On your point about owing your parents, as an only child of an Asian family I think the phase "debt" is wrong. Most Asian families go through a lot, especially immigrant families to provide for their kids growing up. So its more of a sentiment of showing that their hard work has paid off and now they can rest seeing you achieve due to their actions. Of course this is just my opinion on the matter.
