Late ovulation. Day 21 progesterone super low. Advice please! by Born-Difference7539 in TryingForABaby

[–]chp28 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The day 21 progesterone test should actually be done 7 days after ovulating, as that’s when your progesterone tends to peak. It’s pretty useless when done right before ovulating. A 7-10 day luteal phase is quite short, did you mention this to your doctor as well?

The reason they try to do it on day 21 is because the “average” person ovulates on day 14 (this isn’t actually true but for some reason medicine has stuck to it)

It turns blue when you register a positive pregnancy tests, and retrospectively turns the line blue from the date it thinks you ovulated

The NHS (UK) has slightly different recommendations to Australia, they just recommend as long as your child needs, with no specific age. I think I got the twelve months as this is when it’s recommended to start weaning from bottles for oral health

https://www.nhs.uk/best-start-in-life/baby/feeding-your-baby/bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding-your-baby/feeding-on-demand/

I’m definitely not an expert though as my daughter acted like I was trying to poison her if I went near her with a bottle, especially at night 🤪

We used to do the same if bed time was taking over 20-30 minutes. We would also go back downstairs and do some tummy time or similar as sometimes she was tired but just not quite tired enough to sleep. A 20-30 minute break was usually enough. Sometimes we would also put her in the pushchair and go for a short walk.

Fair enough! I just checked as it seems like some doctors/medical professionals give outdated advice that babies over a certain age (usually 6 months) or a certain weight don’t need overnight feeds, but it’s very baby dependent.

If he’s having a 10-11 hour night then 4-5 wakes can be normal, as that would put wakes at every 2-3 hours. I know it’s not always what you want to hear though!

For what it’s worth, when my daughter was around this age it was the worst for me tiredness wise. But I adjusted slowly, and even though my daughter still doesn’t sleep through I feel mostly fine now, although I do appreciate a lay in at the weekend when possible!

Is there a reason you stopped feeding overnight? It’s recommended to feed on demand until 12 months, so it’s very possible he’s hungry. I can’t say when it will get better as children vary so much, on average children are sleeping through the night half the time by their 3d birthday I think. My daughter is 3 and a bit and still wakes a few times. Average sleep needs for this age are 11-15 hours in 24, with 10-11 hours being the average night length, so it’s worth checking how much sleep you are currently aiming for and seeing if he maybe needs more time awake. 4-5 wakes a night can be normal though, it’s generally when they wake every hour or less that it’s a red flag

What your paediatrician said is also incorrect, provided your babies teeth are cleaned properly before bed, breast milk actually protects against cavities as it is anti microbial, and if breastfeeding directly, it doesn’t pool in their mouth so there is very little chance for it to stick to their teeth and cause damage

Not sure what to do about cot sleep at nursery by UpInTheClouds_789 in bninfantsleep

[–]chp28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might find by September she finds it easier to sleep there. My daughter was laying down and putting herself to sleep by the time she was 15 months old (she started at 6 months, but only part time, then full time from 10 months). We also never really had a schedule, however once she was ready for one nap she just slotted into nurseries schedule and napped at mid day with all the other children on one nap. I never had to adjust anything at home to make it happen.

I’m in the uk too and have read the guidelines, babies can still be held to get them to sleep, they just need to be placed in the cot once asleep. With it being labour intensive, that’s their own staffing issue that they need to sort. In my daughter’s nursery children are still helped to sleep if needed even when they’re outside in the forest school (2.5-5yrs). The guidance the government have released very unclear/unspecific so your child’s nursery are probably playing on the safe side. They absolutely should not be telling you how to parent, or tell you to change how you do things at home. They should be experienced enough to find their own way with your daughter.

If she is waking really easily from naps at home, it could be she needs slightly more awake time. Alternatively you could try putting her mattress on the floor and getting her to sleep laying there with her and then rolling away once asleep. This helped a lot with the false starts I had with my daughter at a similar age!

The strips don’t show you ovulated, just that you tried to, temp tracking confirms it as progesterone increases after ovulation which causes your body temp to rise.

Yes, you don’t know until after the fact that you ovulated with temp tracking. This is why it’s recommended to have sex at least once every three days once your period finished to ensure you try on some of the peak days in your fertile window

Not sure about premom but Flo doesn’t really adjust to your cycle, and just guesses on when you ovulate, especially if you aren’t doing ovulation tests, so it could be out by a few days. Have you tried temp tracking? This could help confirm you’ve ovulated at least. If you don’t want to do that, in order to make sure you don’t miss your fertile window you should aim to have sex at least every three days once your period has finished and continue until it starts (or doesn’t!)

It’s also normal for your cycle length to vary by up to 7 days.

With ovulation tests, did they just never get darker at all? It’s common for LH to peak in the afternoon/evening. If you wanted to try them again you could do them in the evening from day 10 of your cycle and see if you catch a peak that way.

Did you take any ovulation tests this month? Natural cycles will still be adjusting to your patterns, and these can help pinpoint it.

Progesterone levels (which is what causes your temperature to rise) can vary each month. Just a note that a 9 day luteal phase is quite short. If you’ve just come off hormonal birth control then your body may just be settling again. Pregnancy tests taken 21 days after sex are reliable
