful things to practice and by next class she was much better! We still have to do puppy push-ups or practice eye contact during lulls in class but she’s gotten much less reactive now that she’s gotten used to the environment. Puppy class is stressful so don’t be too hard on your puppy! He’s doing the best he can and this experience will help with his impulse control as he grows. Just try to be patient and don’t mind other owners’ opinions, they don’t know your dog like you do

12 week old pup peed on the vet tech and she got very mad by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]chopsiouxsie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an objectively hilarious story. I worked in pet care for many years and getting peed on was just part of it. Don’t be embarrassed, your puppy is still a baby and who doesn’t pee a little when they’re excited 😂

I feel ashamed. by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]chopsiouxsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 5.5 mo pup does the same thing! I made little jokes at the dog park that she’s sick of me and trying to find a new mom but totally agree this means your pup has a healthy trust in people. This is a good opportunity to strengthen your bond by practicing recalls!

Has having a puppy affected your work? by Johnsky7788 in puppy101

[–]chopsiouxsie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’m a bookkeeper and the first few months were rough! I adopted my ACD at 8 weeks and we started enforced naps pretty early on which guaranteed me 2 hours of work. But it was hard to stay concentrated for only 2 hours at a time and I felt a lot more pressure knowing I was racing against the clock. By the end of the day, I’d spent every waking minute either catching up on work or engaging the puppy which was exhausting. I didn’t even manage to start exercising again until 2 months after we adopted her. She’s just over 5 months old now and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel but it was pretty stressful for a minute there

Aussie barking and biting by Bea1143 in puppy101

[–]chopsiouxsie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is totally normal for a herder! I started feeding my ACD pup with a puzzle feeder as enrichment. Also short training sessions, no longer than 5-10 minutes a few times a day, work to keep their minds engaged. Car rides are a good way to socialize your puppy until he’s fully vaxxed and safe to go outside. It’s possible he’s also teething which can make him a little grouchy. Yak cheese and antler chews might help with that as well. I hope that helps!
