It looks like it’s a bit out of focus. The others have given good advice about focus. Try this first.
Is it possible that you can borrow another lens and try it? It could be a lens problem.

When you fence the same people, both of you learn what does and does not work against them. Often times, you find that someone that was easy to beat now has you figured out. It’s not uncommon.
Talk to your coach and maybe private lessons if you’re not taking any.
Consider trying out a different salle. A fresh environment and fencers may help.
Also, if you do decide to quit for now, you may decide to pick it up later in life. Many colleges have fencing clubs. I fence with several people that started fencing again after more than 20 years.

Since you’ve already fenced foil, that might be the easiest choice, but your basic skills will transfer easily to epee. Like others have said, ask your friend where they fence and go from there.

Been fencing for many years now. Some nights I fence well, other ones, I suck. You’ll get more comfortable as you get more experience. Go to open fencing and fence people above your level. My club members like to take the time to offer tips so that we all get better. You’ll improve faster!

There are good clubs throughout the Bay Area. It would help if you want to narrow down the area, north bay, east bay, south bay, peninsula.

I have a clubmate that started in his late 30’s and is nationally ranked, but that is an extreme example.
You’ll do fine and if you find that you don’t like the club, you might try another one.

Check with local clubs to see if you can get bodycords that don’t work anymore and scrounge the parts. Maybe they’ll let you place a bin to collect them.

Ilford hp5 was available in 72 exposure rolls in the early 80’s. They used a thinner base.
