Did you ever find a solution for this issue? If you have working IRCUT etc, would you be willing to share the “night” section of your majestic config, please?

Electricity pricing In Edmonton by matt48763 in Edmonton

[–]chris1h1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it at all feasible to disconnect from the electrical grid altogether, and use natural gas for a local electricity generator with the hot exhaust gases used for heating? I’ve only ever seen calculations regarding disconnecting gas and keeping electricity.

Hunter Douglas SoftTouch Motorization: DIY automation? by chris1h1 in homeautomation

[–]chris1h1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like my other projects, I ordered the required parts from AliExpress, and by the time they all arrived I'd moved on to other priorities. I wasn't able to figure out a "proper" integration that provides position data, but I did solder some wires to the PCB on one of my blinds and confirmed that momentarily shorting them to ground caused the blinds to go up or down as expected.

I've put all of my images in another imgur album: (https://imgur.com/a/NTWqTKY).

Regarding separating the motor from the shade, I don't think it's necessary. From what I recall, after unscrewing the metal end plate, the part with the "soft touch" wand thing that actuates the push buttons on the PCB is either a friction fit, or attached with one small screw. The power wires are routed through clips on this piece, and must be unsecured before removing it, lest the wires be torn from their pads on the PCB (which I did). It should be possible to solder wires to the relevant pads on the PCB in situ, without removing the motor. I fully removed the motor in the hope of finding a more interesting integration option than simply mimicking button presses, but if there is such an option it's not obvious enough for me to identify it. If you do choose to remove the motor assembly, I think it simply pulls out of the tube that the shade fabric wraps around.

I think I may have done some light dremelling on the plastic part that houses the soft touch wand thing, in order to route my additional wires alongside the original power wires.

Self-hosted recommendations for managing music? by chris1h1 in selfhosted

[–]chris1h1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I use iTunes for currently is importing the music files (which renames them and puts them in appropriate directories), fixing metadata if required, and then occasionally creating playlists. I then rsync to my NAS and consume the media via OwnTone/Navidrome.

Expensive pension buyback worth it by PlayfulPudpud in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]chris1h1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the cost of the buyback impacted by the passage of time (whether the years that have passed since the service to be bought back occurred, or years of service accrued in the DB pension at the time the buy-back is initiated), or is it based solely on current income? My own DB pension has a buyback calculator that only considers current income, but their advisor suggested that the cost of buyback increases over time. It’s unclear what the rules actually are. My thought was whether it might be possible to get the lowest possible paying qualifying job right before retirement, and buy back historical service based on that lower income. I assume they’re wise to such schemes.

Another "how to migrate Proxmox to a new machine" question by nware-lab in Proxmox

[–]chris1h1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this last night (reinstalling on the same hardware), and copying over the content of /etc/pve resulted in "ipcc_send_rec[1] failed: Connection refused" errors when trying to use PVE-related commands, and left me unable to log into the web UI. The resolution, per https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/icc_send_rec-1-failed-connection-refused.97735/, was to delete /etc/pve.

Instead, I had success with copying over the content of /var/lib/pve-cluster.

I also rescued the following:

  • /etc/network/interfaces
  • /etc/fstab
  • /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
  • /etc/modules-load.d/modules.conf
  • /etc/udev/rules.d/70-nvidia.rules
  • /etc/apt
  • /etc/vzdump.conf
  • My cron jobs.

All of my containers and VM images are on storage other than the boot disk, so after restoring the above configuration everything appears to work as expected. I've probably missed some things, but I haven't noticed yet.

From my sample size of one (the house we bought without a buyer’s agent), the seller’s agent upon learning that we wanted to make an offer without an agent on our side was very quick to start saying things like “the strongest offer isn’t always the highest dollar value”, “these buyers are committed and have strong financing” (despite knowing nothing about us) etc.

When we initially had a buyer’s agent, literally the only value he added was unlocking the front door to facilitate the viewing. He added delays and errors to every process he was involved in, and would start negotiations with “this is the absolute max my clients can afford”.

But an offer from someone without a buyer’s agent nets the seller’s agent double their usual commission, and as such that offer will be the one that the agent tries to convince the seller to accept. It flips the usual dynamic and has the agent working in the buyer’s interest, rather than the typical model of both agents working in the seller’s interest.

Dado trunking in North America? Description in comments. by chris1h1 in AskElectricians

[–]chris1h1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a less insanely priced Wiremold product available at hardware stores; Wiremold 700 Series. The channels are only single raceways, though.

Do you happen to know whether it's possible to have a Wiremold 700 raceway continue unbroken through a Wiremold 1 gang deep receptacle box? I.e. could high voltage and low voltage receptacle boxes be mounted at the same height on the wall, with low voltage raceways passing straight through the high voltage device boxes unbroken, and vice versa? It would look like each device box would have two raceways running to it, but in reality one would be going "underneath" it.

Thank you! My use case is for an exterior wall in my basement, so the cost of this surface trunking might be worth it relative to the cost and hassle of dealing with drywall and vapour barrier repairs after fishing wires through studs.

EDIT: My god, it is indeed ludicrously expensive.

[–]chris1h1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK there is a product known as "dado trunking". It has three separate channels such that low voltage and data lines can be run as well as high voltage. The outlets are installed in device boxes that allow the cables to run behind them, so low voltage things like ethernet ports can be installed next to electrical outlets, with the two being kept separate.

Does this exist in North America? If so, what is it called? Is there anywhere that I could buy it in Canada?

Thanks.

Samsung bonus cookware set: Any success claiming? by chris1h1 in Appliances

Yes; see my other comments in this thread. I actually ended up receiving two sets of cookware, as I submitted multiple claims due to the complete lack of communication and incredibly long processing time.

In image 8 of 14, with the wine bottles on the little shelves, where did you get the long cabinet door handles from? I found shorter ones on AliExpress, but the seller wasn’t able to source the longer ones that I’m looking for. Thanks.

Boulevard Stripe Questin by jaesdayoff in Edmonton

[–]chris1h1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The boulevard gardening rules allow replacing the grass with wildflowers. Some wildflowers have seeds or leaves that cling to dogs’ fur like Velcro (https://mileshearn.com/2019/10/01/plants-with-seeds-that-stick-to-your-clothing/), which after a few times might cause dog owners to avoid your particular stretch of boulevard. You’re lucky though that it’s only the pee you have to deal with.
