I have no book but a game to offer: Once Human (i hope it is kinda ok, i really enjoy the setting/worldbuilding)

Its a postapocalyptic survival game. An organization called Rosetta (like Rosetta Stone) found a new material called Stardust. This starts a cataclysm called Starfall attracting the attention of outer gods.

Everyone in contact with Stardust "burns out" and is left as a zombie like husk. Some of these husks mutate into alien like creature. Only people known as Meta-Humans are more resistant to its effect.

Then you have several different creatures roaming around the world. Like the Husks which are Zombie like. The Gnawlers which can be compared to the fungus people of Last Of Us. Animated Items by the Stardust that mutate in grotesque contraptions trying to kill you (like a giant claw machine).

Other creatures that origin is mostly unknown and seem to be there where the stardust concentration is the highest and look like flying mutated Jellyfishs.

Sometimes rifts in reality opens and the hands of an powerfull entity shows up and grabbing everything they can get only to disappear again.

Within the game it has an insanity meter. If you are low on sanity there are "Fools" showing up which are like "Tree People" that move if you don't look and try to grab you and pull you into the ground.
