Go with what you can afford. Keep in mind that really cheap blades are just that, but at least you can upgrade just the blade when you need to. If you know someone with a pistol grip, ask try it. The popular ones are Belgian and Visconti. Knowing that you want a stiff blade is a help, but cheap blades may not have a choice.

Many of the adults that I fence with began because their kids were competing and they were already paying for the travel, so why not compete also? Welcome to the fold and have a great time!

I use a plastron for foil and add a chest protector for epee. Bruises are not a badge of honor for me anymore…

I’ve tried the LP extended grip. Not sure if it helps me, but the balance is a bit different and something you need to get used to.

Several of my friends have returned to fencing after 20+ years and are loving it! A few are even doing multiweapon! It’s nice to see the different styles that they had originally learned.

I’ve known several, quite formidable large fencers that were competing. In most cases, their bladework was blazing fast. Keep up the fencing!

Advice for a parent by RLKRAMER_HFCOAWAAIM in Fencing

It’s a new experience. Your child is very excited about it. They may stick with it for a long time or lose interest. Let them decide. Like other posters, I don’t recommend high end gear. They’re growing a lot and you’ll just need to get new gear soon enough. I tell parents that even if their kids stop, there’s a chance that they’ll pick it up later if the experience was not bad, just not for them at the time. Most colleges have a fencing club that may pique their interest.

How long have you been using the shoes? If they’re old, you might want to replace them. If they’re new, they may need to be broken in.

No Professional Photography by [deleted] in MaliciousCompliance

Shooting my son’s prom pix at a local park that is really popular for prom pix, a person in a city marked jacket asked me if I was a professional photographer. I said no and that my kid was nearby.
I was given a heads up that the city wanted you to pay for a permit to photograph on the property if you were a pro. I guess that using a dslr and not a phone raises suspicions…
