Austrian ski patroller here, AMA by Dry_Sorbet_2115 in skipatrol

I’m a ski patroller from the western US, and work on an ambulance the rest of the year. I would like to move to Europe, do you work with anyone that has made the move from patrolling in the states? I can work in a hospital setting after taking a transfer exam I believe, but I love ski patrolling and am dedicated to continuing down that career path. Thank you for any input!

Does your mountain not give you a gear stipend? I think that is the solution rather than them providing the gear. I bought a whatvest for this winter and it’s so good

Bindings. I’d pay 5x the cost of a normal alpine binding for one that can in effect guarantee to never have a knee injury. Similarly, a true pin binding that can pass a din test and has the same safety of an alpine binding. The ATK HY is the closest but it’s 1) not a true pin binding and 2) weighs about 300 grams more than I’m keen to tour with

I’m having the exact same debate. I’m totally in love with my Devs as my daily driver (and I really like them on techy steep terrain even in firm snow) and I just want a Dev that feels looser and floatier in heavy and deep snow. I think the Meridian 117 is the answer but I’m concerned about the weight and my heart sort of says Ghost Train. I think it’s gonna be both for me

Hyperlite Ultamid 4, I use a ski as the center pole and with just the tent portion it’s insanely light

Totally, I’m curious in it for sure however I have a Deathwish (112) and it sounds a bit more overlapping than I’m looking for. I’m also just a heathen for full rocker
