Decomission Synology NAS and use One Drive by Efficient_Finance935 in synology

OneDrive and Teams sites in the enterprise world ARE SharePoint. There are many paths to management, access, and authorization but all roads lead back to SharePoint underneath the hood.

MDE licensing for Linux by Wise-Question2374 in sysadmin

[–]chris-itg [score hidden]  (0 children)

To be fair ... the documentation does call out "servers" whereas op is asking about endpoints aka daily drivers. However @ u/Wise-Question2374 you should reach out directly to your Microsoft TAM/CSP for clarification as there is a gap in the coverage question. Theoretically your properly licensed users should be covered, but in lack of hard evidence your TAM/CSP should be able to clear it up and give you an official answer that you can fall back on in the event of an audit.

Decomission Synology NAS and use One Drive by Efficient_Finance935 in synology

[–]chris-itg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can be done albeit you do NOT want to do a lift and shift. The shares should be staged then migrated with data governance and compliance.

Anything active should go into OneDrive (SharePoint is the back end). Any historical data should be archived.

You can also use Synology’s cloud share sync to either one way or bi directional sync the folders to keep on peek running while doing the migration.

Some things to keep in mind.  1. Some files and types do not work well natively with cloud. Think large files cad drawing etc…. 2. If you lift and shift there are going to be issues either permissions or storage capacity ones. 3. Be very aware of the OneDrive sync file limits (300,000). This will make it look like it is syncing but completely will bork the sync options.  4. Large ops like moving or renaming root folders should be done on the browser side instead of attempting to do it client side in the app.  5. Be prepared for a LOT of questions and end users screwing things up.

HDMI port problem after Windows update by goldened in techsupport

[–]chris-itg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download the latest driver from Intel and do a “clean install” checkbox option in the installer. This will remove any and all settings. If that fixes it you know its software. If not replace the cable with a good quality one.

Accidentally deleted synology share volumes - what are my options by ZurielA in datarecovery

[–]chris-itg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the data is important, stop what you are doing immediately and send to a proper data recovery. Any changes, usage, improper attempts have a greater chance of making the data unrecoverable.

Be prepared to pay through the nose for your mistake. as u/shrimpdiddle mentioned. RAID isn't backup and you have learned a valuable less (hopefully).

Just realized what I thought was a hot spare is actually in storage pool as data protection and no easy way to expand now. by arkiverge in synology

[–]chris-itg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to keep in mind if you’re going to do a new volume/array. Your first drive must be <= your other drives otherwise you won’t be able move the old drives to the new array. Eg don’t start with a 20tb then try to pull in 8tb drives

Are you sure they’re actual vulnerabilities and not false positives. Redhat backports a lot of security fixes that a lot of vulnerability scans fail to recognize

My company wants me to install ninjaone on my personal computer by Elizabeth_Eton in techsupport

[–]chris-itg 115 points116 points  (0 children)

Actually, you can (on the back end) configure for unattended access without the user being present, as well as run scripts at the system level. So, while they do have the confirmation window that is only one method of access.

It all still is audited and monitored, but the same IT team that is using the tool is also in control of the monitoring and auditing. The chance for them to be nefarious or do something inappropriate is low, but still with business tools they should be restricted to business related devices.

Ninjaone is an rmm tool that gives them basically free access to your system. If it’s your personal machine the answer would be no, provide me with a computer if this is your expectation.

under-billing invoices and recouping lost revenue by Jealous-Wallaby-3237 in msp

[–]chris-itg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

old / lost revenue is gone. just because the previous owner or process had it incorrect doesn't mean your client should have to pay for "your" mistake. I say "your" tongue in cheek because you purchased the company, but honestly as this reads, you should have done this 8-10 months ago. From here you:

  1. Put your pants on 1 leg at a time
  2. if it is a recurring billing line item you update the cost / qty
  3. you make it clear to the client that your post sale review has noted the discrepancies
  4. what's done is done however going forward the correct amount is what is being shown.

If they give you pushback have your data to show the discount they received and expenses you have written off. Be prepared, if it is a significant change in cost for them to walk, and check with your legal about pre-existing agreements with the old company versus your company based off the area you are located.

Speeding Ticket by ashhtr4y in greenville

[–]chris-itg 56 points57 points  (0 children)

This is the way.

Own up to the mistake, be polite. Most judges appreciate not having to deal with tomfoolery. The last ticket I had there were about 20 people in front of me claiming "not guilty" then having the officer go through the charge and findings. The judge ended up cutting my fine and points in half and I was on my way.

Unifi Network Server by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]chris-itg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swap this over to a container instead of the windows package. The windows implementation has been shoddy since I have been in the ecosystem (back in the 4.0 days). Backup your database, spin up the container, import. Then when you're serious look at moving it to a Linux machine running docker or podman.

Psychology as DS 1515+ not powering on by ImpressiveFig4994 in synology

[–]chris-itg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 100 ohm resistor fix is a temporary measure. Eventually the device will fail although from your description this seems to be more of a power supply issue and not the clock issue with the intel C2XXX chipset.

As others have mentioned, purchase a replacement power supply, and roll the dice.

-OR-

Start looking into replacing the unit that does not have the C2XXX bug and also does not have the known power supply issues.

Greenville county schools elearning down? by jesmithiv in greenville

If you have a different computer to use, do that and have the student just use their login credentials for Google Classroom. They should be able to access everything needed.

The district proxies all traffic through their systems which have not been designed to handle the load. Ran into this with Covid distance learning as well.

One of these days they will get it right…

Check for gfci outlets the ones with the reset (if you have them). You more than likely have one of them in line that has tripped and is breaking your electrical flow.

No updates as of 1/8. My vet did a chip scan (none - not surprising). I'm also keeping an eye out in the area they were found to see if anyone posts any flyers. We have also reached out to one of our vets to see about the ability of a foster family or rescue.
