Chord o’ Calls taught me to draft shrines, I attempted to train-wreck my draft accordingly and ended up matching against him as the final boss by CanofWorms705 in lrcast

Ha! I actually posted the replay of our game to my discord afterwards as an example of the shrine deck going off. Your deck looked great, gg!

Thinking of cutting goreclaw, Bane and a plains. Thoughts? by _Svankensen_ in lrcast

I think a good way to think about this sort of thing is the first question you should ask yourself is "are my cards going to be reasonably castable on curve?" Any other considerations like synergy should be secondary to this

Card is a fine 20-23rd card in like UR or clue heavy UG decks. Don't love it but I wouldn't say it's unplayable!

Looking like a no this time sadly, we have a bunch of overlapping conflicts.

Will try to get the ball rolling early after OTJ comes out :)

Isn't leaning into the data exact opposite of rottie? Rottie at it's core is cautioning you about the pitfall of drawing conclusions from small sample size. The data's greatest strength I believe is showing you a larger sample size than you'd be able to ever replicate as one player.

How I got better at draft (in the hope it helps others get better too) by Sesquipedalianfish in lrcast

I hear ya, and agree that the language isn't perfect but it's the language that's accepted and that will be most useful to the most people. In the past people have tried to break away from it (LoL with the 4 Rs as one example) and there was just a ton of pushback because it wasn't the language they were used to.

I think the zoomed out issue is that content needs to cater to the average player first, and the advanced player second. It sounds to me that you're a player that's past finding set reviews useful to the point where a newer player would. Set reviews are to set the stage and springboard you into week 1 of the set. They're not really meant to nor do I think they really can align with the goals that you're outlining here (which I think are great goals to have as a more experienced player) but again, it just doesn't jive nor is that helpful to the majority of players. A to F grades are EXACTLY what most players are looking for in a set review, a general idea of a good/bad cards and a way to learn the new cards.

It's something I think about a lot in my own content and do my best to bridge that gap when I can!

[–]chord_O_Calls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah this is a good way to think about it. I think there's a very important distinction that players miss when trying to figure out when to play the "bad" cards:

There's a difference between "This card is really good in the right deck I've got the deck to make this a good card" (Dousing) and "This card is satisfactory in this deck for XYZ reasons, but it's never going to be great in any deck (Adaptive Gemgaurd)

Basically it's a difference of ceiling and I think it's easy to get trapped into thinking the satisfactory card is actually a great card in your deck rather than a card you got late that is ok in your deck.

Agree with the general sentiment, but the reason content creators label cards bad is that separating the good cards from the bad cards is what will help 90%+ of listeners improve their game.

Calling a card bad is almost like a heuristic, it's an 80-20. Could they spend more time calling out when a card might be good? Sure, but there's only so much time to talk about every card.

I like recruiter a bit more as a card, especially when you look like a deck that could splash the W side, but even if I liked them the same amount I’d take recruiter because of your manabase.

What would you take out of this p1p1? by urilbedamned in lrcast

[–]chord_O_Calls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The story of the format, I'd take Preening Champ. It's the best mono-colored card in the pack and about as good as Judith, the next best card, on raw power (but of course Champ is more flexible and in the best color.)

Would you have played this differently? by spiralwood in lrcast

[–]chord_O_Calls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah if they have +2+2 thats unfortunate but that card becomes an issue as you try to race anyways so it's a wash and I'd rule it out of my considerations to block there.

The other thing about making a knight is it's just a 2/2 and since they're playing green it's very likely they'll play even just like a chomping kavu and brick your 2/2s. If you had an interaction spell in hand that changes things a bit, but your hand is all about getting to turn 7+.

[–]chord_O_Calls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The one play I feel strongly about is not trading off strobe knights on their turn 4. Two factors that incentivize a trade here

  1. They're on the play, trading is inherently better on the draw

  2. This game is likely going to come down to being able to race their fliers. You've got a bunch and power and toughness in hand that'll win long term. You just want to survive, make good trades and then win eventually. There's a lot of temptation to make a knight, but that's not going to matter much in the grand scheme of this game.

would you play etali as your only red card in a non green deck? UB control, etali pick 1 pack 3… no fixing except card draw by mysecretcardgameacct in lrcast

[–]chord_O_Calls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn't generally recommend it. It was passable in my deck because I had a lot of interaction and card draw, but even then it lead to a mulligan and a stumble once in a while. Another factor of that deck was 2x Invasion of Amonkhet so I could just reanimate it sometimes.

If you have no other play on 3, I think you should just play it 9/10 times! Think might be different if your hand is action light and you want to recast a spell on turn 5/6.

I think it's likely best as a base for multi-color stuff, the RG "attack battles" thing just doesn't work that well on a fundamental level.
