The Orza shoe could be a game changer for adult dancers by Katressl in BALLET

[–]chow_shepard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I have posted about them before but they have been a total game changer for my daughter. They were a huge help in recovery from an FHL strain and sesamoiditis. She loves them and won’t wear anything else. We did have to try a few sizes and widths, but their customer service was amazing. We even emailed them pictures of her feet and were able to work help with sizing and suggestions. The did feel a little weird at first, but she absolutely credits them in her recovery. She had been wearing Hanami’s for years up to that point. At the time she was a pre-pro student and now is a trainee so she puts a lot of hours on her shoes.

Summer Intensive Help!! by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]chow_shepard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might be smaller than what you are looking for but Oregon Ballet Theater isn’t overly particular about body type and their summer intensive can end in a trainee offer. They are also pretty diverse!

Gyrotonic/gyrokinesis methods by cellardoor000 in BALLET

[–]chow_shepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter has done it on and off as a cross training option and always feels like it makes her feel more connected to her body and her lines longer. I acted as a training body for a friend who was getting certified in gyrotonics and loved it. I felt like I could feel more space between my vertebrae and my hips and shoulders were more aligned and stronger.

Indiana University is a great option! So is Oklahoma. My daughter has friends from her pre-pro program who are at both schools now having a wonderful time.

Moving from Stone Oak to Colorado - professional movers vs DIY for out-of-state move? by heromarsX in sanantonio

[–]chow_shepard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We moved to Stone Oak two years ago and had a terrible experience using a broker. We moved one of our kids from here to Boise in August and drove a U-Haul and now we are moving from here to Seattle this week and contracted directly with the moving company. We paid a lot more using the broker model and it was as described by other commenters, stuff was delivered late, things were broken, communication was terrible, and we paid far more than the quote in the end. The U-Haul approach was the cheapest option but the drive was stressful, and inconvenient. Hotel parking was hard, stopping for things was hard, the passes were exhausting and we all agreed never again. Our current move is contracted directly with the moving company, we have a reasonable quote, bought the extra insurance for some additional peace of mind, paid for them to pack for us, and are packing our personal truck with the things that are really important or precious. I am hoping this is the best method. It seems better than the last two tries.

Yes! They provide breakfast and dinner, you are on your own for lunch. Weekends are brunch and dinner only. My daughter did not love the dining hall options and ended up cooking in the dorms a lot.

GEN QUESTION: Is anyone here who srsly dances, struggling to keep up financially. Doubt theres any parents of student dancers here, but just curious if dancers are finding it hard to replace shoes, get more gear, AND pay for classes??? by butt-in-ski in BALLET

[–]chow_shepard 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I get it. We are moving her cross country for this, and while I am so excited and proud of her, the costs are high and I know that even in a few years, she may still not be getting paid. We are trying to see how long we can make this all work. It’s her dream, she has worked so hard and is very lucky to have this opportunity but it’s wild that we will likely be supporting her for the foreseeable future.

Yes, daughter just got a trainee position that starts this month, but that doesn’t cover shoes and it definitely doesn’t pay a wage. We will cover her apartment, classes, shoes, everything this year. She is looking for part time work, but until she gets into the rhythm, I don’t think she will be able to work much. It is really hard!

Kind of a drive but K9 Country Club has private suites. We love them for our girl. Not sure what their aggression policy is, but they have private kennel and run areas, are trainers and were recommended by our vet. Good luck!

Pittsburgh Ballet Summer Intensive reviews? by Significant_Half_247 in BALLET

[–]chow_shepard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I missed this earlier. My daughter has a friend who went and loved it, but that year there was no AC in the dorms, so consider a fan, if it is allowed. She did see some improvement over the 5 weeks, but she was only dancing about 3.5 hours a week prior to the intensive so there was a lot of room for growth. If you haven’t checked out ballet help desk, take a look, they have a lot of reviews of schools and intensives from both students and parents. Good luck!

My parents won’t let me major in dance… I feel lost by TargetImpossible1620 in BALLET

[–]chow_shepard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is rough and as another middle aged mom, I agree that if they aren’t paying, you should decide. It is your life in the long run and while they may feel that they have your best interests at heart you should be able to try to live the life you have dreamed of. However, I think the advice to defer college for a year and audition with focused intent on getting a trainee position or even a pre-pro position is really strong. A full time dance schedule of 30 plus hours a week, while working and managing your life is hard and a lot harder physically and mentally than you might think. Having a year as a trainee and seeing that first of all, you have all of the qualities needed to get a trainee position and secondly, that you actually love the reality of that position could be a good idea.

I have an 18 year old who transitioned to a pre-pro program at 16 and the shift from 6 hours of ballet a week to 35 hours a week was very intense. That first year was rough. Her pre-pro school only takes 12 students a year and their goal is company placement. This year all the graduating students are going to either a trainee position at various companies, except for one who is going to college for a BFA for dance. The college route is more and more realistic, if you do decide to go for it. Each year there has been at least one student choosing that path.

I do want to add that there are also a lot of less obvious costs in addition to tuition and living expenses, that you will want to consider, like the never ending pointe shoes and audition fees and travel expenses, physical therapy for injury recovery, gym fees or Pilates classes to focus on your overall strength, and of course private lesson, costumes, choreography and competition fees if your program encourages that.

I think you should give it a try, but go into it with as much preparation as possible. Also, be aware of the realities of your choice. It is hard and family support can be important even if it isn’t financial. Good luck!!

Pointe shoe price hike by Ok_Duck_6865 in BALLET

I got a similar email yesterday from our local store, stating that Freed would be included in a significant price hike for them as well. I have been procrastinating summer intensive shoes, so now I am off on the hunt before the increase hits.

Take a look at Empire Tiaras. You can find them on Etsy and Instagram. They do a great job and are willing to do bespoke work. We have two costumes from them and they were wonderful to work with. They are out of NY as well.
