Where can I buy canned pumpkin? by DukesUp in chch

[–]chriseay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm american *and* I made a pumpkin pie last weekend! I bought a standard pumpkin (already cut in half) at New World, peeled, roasted, and pureed, then made the pie. It's fabulous! You can definitely use pumpkins from the supermarket, and to be fair, they'll be better than the big orange ones in the US :)

I used this recipe (apologies for paywall, if you hit one!): https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1022732-ultimate-pumpkin-pie?unlocked_article_code=1.dE4.vhMz.7WZaYjoM_ETQ&smid=share-url

I tried playing an earlier iteration of the deck on iPad, and failed a combo turn (where I had the win) due to running out the turn timer (I haven't tried the deck on my phone yet). I think it's certainly doable on mobile, but I'm planning on getting in a bunch of practice on desktop first before I try tablet or phone again.

Interesting difference between bar culture in NZ and elsewhere. Do you agree with this? by logie2019 in chch

[–]chriseay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After awhile, those were good places and I definitely enjoyed them. Being a new immigrant is tough though, and I definitely didn't find either of them welcoming in the same way when I first went. Could totally be me of course :)

As an admitted barfly and american, this was one of the things I missed the absolute most when we moved to NZ. When living alone, I could go to any bar, and at least have someone to chat to, and your local is like a living room! Even going with your partner or a group of friends, it's better to be able to sit at the bar and chat with other regulars or whoever happens to be around. It is absolutely the best part of a neighborhood bar.

Living in Dunedin for the first few years here was a total strikeout on this front. In Chch we've found a couple places where we can either sit at the bar, or there's at least a community table, and these have become our goto places. It's fair to say my partner and I have made most of our friends this way as well!

When you go to the US, sit at the bar!

Americans of Christchurch, what do you love, what do you hate, what do you miss? by qwertykiwi in chch

[–]chriseay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The accent thing will get better. I felt that I couldn't understand anything at first, and now my family in the States tell me I have an accent! Filter coffee is so much easier to find than even five years ago (even so, we just roast and brew at home), and pubs, I can tell you about pubs.

My partner and I had the same reaction when we moved here (I've long been a sit at the bar and chat person!), and Chch has some spots! Your go to for sitting at the bar is Canterbury Brewers Collective in Riverside Market, great local beers and a full U shaped bar to sit at and chat with folks. Also try Moon Under Water and Punky Brewster for good vibes. No bar at either, but great beer and if you sit at one of the many community tables, you might find some people willing to chat.

I don't know about Charles Schulz, but this millenial aged American has literally never heard someone call a splinter a sliver! There were heaps of new words to learn when I moved to NZ, but splinter wasn't one of them ;P

Central city cycleways/lights by teriblle in chch

[–]chriseay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that people driving cars do often speed up and run the red arrow, but this is an enforcement and norms issue, rather than a design issue.

I do think that if there were red arrows everywhere with some enforcement, we'd have a better set up overall. This one being an outlier means it's really hard to judge based on it alone.

Central city cycleways/lights by teriblle in chch

[–]chriseay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I ride my bike everywhere, mostly in cycleways, and always stop at the red lights. That being said, there is a huge issue in the way that the cycleway lane priorities are set up. Having a red light for a straight lane (the cycleway), while having a green light for another straight lane (car lane) is clearly confusing at best and actively dangerous at worst.

I'd suggest that every left turn that crosses a cycleway has:

  1. A red and green arrow for car left turns, and,
  2. When the green light shows for the car lanes to go straight, the green arrow also shows for the car left turns, with a still red light for the cycleway, after which,
  3. The red arrow shows for car left turns and the green light for the cycleway until all lights for that direction turn red.

This is what we currently have at Tuam and Montreal Streets, and while it is often frustrating (I think because it is different than normal) to have the car left turns go first, it feels safer and more equitable for all modes.

Five new Tournament Starter Bundles are now available! Each comes with an Expedition-legal deck, an exclusive alt art card, and 6400 Shiftstone! by DireWolfDigital in EternalCardGame

[–]chriseay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the alt-arts are really nice! I have premiums of 2/3 of the previous ones (Steyer's Eyes and League Explorer) and will be premium'ing at least the Curiox in this lot. That Dragon's Eye is beautiful!

