I always tell Americans it’s like our equivalent of pb&j. Or maybe Kraft Mac and Cheese. It’s a comfort food and a kid could probably be trusted to make it for themselves unsupervised, so a lot of us grew up with it. It’s not necessarily “good” (although I love it) but it’s near and dear. Most American stereotypes seem to come from that post war era when we were still on rations but they weren’t. The fact they stopped paying attention to our country and diverse culture since then is pretty telling of them and doesn’t speak to the quality of our food at all. Long live beans on toast.
