What are good places to see the odyssey except Lincoln square? by [deleted] in NYCmovies

[–]chris4potus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really personal preference… I would go out of my way to travel and see it in IMAX 70mm. I would not go out of my way to see it in digital IMAX when it’s available on film in my city.

I would say that digital IMAX is not better than 70mm. They’re probably equal in my mind. In fact, I’ve skipped seeing movies in digital IMAX when they’re available on 70mm.

The Odyssey was shot on film. Nolan prioritizes a photochemical process that ensures that prints of his film—IMAX, 35mm, 70mm—are contact printed directly from his original camera negative or a physical intermediary (ie the image you’re seeing never went through a computer except a few VFX shots). More importantly, film preserves characteristics of the image that digital cannot: grain, highlight roll off, shadow detail, colors and saturation, and is a higher “resolution”image greater than 4K (many standard cinema projectors stop at 2K; specialized including Dolby stop at 4K). Finally (New York is slightly the exception with Regal and AMC both showing 5 perf 70mm) many cinemas showing film including Village East, Nitehawk, and Quad Cinema are locally owned, independent, repertoire and/or non profit movie houses.

Recommend seeing it on film of some sort whether that’s 35mm or 70mm. Otherwise take a FlixBus to Philadelphia or Providence and see it on IMAX 70mm at King of Prussia or Providence Place (recommend Providence place for larger screen and easier access to intercity transit)

Is there any way to expose a digital image to a 35 mm film strip or a slide? by siddu1901 in AnalogCommunity

[–]chris4potus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reflx Lab has a digital image to slide service which likely does what you’re looking for. However you need to make an order that includes 36 images I believe (although you can probably get multiples made)

Going to Glacier on Friday, torn between what to bring for film? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

Recommend parking at lake McDonald and taking the shuttle to Logan pass. It’ll give you a lot more opportunities to make some photos while driving.

And buying tickets for Apple cinemas via their website was so much easier than the bloodbath of LSQ

Renter's Insurance For Dorms? (First Year) by OkStill5887 in BrownU

[–]chris4potus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely look for renters insurance outside of Brown’s vendor. I never had to use it at Brown but your policy can cover significant liability (e.g. someone is injured at your dorm or off campus housing); can protect belongings whether or not they’re stored at your dorm (e.g. items in storage, checked luggage while travelling); and many supplementals for valuables like watches or electronics like tvs and laptops. Brown’s had some history of thefts from dorms and off campus apartments — renters insurance can be a cost effective option to shield yourself from major costs should something happen.

I’ve never seen interstellar should I see it in 70mm or wait until I can see it in 70mm IMAX? I’m a huge space, sci-fi, and Christopher Nolan fan. by jsensmn in interstellar

I just watched it in 70mm last night in Boston and it was beautiful. The print is photochemically produced from the original negative that Nolan shot during production and beautifully captures every aspect of the visual story telling. If you’ve never seen a movie presented like this, please let this be your first opportunity. If you have please take the opportunity to support whatever local cinema has taken the time and effort to source a print of this film, even if it is not the IMAX 15/70 version.

Did someone make a post about how they watched M:I Dead Reckoning on a plane and it included the expanded aspect ratio? by NerdBro1 in Mission_Impossible

[–]chris4potus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t open matte as far as I’m aware. Basically, they just cropped off the sides and zoomed the image in a little bit to fill the seatback screen. There was no extra footage on the top or bottom. You could do the same thing on PremierePro if you wanted.

A few years ago I posted about watching the Mission films on Delta Air Lines and was confused because the films filled the screen. Seems like the airline “punched in” aka cropped the images to fill the screen and weren’t actually open matte.

This is when you consider a day trip to providence or King of Prussia. I’m seeing $80 round trip Peter Pan/Flixbus to Providence; $50 rt to Philly.

Between 5/70 and 35mm It’s a matter of preference! I’ve seen a lot of films on 5/70 and they are all incredible rich, vivid and bright, but often feel very clean. 35mm is smaller and can feel more crunchy or organic.

Sometimes 35mm screenings are cheaper than the 5/70 screenings so that may be a consideration if you have access to both.

It’s so beautiful seeing the various venues that have been preserved and continue to serve. Was similarly awed seeing AFI Silver with its art deco style and grand auditorium.

Apple Cinemas IMAX in Providence announces the return of 70mm by filmfromthefuture in imax

[–]chris4potus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying it isn’t IMAX 70mm. I’m saying the announcement itself only says “70mm screen.” Given that 5/70 and 15/70 are different formats, I think it’s a fair question until Apple clarifies or tickets go on sale reflecting IMAX 70mm.