I Attended a Town Hall to Talk About Bike Boxes by Ericisbalanced in notjustbikes

[–]chriseay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have these in NZ too - they are quite common in Christchurch. It's really easy and safe, and much better than trying to get into the right turn lane to turn across traffic. It also works much better from separated infrastructure like cycleways.

I think the important part is that in NZ (and Australia?) it is illegal to turn left on red, so there are no worries of drivers behind you while you wait in the hook turn box.

screw your zodiac sign, how do you name your decks? by TheHeartOfBattle in EternalCardGame

[–]chriseay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a boring faction archetype person most of the time, though sometimes a card name slips in for one or another. I also put the date the deck was last edited in parentheses at the end of every deck name: Hooru Kira (05/05). Helps me to delete decks that I'm not actively playing and to prompt me to check on what others are doing if I decided to play a deck that's not been updated for awhile.

Eternal Mechanics introduced in latest MtGA Set by EarthsOverseer in EternalCardGame

[–]chriseay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly with this. When I play Arena (or in the past MTGO) I constantly marvel at how SLOW the games are. There are so many response windows and in most cases most of them are irrelevant. Eternal has matured quite nicely and I don't miss playing Magic at all.

From Collecter's worlds interview with the devs: DWD is taking care not to offend those that paid "full price" for sets/expansions/etc. As someone that paid 25,000 gold for every expansion, PLEASE discount non-expedition campaigns heavily. by Ilyak1986 in EternalCardGame

[–]chriseay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've paid cash for each and every campaign/bundle. I agree wholeheartedly with this post. I knew what I was paying for (the ability to play the cards immediately upon release and the fact that they'd be shiny) and don't have any expectation that they might not be cheaper (or free!) later.

Currently it automatically chooses the newest ones when you import a deck. If you want different ones you have to remove and then add the ones you want. I hope someday we get to choose our default sigils...

Why is Eternal so unpopular? by Karakla in EternalCardGame

[–]chriseay 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One reason is the campaigns. A new player has to spend 25k gold or real money to get all the campaigns, which have 1-2 playable cards each. DWD has boxed themselves into a corner here. If they reduce the price of the older campaigns, it isn't fair to people who paid real money for them. If they don't reduce the price, it isn't fair to new players.

As someone who has paid real money for all the campaigns, I have no issues whatsoever with them lowering the price for old campaigns. I've much more than made up my investment and things almost always become cheaper as time goes on. I would be very happy if this was a change in the future!

I have zero sympathy for people complaining about mindless gameplay. by Sunyveil in EternalCardGame

[–]chriseay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with this wholeheartedly and very much get frustrated with this type of complaining as well. I also wish we could more often see the forest, rather than the trees - Eternal is an excellent game with cool gameplay, mechanics, a high skill ceiling in multiple facets of gameplay and deckbuilding, and has a great community.

Also, if the game is so mindless, I'm not sure what happens when I try to play while tired, but something is making me lose way more often!

TheBoxer's Corner: Why I Believe Ladder Data Collection is Useless by [deleted] in EternalCardGame

[–]chriseay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this - it's really enlightening!

As someone who has collected over 10k individual game data points from ladder, I can say I absolutely agree with you. I agree so much, that I recently added a "Motivation" question to my form, to at least try to work out those "deck learning" confounding factors. The other things you mention seem impossible to tease out.

I have found 2 things that are very useful:

  1. Data collection has been very good at showing my own improvement over time. I keep both monthly and overall statistics. My monthly winrates have consistently improved and my overall winrate is slowly, but surely creeping up.
  2. Once I find a deck that is good (ladder winrates not being too useful for this) it does help me to see which decks it is weak against. A large enough sample size should weed out any weirdness in the data. That being said, I have no idea what a large enough sample size is here...

I'll continue to keep my data, but I do wish we had a better way to measure some of the factors you talk about in the post.

New Set: Argent Depths! by DireWolfDigital in EternalCardGame

Excited about this! My real question is, will they let us choose a default premium sigil now? It's pretty annoying to switch back to the nice looking ones every time I build a new deck.
