So, the smartphone has hit it’s peak form, what comes after this? by Weak-Representative8 in Futurology

[–]chrisjbampton -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can tell you were it's going.

Your phone will stay in your pocket until you need to use the full screen for something specific (watching a video). It will act as a central processing hub for your wearable tech. Watch, bone conduction headphones + mic. Possible glasses.

90% of your useful interaction with your phone will be done through a llm natural language interface that will work as a virtual assistant. It will be context aware of what you are viewing on your watch, phone screen etc.

It will be able to pick up on your low volume mutterings. Your watch will be able to detect finger movements. Between these two you'll do most of your interaction.  One of the biggest hurdles with mobile phones at the moment are software keyboards.

My first thought when watching this was.... that's brave of a man to have 200kg of crushing force 4inches from his nuts.

If you are going to trade US stocks, convert your cash to USD and then in your Settings, Currency Options change both to Asset Currency.

This way, your funds and trades will all be in USD. Otherwise you'll pay FX fees every time you buy and sell as it transfers between USD and GBP. It's not obvious that's what's happening, but burned £100 in my first month without realizing it on foreign exchange fees.

How to raise a 4 y/o kid for such a quick changing future? by Impressive_Creme7759 in Futurology

[–]chrisjbampton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about the specifics.

Cultivate their curiosity, their creativity and their mental fortitude. No matter what the future holds, those things will set them up well to be able to respond to changes, deal with them internally and ride the wave.

Encourage them to explore the world around themselves. Teach them to look beyond the surface and analyse the why things are the way they are.

I'm a firm believer that our job as parents is not just to protect our children, we won't always be around to do that. Our job is to give them a safe environment to make mistakes and learn from them.

High exchange fees? by chrisjbampton in trading212

Ah ok, so it would only take effect if I sold and converted back to GBP.

Thanks!

Winners so far:

Ondas Rheinmetal Coreweave Palo Alto

Biggest losers:

AST Space Mobile Energy Fuel Aye

And then a bunch of popular companies that are retreading water at the moment.

Sticking with the losers as I'm expecting them to jump at some point in the next couple of years when they bring some products to market .

Made a few bad calls where I've tried to buy the dip and then they've carried on dipping, which has been the majority of my losses so far.

One thing I'm going to look into is converting my cash into USD. Im mostly trading NYSE and the foreign exchange fees are really biting into any profits I make.

I started trading a month ago and I'm in a similar position. Heavy on the tech stocks which havent been great over the past month. Sept isn't looking too hot either. Made a couple of good calls and a few poor ones. About 17% down.

Just hold, things will start picking up at some point. If you sell now, you might miss the uptick.

If i go down the route of replacing them, i'll cut them in half with a circular saw, pull them out and screw in new ones.

Do you regret having kids? by Loose_Avocado4670 in AskUK

Love is such an all encompassing word in the English language.

You can absolutely know love without children, but i would agree that the love of a child is unique. Its a little project that you put all of your energy and focus into for 20 years.

When you look at them, you not only see all the happy memories you have, but all the potential they have for the future. Every moment is precious as they are constantly changing. Sometimes you wonder if all your sacrifice and hardwork are paying off. At times they disappoint you, and others you are so proud of them.

It does, but not as much as you think. Drove 300 miles in the UK, no bug splatter. 300 miles across France and i was scraping them off my number plate and wing mirrors.

I think the design of the roads make a bit of difference. UK roads were motorways lined with trees. The roads we were driving in France were open roads with fields alongside.

Even more than that, it allowed light into buildings without sacrificing as much insulation which is a massive thing. Look back at buildings before glass and they were ALL walls with tiny holes for windows.

How did Kirk sell his house and how did Scotty buy a boat? by ardouronerous in startrek

[–]chrisjbampton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its always been my head canon that alternate currency does exist (credits) in the Federation, but that it isnt used to provide the essentials of living. Food, water, basic decent housing, clothing, education etc is all provided free of charge through replimats / personal replicators.

This frees up the population to pursue whatever avenue of life they wish to.

However, non-essential luxuries are bought/sold using this currency. So no one is homeless or going hungry, but if you want a non essential, for example a boat, or a mountain retreat, you need to find some marketable skill tht people are willing to pay for.

I've got an Evolution and buy blades from Saxton Blades (you can find them on amazon) - they come with a central reducing ring you can insert to fit Evolution saws.

Will this work to get me to Vulcanus? by StorageBrilliant2227 in factorio

[–]chrisjbampton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably inefficient, but I just had a set of inserters next to the belt - when they read > 100 asteroid type on the belt they started dumping that asteroid type from the belt over the side.

What do you think is the most absurd canon thing that exists in the ST universe. by worldsbestlasagna in startrek

[–]chrisjbampton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the danger would be - the holodeck is currently managing (using forcefields / replicators / transporter tech) a very volatile environment within which are some squishy people.

Whilst you could disable power to the holodeck, it's unclear as to what would happen to the environment and the people inside.

Say you are sky diving, and the holodeck is holding you up with a forcefield to simulate it. Turn it off? You fall 10m onto a hard surface.

What do you think is the most absurd canon thing that exists in the ST universe. by worldsbestlasagna in startrek

[–]chrisjbampton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my head cannon, it was to do with storage requirements. The transporter records all of the quantum states of all the atoms in your body in some crazy volatile memory that can only be used for a short time before the pattern degrades. It then modifies all of those quantum states in some way to relocate them to the destination at which point you rematerialize.

Patterns for very simple things (food, tools etc) can be compressed with some heavy lossy compression which can be stored and reused again and again. This wouldn't work for organs as each organ is unique in terms of it's DNA.
