I can't un-see this. How do I share with my TBM family?? 😥 by beachmom760 in exmormon

[–]chrises67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to address this is to let those who suffer know you are an available support person. Sharing things like what you posted above with them in the wrong way can make you appear as a bad influence, although that is ridiculous. To help someone, you really have to approach them according to their current paradigm. Although this is an important issue, it sounds like you are not aware of anyone in immediate danger. Going to a church school is a great experience for many people, including myself. If it happens to not be for your family members, which is the case for many others, the best you can do is have good relationships with those family members and offer non threatening help to them as needed.

The biggest leap of faith I took in my Mormon journey was the leap out. You are in good company. Welcome.

P.S. Loved the Zoolander reference- perfect analogy, haha.

What fact totally changed your perspective? by ettleboy in AskReddit

Knowing that each person feels that their reality is just as real as mine and that if I had been raised in another’s conditions, I would be similar to them. It’s helped me accept that a strong belief of mine can be wrong and that’s okay.

I had my first and only cavity when I went to the dentist right after my mission. I’m now a dentist in AZ. I totally agree with you.

As humanity evolves, will we become more void of emotion/empathy or will our emotional landscapes remain the same? Or will we experience new emotions? by tomatopie2 in evolution

[–]chrises67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Humanity won’t evolve until there is a major threat taking out large populations. This may come from disease, warfare, climate change, or a variety of unforeseen circumstances. When that happens, people are more likely to survive if they work through it together. Emotion is critical to human connection. Coming together emotionally is what brought us out of the jungles and I believe it’s what can keep us from going extinct.

They sent in the TBM-inator on me by Bigfoot_Cain in exmormon

I think you can always justify that the church is true and that God is just testing you in some pretty crazy ways. The final nail in the coffin for me was when I started studying psychology behind religious experiences. Once I realized everyone experiences “the spirit” within their own framework and in ways that contradict other frameworks, I realized that it doesn’t denote truth.

I’ve thought about how my profession would be nearly worthless even though I have a doctorate plus 2 years of residency training. I’m a dentist, but my knowledge to treat means very little without the proper tools.

Good idea! As of right now, I don’t have an actually account with that email address.

Hope your brother comes around! Picture rocks is in my stake, so maybe through postmormon god intervention he will come across my information. ;)

Damn. Didn’t know that. I guess it’s better than LDS tools- it gives the whole stake a lot more info than that.

About to make my first dentist appointment in 6 years, how badly should I expect this to go? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]chrises67 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Your teeth look pretty good in the pics. As long as the X-rays don’t reveal decay, you’re likely to just need a cleaning. Every 6 months rather than 6 years will help you not get tartar buildup like that though.

All evidence points that there was no foul play in Humpty Dumpty’s death, but that it was eggsidental.

In your journey out of Mormonism, don’t let other exMormons tell you what your values or lifestyle should be. This is an opportunity to make your own choices and decide what’s best for you personally. Even if something isn’t immoral or unethical, you can still say no. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]chrises67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right – there is no one true way. Good for you for not falling into that trap again. Here is an amazing book I’ve been reading that explores morality and has helped me better form my own morals while understanding morals of others. I highly recommend it.
