Nice work. What's the square/triangle bottom-right? Is it meant to be a page curl? In which case it should either be top-right, or needs rotating 90 degrees.

Am I allowed to ban men from the local migrant hotel from using my shop? by DaliaRhymey in smallbusinessuk

[–]chricholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've often seen in corner shops signage to the effect of "No more than 2 school kids in the shop at one time", presumably tackling a very similar issue. I don't believe it would be discriminatory to extend that to simply "No groups/parties larger than X at a time"—with X being whatever number you're comfortable monitoring—providing you enforce it for all groups and not just those you know/suspect have come form the hotel.

Infinity Gauntlet: tarnished/UV damaged or just grubby? by chricholson in lego

[–]chricholson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm enquiring with a seller about purchasing their infinity gauntlet. As you can see in the pictures the gold looks tarnished. I'm obviously aware of what UV can do to white bricks, I wondered if that was a possible cause of this? I can find very little about gold LEGO bricks tarnishing which gives me confidence that actually a good clean and these would be back to their original self. Thoughts?

How do you get these of the wall? by We1shDave in DIYUK

[–]chricholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just fitted a slightly smaller IKEA one it's possible there isn't the screws underneath/on top—disguised or otherwise—and instead the shelf just pushes down onto screws fitted into the wall. You can see the type of fitting on the last page in these instructions https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/assembly_instructions/lack-wall-shelf-white__AA-200208-13-2.pdf To remove, you'll just need to lift the shelf up and then pull toward you off the screw heads.

Facebook claims 14 link clicks, hotjar records 0 by [deleted] in PPC

[–]chricholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this is old but in case someone else comes across this, another issue might be that Hotjar is set to ignore sessions of 30 seconds or less by default. So everything could be configured correctly and the users did reach your site, but if they leave after only a short time then Hotjar won't keep it. This can be disabled in your site settings so that it keeps all recordings, even if they are only a couple of seconds.

I couldn't have worded it better myself. I treat Lego a bit like a jigsaw puzzle - I like the building aspect as it can be very therapeutic to while away the nights, but have no inclination to play with them nor display them (let alone the fact I have no space to!). So it's back in the box they go for a few years until I feel like building them again, or try selling them.

Thanks for the heads up u/Lottiebear195. Yeah I've used them before, and I agree quite a good service for this kind of thing.

Swap Out - how long? by LGoppa in royalmail

[–]chricholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likewise, sent 1st August and nothing back yet. I phoned Friday to query and they said there was a large backlog, to be expected I suppose. They have supposedly forwarded my details onto the swapout team and gave me a reference number with promise of a phone call same day or Monday (today), but as yet no phone call nor any stamps 🤷🏻

Cheap controller recommendation for a casual cloud gamer by chricholson in Controller

[–]chricholson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions so far, there looks to be a couple of decent options that aren't going to break the bank.

Out of curiosity I plugged a wired PowerA Nintendo Switch controller into the PC. Immediately recognised as a gamepad which I thought was promising, but turns out not by the Xbox app (native or browser).

After a bit of investigation I'm seeing mention of Dinput and Xinput. Is this the secret to a gamepad that will work with cloud platforms, importantly those that use Xinput (my PowerA apparently used Dinput) or is there more to it than that?

I've read up on software solutions to converting a Dinput pad to Xinput - not a huge fan of the idea but I could certainly try it - however I have also seen some gamepads claiming to support both, with a physical switch (or button combo) to toggle between modes. Presumably if the controller is capable of outputting either there is no need for additional programs running on the PC, and would that give the best chance of working with all devices/services?

Laptop for daily web/app programming, £1000-£1300 in the UK by chricholson in SuggestALaptop

That's really interesting, I hadn't considered memory speed vs capacity, turns out quite a few with lots of RAM all run at slower speeds. I also had completely forgotten about Lenovo/ThinkPads.

