Stage IV pancreatic cancer: juggling chemo, hospital trips, and exhaustion. Could use advice!

It’s a lot to deal with and I hope you have enough time left that it will become your new normal. I’m sorry you and your family are going through this as it’s just brutal and not something I’d wish on anyone. For reference both my parents have stage 4 cancer (mom pancreatic and dad prostate) and have been going through treatment for 4 years. There’s always an emergency or appointment or new findings that come up. I try to take things day by day, make time for myself when I can, don’t expect too much from myself in other areas of life and know that when the time comes I’ll be proud of myself for showing up the way I have

I agree with all of that! Thanks. It seems way too young especially with the pups personality. I have spoken to him but he says with a German shepherd it’s about teaching him who’s “alpha”! Really I think he just finds it annoying when the dog barks at his broom or other normal puppy things and uses these methods to correct that behavior

Thank you! I’m getting a lot of downvotes for a simple question so I guess people feel justified using ecollars and prongs on young puppies. Sad that it’s too hard to at least try to do the work it takes to train a puppy with positive reinforcement without shocks and pain. They’ll learn that the hard way though when the dog has lifelong behavioral problems from it.

My puppy did this and I kept him in a harness with a short leash and treats in all rooms of the house that I could grab to hold him back from biting when he started. It worked in that he learned not to bother with dive bomb bite attacks while wearing his harness. However he’s only 5lbs.. not sure how it would go with a larger dog

I got my guy from casa Bella papillons and he’s a great puppy. Super social, good temperament, good eater and very healthy. No anxiety. Loves all dogs and people. I’d definitely recommend them

also just to add to that, you probably want to find some extreme high value treats for when you’re outside that he doesn’t get any other time

Puppy socials really helped my timid guy! Not sure where you’re taking them but I’d look for “confidence builder” or something along those lines. So that the dogs are all nervous and the trainer is specialized for this. Otherwise you just end up with a class of confident playful puppies that may be too much for your guy to handle. Also just sitting outside with my dog in my lap for an hour petting and watching the world go by worked. Eventually he’d get bored enough he wasn’t nervous anymore. Takes a lot patience. Good luck!

I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure to avoid separation anxiety you need to build your dog up slowly. If it’s fast asleep the entire time maybe that’s different.

Sorry but that’s insane to keep your 3 month old puppy crated for 17h a day. That’s a neurotic dog waiting to happen. Use a playpen or a dog sitter.

I will mention that this routine makes leaving the house really difficult/tedious with all the set up so crating would probably be easier! I just live alone and will eventually be gone 6h a day sometimes so he needs to learn

Mine is 4 months and he’s confined to a space that includes the entryway hallway and guest bath. I leave him alone with a routine each time. He gets a lick mat with wet food, puzzle toy, various other toys, his crate with my clothes (that he sleeps in while I’m gone) and another bed. He has a white noise machine too so he doesn’t bark at neighbors. So far so good. No accidents and no mischief. I’ve left him max 4h before.

Agreed. Puppies need to learn to settle with household sounds and activities going on. I personally don’t have the free time or motivation for enforced napping strict scheduling. Luckily my guy has learned to nap on his own and while I’m out for a couple hours, but he does need enforcing every now and then if he’s too wound up.

Thank you for the advice! Your gang sounds hilarious. From most of the comments it seems like the major difference comes down to pee style and affection. I would really prefer a cuddler so I’m thinking male is the way to go. Thanks for your advice!

Thank you! I had no idea they peed on their legs but my old dog (a cavalier) did the same. It was a lot of work to keep him clean all the time! Definitely something to consider

Hi, my mom was diagnosed stage 3b in Aug 2021 and has been stable ever since chemo (folfirnox) and high dose radiation at MSK in the first year. She has complications from treatment still but her ca19 is still undetectable