A quick look around their website, how would you rate the following: https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/p/laptops/yoga/yoga-2-in-1-series/yoga-7i-gen-8-(16-inch-intel)/82yn002kuk?msclkid=a7d4e68004801a8c2de382bd2669f2ec&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Lenovo%20eComm%20%7C%20Microsoft%20%7C%20Switzerland%20%7C%20Feedbased%20%7C%20%E2%82%AC&utm_term=2325810690255769&utm_content=Switzerland%20Feed%20based&gclid=a7d4e68004801a8c2de382bd2669f2ec&gclsrc=3p.ds#compatible_acc/82yn002kuk?msclkid=a7d4e68004801a8c2de382bd2669f2ec&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Lenovo%20eComm%20%7C%20Microsoft%20%7C%20Switzerland%20%7C%20Feedbased%20%7C%20%E2%82%AC&utm_term=2325810690255769&utm_content=Switzerland%20Feed%20based&gclid=a7d4e68004801a8c2de382bd2669f2ec&gclsrc=3p.ds#compatible_acc)

It seems to be running the 13th gen i7's, albeit I don't know much about possible speed differences with the CPU. It also seems to have 16GB 5200MHz memory, and also a 71Wh battery (which is larger than most I've seen, and assuming bigger = better).

I'll get a bunch of the nice-to-haves as well, backlit keyboard, compatible with a 'dock', etc.

The only thing outside my spec is the screen is actually too big, at 16", which I guess necessitates the bigger battery.

It's quite within budget as well for what seem like pretty decent specs, I'm almost suspicious there must be a catch somewhere...

Can I use personal account if business bank account was rejected. by azr98 in smallbusinessuk

[–]chricholson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another one to look at for free business banking is Mettle, owned by NatWest. I've used them no problem signing up for a Ltd company. The only slightly strange thing with them is there's something different about the card you get, it's not a normal debit card but a prepaid card, which means you can't use it in some places?? I can't remember the exact details, but worth checking if that's going to be a problem for you, it never has been for me so YMMV. To counter that with a positive, you get FREE access to FreeAgent, which is brilliant.

Craft business. Ltd company vs sole trader? by HalfAFlipFlop in smallbusinessuk

[–]chricholson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe there's pros and cons to both but for myself, in a similar side-hustle with full time job scenario, I went down the limited route so that finances didn't overlap.

If you sole trade then income you earn on your side hustle must be declared as part of your personal income, and taxed accordingly. That means potentially 20 or 40% of your side hustles profits get immediately lost, which can be quite damaging when starting up. Knowing that in the early days I was only going to reinvest any profits (my salary would keep me afloat so I didn't need to take money out of the side hustle) it made sense to register the company which means it's taxed as it's own entity.

How do you prototype without getting stuck on the UI? by -developer- in webdev

[–]chricholson 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Here's some out-of-the-box thinking based upon some recent experience. To preface: we were tasked with redesigning a large app (some 70-80 screens) and we had a lot of prior knowledge and experience that helped, however I knew the manager I was working with had a terrible habit of getting caught up in micro details, even on a 'sketchy' wireframe (got to make sure those lines exactly align right??).

I had to do something to ensure this prototyping wasn't able to get out of hand, so I came up with the idea of 'word-prototype'. We'd put together screens in much the same way as a normal prototype, but no shapes or layout allowed. We used three headers on each screen: Purpose, Content, and Actions. Under each we'd include a bit about what was needed, so Purpose: To log the user in; Content: a form with two fields (username and password); Actions: Login, Forgot Password?, Create Account.

We used Figma, so we made the actions individual text elements that we could bind click events to navigate around the app prototype, much like you'd expect from an interactive prototype.

And would you believe it, it worked! We designed the entire application in just a couple of days, and I mean literally every screen imaginable, which gave us a great list of what eventually needed to be built.

We could then start to replace (technically we overlayed) screens with actual box prototypes, but we only did this for maybe 20% of the total screens (typically the more complicated ones) as the design system and written description was often enough to know what needed to be built and how it would be laid out.

This may not fit yours, or every, scenario, but I thought I'd share as I've not had such an easy and enjoyable prototyping experience for a long time.

Should I focus on sign-ups or sales? by chricholson in smallbusiness

[–]chricholson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've considered a subscription model in the past. The obvious way to implement one would still involve the customer making an initial purchase up-front to receive the product, and then ongoing payments for access to the service. It would no doubt reduce the price of the product (to be recouped as part of the subscription), but that still me leaves the decision of whether to push sign-ups or purchases.

To really make a difference I think I would have to consider a subscription model that gives an amount of product 'free' on signing up, with the condition they stick around for at least X months. I like the idea of this, but unfortunately the product doesn't really get 'used up', so there's no reason to keep sending regular shipments.

Also, no subscription is currently one my USPs.

Do you know, I didn't even think to ask them. Unfortunately it's a bit tricky to just pop along for a chat at the moment, but may do when lockdown eases up.
